Well known and beloved to many, the original Transformer series was first hit the US airwaves back in the 1980s and has since been making a retro comeback with a new animated series and several guide books. Now Rhino has announced that they will be releasing a Transformers Box Set (VHS / DVD) of season one on 4/23!
The new boxes will contain 16 episodes and the DVD version comes with a bonus disc packed with extras like animation tests, slates, outtakes, and the original Japanese opening!
Let's celebrate!!!

Not exactly the newest of news to me, but I'm still excited.
And just to clear up any misconception, the Japanese Transformers openings weren't exactly "original" as the show was first animated for a US audience, not a Japanese one. The box set certainly contains these Japanese openings (as well as the Japanese bumpers), but these were created to replace the "ORIGINAL" US openings & bumpers.

Most of the toys were taken from Takara's old lines. The show itself is American; Takara just made a different opening for the series in Japan.

Amazon.com lists a more detailed description of the extras. One thing they mentioned was bumpers. What are bumpers?

yeah, this is sort of old news, but I am of course excited as everyone else.

The bumpers are when the anouncer says something like "Now back to Transformers." and we see, for example, Optimus turning into a truck.

Optimus and Grimlock. Grimlock was the first TF I ever owned - he was powerful, mighty, arrogant and strong - everything I, well, wasn't - somehow that appealled to me as a roll model..
Unlike Bumblebee which, for some unaccountable reason... I despised ;)
Shockwave was hard to get over in the UK - he was on everyones hitlist!

I had a red bumblebee toy...so it wasn't really him....
I liked the DinoBots...which is why I wonder how ppl could feel it wasn't right for Transformers to turn into Animals come Beast Wars...
I really ought to try to get that Box Set...I've almost completely forgoton G1...

The Dinobots were giant machines, not tiny organic life forms. Grimlock and BW Megatron were both T-Rex's, but if you saw when they were in the Ark just how tiny Megatron was compared to those guys. Grimlock was the same size if not bigger than Prime. It's not the same thing. It's organic vs. machine. The Dinobots were true robots.
My favs
Starscream
Megatron
Devastator
Bruticus
Menasor
Galvatron
Most of the toys stunk and didn't look like they did on the show. Did anyone have Iron Hide or Ratchet? What's up with the windshield over the face? Galvatron looked nothing like he did on the show. If you like Galvatron and have a little bit of money, I suggest you get the Japanese Botcon Exclusive Galvatron. It's robot mode only and packed with detail.

Well, techinically it wasn't organic vs. machine. The "skin" of the Beast Wars characters wasn't real organic flesh - it was a synthetic material. But I understand what you're getting at - the old school G1 animal Transformers looked like machines in the shape of animals, where as the BW animal Transformers actually looked like animals.

That's because those toys were actually originally from another toy line. A lot of the first few waves of the G1 toys were - they were recycled from other failed or forgotten shows.

Like the rest of you I am really looking forward to the DVD release, altho it will have to wait until I get some more money as the Batman disks are first on my list.
I remember getting the entire constructicons set and a Autobots sets that formed into another giant robot - don't remember what they were called but it was an ambulance, a police car, a police chopper and two other ones I can't seem to remember. Anybody remember this set by chance?

Those were the Protectobots, and they formed Defensor. Hot Spot was the firetruck and the body. Swerve was the police motercycle. I can't remember the other names they were a medic helicoptor, a police cruiser, and an ambulance.
All the gestalts could be formed with parts of eachother except Constructicons/Devestator and Predicons/Prediking. Arms could be legs and vice versa too.
EDIT: Hmmm, looking back at my post I'm starting to thing Swerve may be wrong. Anyone got a better memory than me?

Okay here's the correct list:
Firetruck/body: Hot Spot
Motercycle/left leg: Groove
Helicopter/left arm: Blades
Ambulance/right arm: First Aid
Police car/right leg: Streetwise
Here's where I got the info:

What were the transformers called where the heads transform into tiny people that could ride inside the vehicle of transformation?
