Anyone else here have a sort of a love-hate relationship with her voice? She was an incredibly nice, kind character, but I think that incarnation was a bit too Mary-Sue, plus the annoying overact-voice that made her sound like she needed an inhaler - ASAP. Part of me dislikes her because of her incessant gasping and wailing, but I liked those cute scenes with her and Ben.

Also liked the part where she yelled at the landlady to "Just pull the cockamamy plug"

If there were more scenes like that, she wouldn't have been near as flat or overly sweet.

How was Alicia Masters a Mary Sue? Mary Sues are annoyingly perfect characters who regularly outshine and outdo the other characters at every turn. Alicia wasn't even a combat character, so how does she qualify as a Mary Sue?

She's not a 'combat' character but more of a telepath/empath, and was able to charm people. That's a characteristic of many Mary Sues, and there are different types, from extremely weak to strong. Mostly though, it was just her overacting that would get on my nerves.

There's no such thing as a weak Mary Sue. Mary Sues don't have weaknesses. That's the problem with them. Mary Sues have more power in their pinky fingers than everyone else in the cast combined and they can pwn anyone and everyone on the show without breaking a sweat. If they had weaknesses, they wouldn't be Mary Sues in the 1st place. And since when does Alicia have powers, unless you meant that metaphorically?

I can understand if you don't care for the character, but calling Alicia a Mary Sue makes about as much sense as accusing her of being "emo". When did Alicia ever show up the Fantastic Four and make the entire team look like useless chumps (which is a common habit of Mary Sues)?

Not all Mary Sues are like that. There are different types, including the angsty beautiful boy or beautiful girls who have heartbreaking pasts, weak angels who charm everyone and everyone loves them. There's also the evil Mary Sue that is just a horrible creature with no redeeming value, like the Kaazon from Star Trek: Voyager. I liked them, but mostly they had no room for much development.

And I do in some ways like the 1994 Alicia Masters, but it's sort of a love/hate relationship.

And her level on the Mary Sue litmus test might be low, but she does have some Mary Sue attributes, such as:

-telepathic/empathic abilities
-tragic childhood
-isolated life
-abusive family situation
-controlling father
-psychotic father
-everyone loves her
-talented musically
-the 'beauty' of a 'beauty and the beast' pairing
-appears overly fragile
-calms down the Hulk
-convinces the Silver Surfer that earth is worth saving

There are other characters which have Mary Sue tendencies, but I think these characteristics can be very pronounced in the 1994 incarnation. There are weak Mary Sues, because not every overly perfect character is all-powerful. Even Harry Potter could be considered a Mary Sue in some respects, as can Ayla in the Children of the Earth series.

She's not a Mary Sue for one simple reason.

Mary Sues are fan created characters, not canon characters.

If you could class a Mary Sue as canon characters then at least 90% of all protagonists throughout the history of fiction would fit most of the criteria. Then there are secondary characters, etc.

LOL I kinda liked Wesley way back when, but now he's kinda so-so. I mean, they could've at the very least NOT given him those powers and instead given them all to one of the others - even Barklay for cryin' out loud!

And to me, Alicia was quite nice, but she smacked of canon-sue, a variation of mary-sue. She just seemed too perfect.

I hate these terms. Just seems like something the internet created to pin things that they dont like...Wait a minute..

Well, there are some things I did like about her, like I said, and other things which I didn't. And the Mary Sue term was created in 1972, before Gore invented the internet.
