View Full Version : So Hawkgirl's wings are part of her body

Hey there everybody!
I was never a part of this debate long ago when it happened. I wasn't even interested in it really.......hehehe.......lol........but while watching War World part 2 I realized that you guys debating whether or not Hawkgirl's wings were part of her body or mechanically attached got your answer.
She tells Green Lantern during the episode that he is leaning too close to her and hurting her by sitting on her wings.
Well, there ya go!
If they were machines attached to her back via a box or something I dont think she would be in pain if someone sat on them.
She must really have wings and those born on her planet must really be bird like people.

That, and in one scene from "In Blackest Night" Part 1 you can see some feathers falling away when she takes off. Actually I think that was the scene that started the whole "are HG's wings organic or not?" debate. I think it'd be cool if this was the only version in which they were.

Mr. Obsession,
I'm with you on that one, for sure. *That* would be excellent! I'd forgotten about the feathers falling away, but now I do recall that having happened. Good catch. :)
I saw a rare clip of Hawkgirl's back (very near her shoulders) in JL Sunday night. Though inconclusive, they sure did look like they were part of her anatomy. (Hey, I vote for a couple of upcoming villains to tug and pull on her wings just to see if they are--and I'd love to see what was left of them (the villains, that is) after they were through pulling--LOL!)

Batman80,
Yeah, I'll vouch for you--you said that from the beginning. Still, I may have to tug on one just to be sure--maybe while she's baking cookies.... ;)

Metaphysician,
Oh, yeah--bigtime. And if she had gotten just one more punch into that glass before she was knocked unconscious by that gas, she would IMO have broken through. :)
I always thought they were real..... Guess I was right :).

Clark,
I'm with you here. But that may be because I'm skeptical in general. :) I'm leaning in the direction of 'they are part of her anatomy,' but I'd still like to read something canonical. This is not to take away from those posters who have asserted that they are organic for some time. But it is possible that her response was furnished with other motivations in mind. I'd rather remain neutral for the present.

You know Karkull, I was really waiting for the Seinfeld line "They're real, and they're spectacular." :p
Not that I believe they're real, but it's still a good line for somone who does

I have to "lean" in Mr. Kent's direction here. And the ONLY reason I'm still having a problem with this is that she tends to NOT use her wings in what I'd consider a "natural" way.
Case in point: when she flies up in front of that planet-destroying cannon on War World, she floats there in that air space WITHOUT maintaining her lift/beating her wings to hover. They just lie against her back WHILE she is floating.
Either the animators are REALLY lazy or those wings just allow her to defy gravity by being implanted into her back.
Can someone clarify this if I've missed something?? Until I get the explanation, I'm leaning on the side of "not real".

Luminous,
I wish I could. I'm starting to think that only two people know whether or not they are real--Hawkgirl and Green Lantern. And the Green Lantern isn't even 100% sure, which is why he got a 'little cozy' with her in "War World." ;)

--real, yet enhanced. A core of cartiliginous growth and nerves on her back (which would feel pressure/pain when touched) but enhanced with implanted feathers to give her plumage. Which makes me wonder if a Thanagerian's wings are an erogenous zone? Again, only G.L.--and maybe Flash--know for sure....

hmmm wouldnt a good explanation for the wings be that they are NOT part of her body inasmuch as they are not natural
instead its kind of a cybernetic thing-- the wings are attached and hooked up to her neural net so she can command them mentally-- unfortunatly they also can feel pain because of this
of course she CAN take them off just like her helmet id imagine

I must be off my form today.
:o
As for her wings: perhaps they're real, but she uses them mainly for gliding. Her actual flight would be owed to the n metal, which holds her aloft and doesn't tire her out (it might be standard issue for police on Thanagar so they can fly for long distances and not overexert themselves).

Karkull,
Am I the only one who believes that the word 'overexert' has been blotted out from every Thanagarian dictionary? ;)

Ok, let me ask you guys something...
When you wear a shirt, and someone touches your shirt, you can feel it, right? And if they tug on your shirt, you might say "Get off of my shirt!" Does this mean that your shirt is part of your body?

Batman80,
*Finally* something conclusive! Hope the popcorn was good. :)

I have to think that they ARE real for two reasons.
1) Obviously the "Ow! Get off my wing!" line. While it's possible that a response like that could be made if the wings are artificial, I don't think that the writers would have put it in the show. Despite the presence of "something in the atmosphere" that can weaken J'onn J'onzz, why write a one line response that would only lead to confusion if the wings were not real?
2) The design of Hawkgirl's costume. Her outfit is practically identical to her Silver Age costume except for the cut of her shirt. While it's possible that a strapless top could support a wing harness-thingy, I think that Bruce Timm may have intentionally re-designed Hawkgirl's top to emphasize the fact the wings are part of her anatomy.
