Don't be a jerk, Alexander. As far as I know, Conroy got the part, but needed to smoke in order to continue to be able to do the voice.

Alexander's posts have been deleted from this thread and warned. As far as I know, he does smoke, although probably more out of habit now than keeping the Bat-voice up. I also heard that Micheal Ironside smokes to make his Darkseid voice work as well. Hopefully we'll see Ironside back in action when (if) JL returns to CN for a second season.

I had a thought reading this thread. Has anybody suggested Ironside would make a fine Bruce Wayne in a Live-Action Batman Beyond? I'd be surprised if it hadn't come up before.

I may be thinking of the wrong guy, but isn't he really old?

Yes. He is old and bald. Sounds like Bruce Wayne in Batman Beyond; doesn't it!

It seems awful, and a bit of a shame, that they smoke, and to help with a part. I mean, sooner or later, the voice that makes the character, is going to fade away due to smoking so much, not to mention their health.

exactly
i wonder how close they can get to doing the voice w/o the cig?
then again maybe they're both smart and only smoke something good like cubans or pipes! =)

That stinks, it's kinda sad that he has to smoke to do the voice.

I thought that Kevin Conroy started to get the voice of BB's Bruce scragglier.
Personally, I don't care either way. As a former smoker, I feel that a person can do whatever they want to their own body. It's their choice.
However, Conroy's not doing BB anymore, so he no longer needs the lower, more grizzled voice.

i have no real problem with smoking, but HAVING to smoke to keep a voice seems a little....extreme

I definitely agree..with all we know about smoking now, I would hate to think that Conroy smoked just to keep his voice gravelly.
Alex (not to be confused with Alexander...I think JH put the two of our names together by mistake)

Michael Ironside voiced Batman in the episode Legends of the Dark Knight, during the Frank Miller 80's segment, but he'd be totally wrong for BB Bruce Wayne. You'd need someone who's more built and fits the overall look better. Someone similar to Jack Palance, for instance.

You'd probably agree with me that Ironside ROCKED in LOTDK.
Jack Palance (although a really fine actor) doesn't have the voice (or the look) to do Wayne. He wheezes too much. Besides; we already know him as Carl Grissom.
Find a recent picture of Ironside. Compare it to the elder Wayne. We already know he has the voice.

Well, I wouldn't cast Jack Palance, I just think an actor with similar qualities could fill the role. And I do think he has the sound. Have we forgotten the commercial where the little Pepsi girl enters the western saloon and yells at everyone with his voice?
Here's a pic of Michael Ironside from Starship Troopers, followed by a pic of Bruce Wayne from Batman Beyond. I don't know if he's the best choice.

Cool. I hope someone tells all the kids tht smoking is the best way to sound like Batman. I'm not kidding. I wish everyone smoked, the world would be a much better, less uptight place. I'm really not kidding.

Well, I know the guy who played Cigarette-Smoking man on the X-Files was an ex-smoker, so for the shoot he would use herbal cigarettes - no nicotine or tar. It's a shame that someone has to become addicted to those nasty things when there are alternatives available.
As for casting, although I think he's a little short for the part, Michael Ironside would make a good older Bruce. He's definately got the gruff, hard as nails act down.

if he got the part before he started smoking, then wouldn't stand to reason he would do find without it? maybe he loves the batman role so much that he is really going all out to fit into character. however, i hate to think that that he smokes to please the fans who got used to the gruffy batman voice.
