View Full Version : So-called "tribute" picture to Chuck Jones

That one picture that Jerry Beck has on his site of a drawing by a cartoonist, that has the WB cartoon characters pushing Chuck Jones' coffin off a cliff - am I the only one who finds that picture tasteless? I know it was referencing the RR&C cartoons, but still I think that was a pretty bad and disturbing "tribute" to him, by showing his coffin being thrown off a cliff.

Darn tootin' it's mega-tasteless!! It crosses the line from 'black-humor' over into 'sick-humor'. It still will cause a laugh, but then a shudder that anybody would draw such a thing... and a paper publish it!! Chuck deserved all the tributes, not such a thing showing him literally being thrown away!

Yes, I'll have to agree, that editorial was cruel. The others were pretty good though, especially the "Acme Halo and Wings" delivery. I believe that same cartoonist (of the "halo and wings" strip) did a few Road Runner/Wile E. Coyote spoofs years ago, including one with two nurses slowly pushing old timers RR&C, one with Wile E. fooled into running into an elevator, with a bunch of doctors with their pagers "beeping", and another with a frustrated Wile E. trying to leave a message on the Road Runner's phone, but has to wait after the millions of "beeps".
There was also a funny "Mother Goose and Grimm" strip a few years ago with Wile E. getting 1,000 bottles of acne cream instead of a set of Acme Rocket-Powered Jets... :p

Yeah, that was rather tasteless. Though he did at least only include characters Jones had either created or handled.
I was actually going to scan the Acme Halo and Wings one in and post it here, my local newspaper has this thing called the "Cartoon Sampler" which publishes cartoons from other newspapers, so I saw it before Jerry Beck commented about it on his site. I thought it was a cute tribute.

I thought it was in terrible taste, even for The Hartford Courant (hey, I work for the Courant's competition. I have to hate everything they do :D ). Nothing sweet, or even funny, about it. The pictures from the other newspapers, those were great. Sweet and poignant. I especially liked the Michelangelo-themed one.
But the one from the Courant.....ugh. Awful, just awful.

Yep, was from the Courant. I don't know why the guy thought that would be sweet, or even funny. And, yeah, I'm a reporter for the Courant's competition. You?

Yes, I found that cartoon in very poor taste as well-
But somehow, the first thing that popped into my mind was how that was probably drawn by somebody who really had NO IDEA of exactly what Chuck was all about, except that all they know is he created the Road Runner cartoons....
You might sit in a room with them and say, "What's your favourite Jones cartoon?"
The response might be: "Oh, I like those ones where Bugs Bunny and The Grinch are constantly trying to catch this really fast and blabby little mouse who is escaping from the Tazmanian Devil while riding the Road Runner, until they team up with a singing frog."

That image was a very creul and distrubing editorial cartoon drawn by someone named Bob Englehart. So, therefore, Bob made the ONLY bitter tribute to Chuck Jones, too.
Here in Cleveland, a editorial cartoonist, Jeff Darcy (who, actually, is a real fan of Jones' cartoons) made this tribute cartoon to Chuck Jones,

Now THIS is a tribute cartoon to Chuck Jones!

Yeah, I saw that one, Pietro, actually, all of the other tributes besides Bob's were nice.

My favorite: Nick Anderson's "Suspended Animation," found among the other tributes in Duncanzits's link.

I like Randy Bish's cartoon myself. :D But Nick Anderson is the political cartoonist for the Courier-Journal in Louisville, Kentucky where I live. I am glad he is not my competition when it comes to high school editorial cartoons or I would never win state!
