Mr.Shinchiro Watanabe, fan of music as a whole.
From Blues, Bebop, and Jazz to Hip-Hop then Funk and other Big Beat music.

Do you think without the music Bebop, Champloo and now Michiko wouldn't be the same show they are? And of course FLCL is another prime example with "Rock" being a core basis for the series or really the "Soul" of the piece.

But when it comes down to it, does music TRULY make the show?

And random fanboyness, do you own OSTs?

Well, I don't think BECK would have been nearly as good without any music in it. That just wouldn't make sense :D

But seriously, I don't think that music is the de facto piece when it comes to anime but it is important. I think that the best way to say it is that the music in an anime will determine itself and not the people.

When its an OP in which case it has to be good or else no one will have great expectations of the show when it begins. My dad for example when it comes to anime openings hates upbeat pop or anything but adores instrumentals and dark music. It's just an example of how it can affect its audience. (it's why I am fearful of most anime that involve Ali project in some way) :p

I think that music is always a very important and needed part of anime, one example being the end of Code Geass R2. That song carried the entire emotion of the scene and with out it I don't think the impact would have been as momentous. While I don't think it's absolutely required for every single series, I think it's just as necessary as the dialogue and the action (alright, maybe not AS necessary, but pretty close). Gurren Lagann is another example where some of the musical scores just make certain moments shine brighter than they other wise would. (just look at Spirited Away too)
So yeah, music can seriously make a show. It doesn't HAVE to, but more times than not does it really enhance the pleasure that the audience gets from feeling pumped up or depressed depending upon whats playing in the back ground. There are some shows that just would not be nearly the same with out their music.

BECK..goes without saying. :D
Gurren Lagann is the attempt to put in music into a Shonen Action show and it's done insanely well

Music has been an important factor in any movie since they started being made. TV shows, including anime, are no different. Music sets the mood for the show, which is why people like Master Moron defend keeping the original music in whenever a company dubs an anime. Personally, if there was no music, the show would seem quite a bit more boring.
