Live Action 'Cat In The Hat' Coming Summer 2003

Alright. I could barely tolerate The Grinch, but do we really need this, too?

Entertainment Weekly talked to producer Brian Grazer ("How the Grinch Stole Christmas") about the big-screen live-action upcoming Dr. Seuss adaptation.

"The blend of his irreverence works very well with the Seussian child sensibilities," says Grazer, adding that Seuss' widow, Audrey Geisel, approves of Myers' casting. "Having Mike puts the story on steroids."

No director has been named for the film, which Grazer hopes to begin shooting this fall for release in summer 2003. Replacing Tim Allen, Myers will undergo prosthetic transformations from makeup guru Rick Baker.

But unlike Jim Carrey's "The Grinch," the "Cat" isn't kids' stuff. "I think of him like Bluto, the character [John] Belushi played in 'Animal House,'" Grazer says.

"He took the characters on a ride more intense than anyone expected, and that's what the Cat does."

I think if Dr Seuss knew his relatives would treat his work this way, he would have written his will differently.

Dr. Suesse will be spinning in his grave a thousand fold. I just don't see his characters working in live action form. They just seem to work best in animation in my opinion.

I always thought it was silly to market a massively-budgeted blockbuster based on the animated adaptation of a book that was written to criticize the overcommercialization of Christmas. But for what it was, I enjoyed The Grinch, simply because Ron Howard and Jim Carrey are very talented and a great deal of work went into the production.

This project, however, borders on sacrilege.

Cat in the Hat movie? I think my head is spinning faster than Dr. Suess in his grave. What can hollywood be thinking? Personally, I don't even like the cartoon adaptations of Dr. Seuss's books, the Grinch movie was not something I enjoyed, and the cat in the hat seems ridiculous. What's next? Green Eggs and Ham? Maybe Horton Hears a Who? Better still, One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish Blue Fish. I'm sure that soon these will all be live action films before long. Why not? They made Scooby Doo live action. Apparently these people simply hold nothing sacred.

Well, the Scooby Doo live action movie would have been better if Kevin Smith been given the project to do with it what he would! I loved his live action Scooby sequence in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.

I never watched The Wubbulous World of Dr. Seuss, but I think I remember reading something about how it wasn't completely faithful to Dr. Seuss's work. For example, there would be Muppetty jokes like "Call me a cab," "OK, you're a cab," instead of the clever poetry which Seuss used to parallel larger social issues. For example, did you guys know Yertle the Turtle was a parody of Hitler?

I think this is a horrible idea. For every good live action adaption (which I dont think there has been) there are 6 or 7 really bad ones (Rocky & Bullwinkle, The Flintsontes, for example...) and I think this one is going to join the "bad" pile. There's no good way this can be adapted to live action...I can't see it...

This is just another case of "wait and see". The film just might end up good...though it probably won't be a patch on the animated special that aired some time ago. The main thing I remember about it was that the Cat was voiced by Allan Sherman ("Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah"). Does anyone else remember it?

And for the last goll-durn time, leave Rocky and Bullwinkle alone!

this movie sounds like.....well, crap. I remember saying, after seeing how they "treated" "The Grinch", they weren't gonna let them do anymore.....I forget who said that..

but for gosh sakes..leave it alone....I'd rather have a High-Quality CG Cat in the Hat than a Live-Action one..

I suppose carey's playing the Cat too? lol

I would agree that Rocky and Bullwinkle wasn't half bad. I could have survived just renting it instead of buying the DVD, but I did not regret watching it. Now the Flintstones sequel, in Rock Vegas. Yeah, there is 90 minutes of my life I won't get back.

I suppose we should count our blessings. Before Mike Myers came along (and before The Grinch was made), this project was being developed as a Tim Allen vehicle.
