Have you ever been to Japan? I have found this test resut from speedtest.net:
Japanese Internet vs. North American Internet (pic) (http://www.topnewsblog.info/tblog_11080.htm)
Is that true?

I'm not sure but I have a suspicion that South Koreans might have even faster internet access.

Japan is like several European countries VERY fast with its internet connection, and I heard some rumor about them making a terrabyte per sec line
Here in Sweden I only have 100mb, but from what I know most Americans don't? When I was in Japan (and I don't recommend it. horrible place) I had about the same speed as I have here with wifi

I've been Japan, and the internet there was definitely more reliable than what I have here in the United States--and I was in a rural part of Japan. Those numbers I don't know though, I've never run a speed test over there.

I speak regularly to a friend attending Keio University, and while her internet does appear to be faster than mine, it also appears to be a lot less reliable. She has regular 4-5 hour outages.
You question it? Everything is better in Japan. ;)

I don't know about the rest of you, but a page like that, that has a link to a book being hawked, makes me more than a little skeptical about how accurate the info on that page is.

Japan is very xenophobic, so of course I've never went there before.

I remember in the past being told that many Japanese websites are built with this high speed national standard in mind. Which of course means they can be less friendly for systems outside of Japan.

I didn't use much internet when I was in Japan in the summer of '07 but the internet I used in the hotel lobby was pretty damn fast.

I thought you loved Japan?

Actually, I do like some of the stuff that come from that country, but not the xenophobic attitude of its populace.

The thing about Japan having faster internet is true, however, they pay more for it.

Not all of Japan is xenophobic you know.

Actually, from what I've heard they have internet speeds four times as fast as the US for 1/4 the price.

Tokyo and Kyoto were fairly friendly to me when I went there.

Japan wants me to go so they can kill me.

The problem with the USA is that because of the large number of rural areas and the sprawled out nature of many cities, it's not like Japan or South Korea, where the high population density makes it economically practical to foot the exorbitant bill of setting up the "last mile" connection to the residence or business for broadband access.
It would require more radical technologies to get broadband access out to less populated areas in the USA, primarily the use of WiMAX wireless line-of-sight transmission.

It's the not rural/urban divide. Even in the most densely populated cities and areas like the Bos/Wash area, internet rarely tops 10MB. I believe government in Japan and S. Korea has made heavy heavy investment in the internet where as our government has largely left the private sector to its own devices.

You also have to keep in mind that the U.S. is much, much larger and spread out physically than either Japan or South Korea. Japan is about the size of Montana; South Korea is about the size of Indiana. Also, neither country has the geographical extremes that the U.S. has to deal with.
Those factors alone would make it much more difficult to set up and bulid an Internet infrastructure here than it would there. (Or any other nationwide infrastructure, for that matter.)
The U.S. is really doing a pretty good job overall buliding its Internet infrastructure, all things considered.
