CW looking to spin off "Gossip Girl"

NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) – The CW wants to spin off its hit teen drama "Gossip Girl" next season.

CW entertainment president Dawn Ostroff said the network is in discussions with the show's producers as to how a new show could be done. But she said nothing has been finalized and there's no imminent announcement.

"Nothing really tangible yet, but we're talking about it," Ostroff told the Hollywood Reporter after her speech at the WWD Style + Media conference in Manhattan.

"If it's the right idea, we'd all embrace it and be enthusiastic," Ostroff added. "But nobody more than (executive producers) Josh (Schwartz) and Stephanie (Savage) want to make sure there's the right idea that they can wrap their arms around and really be excited about."

"Gossip Girl" is averaging 3.5 million viewers so far this season -- its second -- up from 2.7 million at the same point last year. The show, which revolves around privileged teens in Manhattan, stars Blake Lively, Leighton Meester and Penn Badgley.

If this comes to pass, the PTC will need to come up with a new ad slogan. If Gossip Girl is "mind-blowingly innapropriate", what will the spin off be?

Not anytime soon. The only other new prospect I've heard about is a remake of "Melrose Place" to match the remake of "90210."

I hear they're just calling it "Place" this time.
