View Full Version : TCM airing Oscar-winning cartoons this month

Just a heads-up... there seem to be more classic cartoons being aired in the between-feature One-Reel Wonders spots on Turner Classic Movies than usual, thanks to their 31 Days of Oscar schedule. In the last couple of days, I've happened upon QUIET PLEASE, WALKY TALKY HAWKY, and was lucky enough to have the vcr ready when they aired a letterboxed print of Michael Lah's ONE DROOPY KNIGHT this afternoon (a goal that had eluded me during TCM's previous Oscar-happy March schedules). Since the channel appears to be limiting itself to Oscar-winning cartoons (and probably nominees too) controlled by Turner/Warner, I'm sure they'll all get multiple airings this month; I wonder if they'll play any of the post-1948 Oscar nominated/winning Warner shorts, particularly SPEEDY GONZALES, MEXICALI SHMOES, and THE PIED PIPER OF GUADALUPE, since this isn't CN.
Anyway, a friendly reminder to keep a blank tape ready for TCM's inter-film breaks, for those who don't already do so.

"One Droopy Knight"... letterboxed... and I missed it!? :( I have never, ever seen a Mike Lah Droopy cartoon in it's original format before. I guess I will be checking out Turner Classic Movies a bit more frequently this month.

TCM drives me nuts...they can't just schedule something I wanna see on their one reel wonders as a show, so I have to guess what time a movie ends and what time the next begins so I can tape...but I would like to see some toons on TCM...I'll check the listings and try to catch the breaks.

Hopefully these cartoons will be uncut.

They also NEVER tell you what airs on their One Reel Wonders show. It really would be nice if they did, so we could watch/tape something we have always been looking for!

I think that TCM has the same prints that CN owns, as I have seen edited cartoons on TCM before.

That's the best thing, and when you know when the next program is to begin, tune (or in this case, "toon") in about half an hour beforehand and you should get the one-reeler in.
How about TCM showing "The Little Orphan" uncut for once?!

This afternoon, they showed the Little Orphan. Don't know if it was uncut.

I'm going to try to forget about all of this. There is only a small percentage of the day that I'm both home and awake, so it would be too irritating to look. I can't set timer programs or record 6 hours of the night because I don't know exactly when they come on. I wouldn't have time to look through the tape.

I'd like to see TCM show Der Furher's Face.
They have rights to Disney's library now (they showed Tron letterboxed a few weeks ago) and they also are very anti-censorship.
They aired a Vitaphone short with a blackface minstrel show in prime time once!
Of course, Disney probably has no video master of Der Furher's Face that could be used for broadcast. :(

I believe Disney's official corporate answer regarding this cartoon is "Um....err....what be this 'Furher's....Face?'"
Oddly enough, that's the same answer if you ask about "Song of the South."

The fact that they showed Tron does not mean they have the rights to Disney's library-it simply means they either contracted for the rigts to show Tron or a package of films that includes Tron. They do this type of thing quite often, particularly with AMC.

C'mon, Disney! I've never seen that cartoon before, and if CN is that German one-sided with their wartime cartoons, Disney should at least consider that project...on Toon Disney!

We could be getting closer to seeing Speedy cartoons because last night they showed the RKO short "La Cucaracha", which was of course Mexican themed.

I must be the only one tuning in between movies to see if they show cartoons! If you guys were around at the end of "They Were Expendable" you would have seen a dubbed, but UNCUT copy of "Life With Feathers"!!!
