View Full Version : CN Prime Time in 2009

CN is giving up the 10PM hour to Adult Swim starting in January leaving them with only 3 hours post 7PM to play with. How do you expect CN will use them?
The latest blocks have started at 8PM rather than 7PM though they could always move earlier in the wake of AS taking 10PM away.
They seem to be going with "theme nights" for Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday and that will likely continue in some manner the question is how will CN use their prime time with one hour less time than it had before?
Chances are not much will change but I thought we could kick around a few ideas anyway.
Wednesday is "The Flicks II", it seems.

Well they share the same companies and adultswim might give Cartoon Network ideas. But to answers your question, Cartoon Network might give us a new block with action shows, Monday-Wednesday i hope. Who knows might play these kids wb shows( Spectacular spiderman, Yugioh )or maybe they will just air movies. Not hoping for movies though.

Mondays - Wednesdays
They would be the same as they currently are, with some older shows airing between 6 and 8. The 9pm hour would likely be a TV-PG show, or one of their other action/comedy shows.
Thursday-Friday
The blocks both move up to 7pm. Simple as that.
Saturday
Action Flicks will move up to 8pm. Possibly 7pm if Naruto actually happens to still get good ratings despite being preempted every other week.
Sunday
Stays the same.

I think it is cheddar, Well since The Flicks is getting the ratings wednesday might be another flicks night. Let's just hope that does not happen and we will probably get a new action block that has anime this time.:)

Yes I suppose it is becoming that way. Kind of bothersome... I mean having shows in PT for only 3 nights in the same spot isn't as good as 4 or 5 but only 2 nights? Well if they do that they may as well not even air the same shows 7-10PM on any night. Makes it a bit more like a network.
I've been thinking... Tuesday night would be a nice night to have more action cartoons.
07:00 PM - Batman Encore
07:30 PM - Clone Wars Encore
08:00 PM - Naruto (new)
08:30 PM - Naruto (new)
09:00 PM - One Piece (new)
09:30 PM - KIBA (new)
Monday could be comedy oriented to balance that.
So...
Monday - Comedy Focus
Tuesday - Aciton Focus
Wednesday - Movie (action or comedy)
Thursday - Comedy Focus
Friday - Action Focus
Saturday - Action Movie
Sunday - Comedy Movie
Monday and Thurday at 7PM-8PM would be Chowder and Flapjack
Tuesday and Friday at 7PM would be Batman and Clone Wars or Alien Force and Saturdays
Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday would start movies at 7PM and have filler shows after them.

Thanks, Mugen. :)
In that case, my ideas:
Mondays:
7-8PM Johnny Test
8-9PM Flapjack
9-10PM Chowder
Tuesdays:
7-8PM Johnny Test
8PM Batman: BATB
8:30PM Ben 10: AF
9PM The Secret Saturdays
9:30PM Star Wars: The Clone Wars
Wednesdays:
7-8PM Johnny Test
8-10PM Movie
Thursdays:
7-8PM Johnny Test
8PM Chowder
8:30PM Flapjack
9PM Foster's (the final episodes)
9:30PM Total Drama Island
Fridays: Same as now
Saturdays:
7-8PM Naruto (NEW)
8-10PM Action Flicks
Sundays:
7-9PM The Flicks
9PM TSS
9:30PM Star Wars: TCW
"The Clone Wars" and "TDI" would be good lead-ins for "King of the Hill" on AS, to give them more viewers.

I don't want to think about what happens when [as] gets 10 pm. I wish we could go back to the days when [as] was a late night weekend BLOCK and not its own channel.
Everything will probably remain the same as it is, only on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, it will go straight to [as] after the respective blocks end. Heck, that could even mean there won't be any new Naruto every other week on Saturdays.

I'm pretty glad AS takes up half the channel. Realistically, CN would just program night-time slots with Johnny Test and TDI reruns.

Maybe, maybe not. Disney programs their night space with old shows that no longer air in waking hours.

I'm sure if Cartoon Network is still working with now defunct(kidswb) They could let Cartoon Network air the spectacular spiderman and Yugioh 5ds. But i am not sure if yugioh 5ds would bring the ratings.
Yugioh would seem more fitting for Saturday mornings rather than late nights.

I would only want to see Cartoon Network get late nights back if they were going to use that time to show something worth watching, like uncensored Looney Tunes and MGM shorts or Toon Heads.
As for CN's losing the 10pm-11pm time slot, I can't say that it's a huge loss, as CN wasn't doing much with that hour besides encores of The Secret Saturdays and Clone Wars on Fridays and reruns of their already repeated shows the rest of the week.

4Kids owns Spectacular Spider Man, as Tednut already pointed out.
TMNT aired as part of the Miguzi lineup for a time, but it's rating were poor, so it was dropped.
Static Shock is a dead franchise and there's no reason for CN to bring it back.
Shaman King and Megaman: NT Warrior were already tried on CN briefly, and their ratings were terrible. Again, there's no incentive on CN's part to run those shows again.

Also, Static was too 'niche'; it was never a monster hit, only a moderate hit. Plus, SS belonged to an earlier tradition that CN doesn't seem to be in a hurry to go back to. I could maybe, repeat, maybe see Static Shock turn up on Boomerang one day, but not back on CN.

Unless it stays exclusive to CW4kids in 2009 (and it probably wont), CN is a vaiable option. It's owned by Sony and Marvel and Sony has had good relations with CN... Marvel not so much but they did get the DTVs and Fantastic Four: WGH but that didn't do so well so I'd imagine CN and Marvel aren't on the best of terms hence why Wolverine and the X-Men and Iron Man went to Nicktoons of all places. Still Sony might make it happen if they feel CN is the best choice for the series.

CN has been treating it as its own little channel. AS has to be on everyday, however other blocks are preempted for marathons.

AS is no longer a part of CN. Williams Street controls Adult Swim completely, meaning CN can't "treat" it in any way or preempt it: it's controlled by completely different management.
So yeah, it's a separate channel for all intents and purposes.

It's a card game show that looks and acts nothing like one, which was sort of the point the producers and director wanted to make. The fact they got an A-list studio in Japan (Madhouse, who handled Death Note and both Black Lagoon seasons among others) to animate it kind of shows how different it is from typical card game shows.
Seriously, episode 1 has a freakin' ambulance hijacking and a subsequent car crash in it. How long has it been since anything Toonami-related had that?

7:30 Camp Lazlo
8:00 Chowder
8:30 The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack
9:00 Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends
9:30 The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy
This would be kind of like a CN Originals Block of Comedy.
Tuesday:
7:00 Ben 10
7:30 Transformers: Animated
8:00 Ben 10: Alien Force
8:30 The Secret Saturdays
9:00 Megas XLR
9:30 Samurai Jack
This would be kind of like a CN Originals Block of Action.
The Megas and Jack airings set a great transition to [adult swim] since those shows had a good adult fanbase.
Wednesday:
7:00 I Am Weasel
7:30 Cow and Chicken
8:00 The Powerpuff Girls
8:30 Dexter's Laboratory
9:00 Johnny Bravo
9:30 Evil Con Carne
Because Cartoon Network has forgotten about classics, why not Wednesday be a night of CN Original Classics?
So, it would be:
Sunday: Flicks
Monday: CN Original Comedy (Monday Night Comedy)
Tuesday: CN Original Action (Explosion Tuesday)
Wednesday: CN Original Classics (Wednesday's Flashback)
Thursday: Har Har Tharsdays
Friday: You Are Here
Saturday: Action Flicks
The reason why most of my ideas consist of originals is because Cartoon Network's schedule's majority of shows are all non-originals! With anime, Teletoon productions and co-productions, it seems that Cartoon Network has forgotten about the rest of their originals.

CN can't do anything with the time frame or pre-empt AS ever BUT WS still falls under the Cartoon Network brand and Adult Swim like Nick at Nite is not another channel it's a long form block that airs daily and is only seperated from the main network for ratings purposes.
That doesn't really explain why Turner's website lists AS as a separate network, with no mention of CN.
Andrew T. Hingson
11-27-2008, 02:47 PM
I poked around Turner's website and found a list of properties and brands which AS was under seperate from CN. Yes it's a seperate brand but it like Boomerang are part of The Cartoon Network fold but unlike Boomerang it's not a seperate network.
http://www.adultswim.com/gen/legal/trademark.html
All original properties are listed under Cartoon Network or TCN.
AS is still a glorified block. It exists just as NAN does, as part of the channel that is seperated for ratings purposes but still part of the channel.

Not really. Williams Street is technically a branch of Cartoon Network. It operates somewhat separately from Cartoon Network, but it's a division of Cartoon Network and Cartoon Network owns it.

I wouldn't say there's no input. Space Ghost C2C was a Cartoon Network show before it went to [as], and it was produced by Williams Street even before [as] was born. Also, after all of the Williams Street originals, the original Cartoon Network logo is shown in the credits. And I heard somewhere that Samurai Jack was going to air on [as] based on a poll, but it went to Toonami in it's final days instead. Which means that Williams Street does collaborate with the rest of the company that makes it up, since both Toonami and [as] are/were programmed by Williams Street.

C2C could only be considered a CN show mainly because it premiered well before WS had the idea of Adult Swim. There's a reason why the DVDs are sold on the AS store instead of the CN one. The reason why the CN logo is at the end of all WS shows is because CN is the parent company, just like how the Nick logo is at the end of Nicktoons Network originals. And for the most part, Toonami was run like AS: WS had free reign, with little input from CN. Somewhere along the line, CN was allowed to have more control and I guess SJ was just a little request by the WS crew that the CN execs okayed.

True, but the fact that Cartoon Network has little input on its Williams Street branch is because a lot of the material from both sides wouldn't work appropriately on each network. None of Adult Swim's stuff would even see the light of day on Cartoon Network, and even though a lot of Cartoon Network shows contain brief adult humor or innuendo, none of their original shows have it anywhere near the extent that would make it fit in on Adult Swim, except for maybe Samurai Jack, which did have intense enough action to possibly warrant a slot of Adult Swim. If Cartoon Network aimed their demographic higher or if Adult Swim toned down their adult material, having more input from each side could happen, but it's relatively impossible to do so when the two have such different demographics.
That wouldn't explain the Toonami thing.

Man they can't play Naruto Shippudden at 7:30AM... way too violent for that even edited to PG-V.

Man they can't play Naruto Shippudden at 7:30AM... way too violent for that even edited to PG-V.Agreed. For it to air during Saturday mornings, it would have to air in the 9am hour. And the same Pokemon movie every week, back-to-back? Pass.

Well, there's only two so far.
Ben 10: Alien Force
Pokemon: Giratina and the Sky Warrior
Unless it stays exclusive to CW4kids in 2009 (and it probably wont), CN is a vaiable option. It's owned by Sony and Marvel and Sony has had good relations with CN... Marvel not so much but they did get the DTVs and Fantastic Four: WGH but that didn't do so well so I'd imagine CN and Marvel aren't on the best of terms hence why Wolverine and the X-Men and Iron Man went to Nicktoons of all places. Still Sony might make it happen if they feel CN is the best choice for the series.
It went to them because Marvel and Nick consider it a Nicktoon.
