John Delaney's Sketch of the Week #10

Welcome to "John Delaney's Sketch of the Week"!

Out of the kindness of his art, John Delaney is doing something big for the fans - an exclusive weekly sketch for the fans who frequent Toon Zone!

Every week, he will draw a new picture based on the results of the poll. That means that *we* fans choose what the image will be!

The contest will begin every Monday, and end at 5pm the following Friday, giving fans a solid five days to choose. You can only vote ONCE! John will then draw the sketch over the weekend and we'll present at the beginning of the following week. The characters must be animation/comic characters drawn in the Animated style, and if you have any requests for future polls, send me an email with your ideas! Keep an eye out on the Comics Forum for all the latest action!

I urge everyone to vote Megatron. He's an animation icon. He brings back of all of your favorite childhood memories. If Megatron wins and becomes the latest sketch it will be like being kids again.

Forget all of that and just vote Megatron. I haven't voted yet. I'm afraid he'll be the guy with 5 votes at the end :(

There has never been a cooler fight between two arch-rivals like Megatron vs. Optimus Prime in Transformer's the movie. No one fight has meant more for a series than this. Megatron was able to kill Optimus in the fight. The Autobots were left without a leader and were scattered across space.

While Optimus may have died, he weakened Megatron and he was turned into Galvatron... Sure Batman and the Joker have fought many times, but the stakes were never that high. Two characters, popular characters fighting it out to the death

That's why you have to vote Megatron. He's no animated vixen or Toonami sensation, he's an Icon. People were wanting to see something different in these sketches and that's Megatron folks

I'm torn between the Adam West Batman and Two-Face. So, I'll see which one is in the lead, and I'll vote for either Bats or Two-Face. And if I may ask, what is this "Battusi" that I keep hearing about? What is it?

And does this answer my question about we can keep requesting for characters that have already been drawn, but in diff. costumes?

It would be really interesting if the Adam West Batman wins, since I've always been wondering how he would look like if he was done in Bruce Timm style. But, we could always look at the early Batman comics to see how it would probably look. So, why is it called the Adam West Batman if his costume looks just like the 60's Batman costume? Isn't it supposed to be the 60's Batman? Are the costumes different, because it looks the same to me. Or, if John does the Adam West Batman, will he look not in shape just like he was in the show instead of the muscular 60's Batman? :p

I don't think I've heard of his name before, and I have no idea what he looks like. But if the fans here want him drawn, then I'm sure he must look cool. And with John drawing it, John will probably make the character look even better! :D

Um. Maybe I'm taking your post the wrong way (maybe it was a joke?), but the Jonny Quest I'm talking about wasn't on FoxKids. I'm not talking about the cruddy remake from the 90s, but the original, Hanna-Barbera prod from the 60s, which was definitely better. No Jesse, for one thing, and the awesome designs were, I believe, done by Alex Toth. I haven't seen too many eps (ones I've seen were good), but the designs were the bomb! Ok, no one's used the phrase "the bomb" in about 2 years, but hey... :) Very comic-bookish, with heavy black shadows, etc. Very Cool!

Anyway, Naraht, I think you were either confused, ignorant, or both... At least on the subject of JQ.... :)

Here's hoping for Jonny to make a big comeback....

...and I certainly agree. Sure, there are a lot of nifty characters up on that Poll, but upon entering the double digits, and seeing as how Harv's got the severe shaft in #44 of Gotham Adventures, let's rekindle his legacy...

Besides, after seeing Space Ghost win last week, I think we can all agree that many of the more unusual characters are bound to reappear should they not win. Two-Face is awesome folks!!!!

Big Guy and Rusty, Harv, christ I think I'm going to have an aneurysm! John WHY!!!!! PlEASE You can't do this! I mean I emailed I wanted to see both, but NOT in the SAME POLL!!!!!! tHIS IS HORRIBLE! I'm the biggest proponent of Harvey Dent on the planet I can rant for HOURS on END as to why you NEED to vote for Harv, but Big Guy and Rusty, Big Guy and RUSTY, I can't get enough Big Guy and Rusty, this is going to kill me, Plus I have a computer program Due Friday and I'll never be able to finish it while pondering this. You're trying to kill me! How am I supposed to choose, what are the considerations in a match like this? WHY?

Here's what I want to know:

For Big Guy and Rusty- Would you be drawing the Duo in their standard faire, Robots kicking alien heinie, or would you possible incorperate the Dark Horse, The Pit Crew, Lt. Hunter and Or Possibly Dr. Slate? Or would it be strictly Big Guy and Rusty? The Legion Ex Machina? Would it a Patriotic Pose or an Action freeze Frame, or like Downtime between Rusty with Big Guy shutdown and Rusty doing his whole talking to Big Guy in Shut Down mode with Hunter hiding and listening to the kid? (Can you tell I'm all about Hunter, and while we're at it which Hunter would you Do? Frank Miller Hunter or Tristar Pretty Boy Hunter? Both have their merits)

2, for Two-Face- How would the dastardly DA be portrayed? Tortured Psycho Villian obsessing over coin, fate, destiny? Cold Blooded Killer with no emotion, or Injured Ex-Good Guy in a moment of Clarity, also here, Action Pose? Downtime Pose, Arckham perhaps in a straightjacket? Timm style or Jansen? Cartoon or Comic Book? Ooo, Sale perhaps? Maybe shirk all rules, do a Timm Batman Beyond version ala Miller, but not Bald for cripse sake!!! Aieeeee! ORR even draw him Timm style bringing flowers to Timm Style Montoya! Yes Face and Montoya Forever!

These are major considerations for my vote cause these are damn near my most favorite fictional characters ever, and given how they're going to come across has a lot to do with which one I want to see more. You could say I'm of two minds on the subject. In all likelihood it'll come down to me flipping a coin at 2 til 5 on friday.

This decision does not come lightly and I'm liable to end up dead over it i'll have you know. I hope you're happy. To everyone ELSE who has no such qualmes over their vote I insist you think this over carefully, Why vote mere Mecha when you can have John capture the essence of all intelligent Robots in Big Guy and Rusty, that is the desire to be human, and the pain (no pain receptors!) and price that comes from that? The struggle of Mankind to be GODS! Because that's what Big Guy and Rusty embodies! That and the beautiful necessaty of Propaganda and Corperations, and what with these troubled times of war, isn't it truly apt?
And those thinking Harvey Dent deserves a vote, well truly he does, he is Bruce's true counterpart. He is the fallen hero of Justice, someone who lost themselves in the fight Batman struggles in everyday. A man who's soul is forever etched on his face as a reminder to Bruce of what he might become. He is the tortured essence of Man versus himself, man versus fate and justice.

I requested them and I got them, never expecting them to be in the same poll, now I must rue this decision for all eternity!!!!!!!

Ha! Thanks, you nailed it, Hunter is Bigger than Big Guy That's what's wrong. besides the whole him floating in front as opposed to actually sitting on his shoulder which is what I was going for. I know that particular pic has major issues, but it's the only one with Hunter, Rusty an Big Guy I've got done, except one where Big Guy is holding Rusty Upside down while Hunter Watches, (there's a story folks...). I'm planning on reworking that drawing eventually but I've got computer programs and film festivals to worry about, not to mention my entry for the film fest hasn't been shot yet, small technicality there....

INT. TOONZONE GREEN ROOM - DAY

The Canidates are sitting back watching the Leader Board with baited breath. A Large spread is out on a long table near the door; chips, salsa, mini hotdog weinies....

BRAK: Weinies! Allright!

Buffy eyes Brak cautiously, unsure as to whether she should be decapitating him or not.

BUFFY: What exactly are you anyway?

BRAK: I'm cute.

ADAM WEST: That you are friend, though I think the Young Woman here was alluding to your Species...

BRAK: Wow! Adam West, I though you was dead!

ADAM WEST: Hardly.

BUFFY: Excuse me Mister West, I can take care of myself, I don't need *your* help.

ADAM WEST: Well, no, I never, I mean...

BUFFY: Yeah I know what you *meant* Now Get Lost!

Adam slumps dejectedly and walks over to the couch where Green Lantern is sitting, sulking as usual.

GREEN LANTERN: *mumbling* Eight measely votes.....

Meanwhile, by the Buffet Table

MEGATRON: Everything I touch is food for my hunger. My hunger for power.

RUSTY: Wow, you get hungry? I don't, but one time, Dr. Slate gave me a fudgie buddy and another time I went to Lt. Dwyane's Nephew Jeffy's Birthday party and we had cake. I couldn't taste it, because I don't have taste receptors, but Jeffy said it was good...

MEGATRON: I was speaking figuratively you fool! You are a mere boy, get away from me!

RUSTY: But I'm a boy *robot* and we robots should stick together!

MEGATRON: I am no ROBOT! I am Megatron. I am the leader of the Decipticons and the future ruler of this galaxy!

RUSTY: Ruler... wait a minute, you're not going to try any funny business now, cause if you did, well I'd have to sure as shootin' stop ya!

MEGATRON: You're hopelessly outmatched! Don't you realize you insignifigant little ant?! Be gone before I destroy you with my Cutter Beam!

Rusty looks momentarily scared, until BIG GUY walks up behind Megatron

BIG GUY: We got a Problem here, son?

RUSTY: Big Guy! This guy said that he was going to use some kind of cut beam on me!

MEGATRON: Cut-TER Beam! CUTTER Beam, You insolent brat!

BIG GUY: Is that right? Well I might have a little problem with that.

RUSTY: You tell him Big Guy!

MEGATRON: Oh really? And what exactly are you going to do about it?

BIG GUY: Let's Dance!

Big Guy grabs Megatron and grapples with him, knocking over the buffet table

BRAK: Nooo! The weinies!!!!

Megatron stuggles and manages to throw Big Guy through a wall, but not before taking a few punches to the face

RUSTY: *worried* Big Guy!

MEGATRON: Rah! I'll turn you into scrap! You fools!

Big Guy stumbles to his feet and raises his arms to unload a barage of various projectile weapons

BIG GUY: Come and Get Some Smoldering JUSTICE!

Big Guy and Megatron battle on as Rusty's 8 year old attention Span gets the better of him and he spots JOHNNY QUEST alone in the corner, crying.

RUSTY: Hi, what's your name?

JOHNNY: Johnny Quest, *sniff*

RUSTY: What's wrong?

Johnny darts a glance towards a dark corner where all we see is a pair of eyes glowering.

JOHNNY: *whispering* He killed Bandit...

RUSTY: Who did?

TWO-FACE: *from corner* The coin told us to! The Dog was working for the Bat! He must pay! The Bat must PAY!!!!

RUSTY: *walking over to corner* Hey Mister, that wasn't ni-

Two-Face emerges from the dark, his horrible scarred side periously close to Rusty's eyes

RUSTY: AHHH!

Rusty stumbles backwards and falls to the floor, his finger knocking against a chair and setting off a blast of Nucleo Protons


Over near Big Guy and Megatron, Big Guy now has a Giant Nuclear Warhead and is about to crash it down over Megatron's head when, a bright flash of Green fills the room and Megatron is evaporated in a field of Nucleo-Protons, as Rusty gets to his feet.

RUSTY: Oops, heh heh heh. Sorry.

BIG GUY: But I didn't get to send him a Candygram. *sigh* Oh well. Nice Work, son.

Big Guy tosses the Nuke out the window where it plummets to earth and lands on top of a bright red convertable, demolishing it.

RUSTY: Gee thanks Big Guy!

MARY MARVEL: Braindead robots....

RUSTY: Hey we're not Brain Dead, we don't HAVE any brains. Wait, not that we're stupid...

And the Day is saved, Megatron is in his rightful place, and this made no sense whatsoever. C'est la vie. All right I know, it sucked, you do better then....

Wow man, you're just doing yourself a disfavor if you haven't watched BW. I had the same attitude when Beast Wars came out - I hated the idea of animal Transformers, and wanted nothing to do with the show. Then I heard about the appearances of the G1 characters in it, which got me interested. So I checked it out. And I gotta say, its so much better than anything G1 ever was. Not that I'm dissing G1 - I love it, and I've got the first season box set on preorder. But Beast Wars really was a Transformers masterpiece.

Mary Marvel is a character with history. She's been around since the 1940s, and was part of a publishing line (Fawcett's Captain Marvel series) that even outsould Superman in its heyday! She was the most powerful female hero of her day, and she's pretty damned cute too! Unfortunately for us Mary-philes, she's not doing much in comics these days, so the attention she'd get by being the subject of John Delaney sketch could help elevate her to the level of popularity she so richly deserves!

You still may be tempted to vote for someone else. But none of the frontrunners are nearly as deserving as Mary, and here's why:

Adam West Batman is a joke! He is a live-action character. This poll was inteded for comics and animation characters. (And no, I don't think the opening sequence of the Batman show is all that animated.) Not to mention the fact that his show shaped the way the gerneral public has viewed comics for the past 30 years, and that's not anything to be proud of!

Megatron is a robot. He must have been a pretty important robot of some kind, but I wouldn't know cause I've never watched Transformers. But I can tell you this... Mary Marvel is a cute chick! Most of the people voting on this poll are guys. How could you guys pick a robot over a cute chick? Get your priorities straight!

Buffy!?!? Okay, she's a cute chick, but she's not nearly as classy as Mary. And she doesn't have that girl-next-door quality that makes Mary so appealing. You won't see Mary sleeping around with vampires! Also, as with Adam West, Buffy is a live-action character. Yes, I realize there'as a Buffy comic. There was a Married With Children comic too, but that doesn't mean Al Bundy should be in the next poll!

Brak... is a frickin' moron! Sure he's funny, but he's a simplistic, one-note character. Mary is a beautiful and complex creature! Wonder Woman: "You go ahead, Supergirl. We can maintain radio contact on the way. I'll give Batgirl a lift on my invisible plane."

Later, in the skies ...

Batgirl: "Diana, can I take off my seatbelt? I can't see if the seatbelt light is still on, the plane is invisible."

Wonder Woman doesn't respond. She must not be able to hear Batgirl from the cockpit. Batgirl attempts to undo her seatbelt.

Batgirl: "Diana, I can't figure out this seatbelt buckle, the seatbelt is invisible. Diana. Hey."

Batgirl slices through the seatbelt with a batarang. She approaches Wonder Woman and walks right into a door.

Batgirl: "Diana, I walked into the cabin door because it's invisible."

Batgirl fumbles for the doorknob. Frustrated, she takes 3 steps back.

Wonder Woman: "Did you say something?"

Batgirl charges the door and rams it off its hinges, slamming it into the back of Wonder Woman's head. She's out cold. The plane takes a nosedive. The ground rushes up, about to greet Batgirl right in the face.

Batgirl: "You can't fly while unconscious! Is this because the plane is invisible?"

Batgirl throws Wonder Woman off the chair and takes the pilot's seat. She finds the stick and pulls up with all her might, but struggles as the plane continues to drop at an alarming rate. The plane dives into the city below and finally levels off between buildings. Not knowing where the brakes are, Batgirl tries her damndest not to hit anything while pulling up and out of harm's way.

In the meantime, on a nondescript building rooftop, Two-Face paces menacingly. His thugs have chained Mary Marvel to a large penny.

Two-Face: "We coulda been great together, Mary. But now I'm gonna have to cut our relationship short."
Mary Marvel: "By strapping me to a giant penny."
Two-Face: "(takes out coin) Good heads, we drop you off the side of the building. Bad heads, we drop you off the other side."
Mary Marvel: "I can fly."
Two-Face: "Not for long. (snaps)"

A thug opens up a briefcase and removes a large piece of kryptonite on a chain. He puts it around Mary's neck and stands back.

Mary Marvel: "(stares at Two-Face)"
Two-Face: "(grins)"
Mary Marvel: "(sighs)"
Two-Face: "(grins wider)"

Two-Face flips the coin high into the air. At that moment, a sonic boom passes over the rooftop.

Batgirl: "PULL UP, YOU BASTARD!"

Everyone hits the deck. Two-Face looks up. The coin is nowhere to be seen.

Two-Face: "Nobody move."

Batgirl maneuvers around more buildings and finally picks up enough altitude to be out of danger.

Batgirl: "(blindly hits buttons) Supergirl! Come in! Come on, Kara!"
Supergirl: "(over radio) Supergirl here, what's up?"
Batgirl: "Wonder Woman fainted for no reason and now I'm stuck flying this invisible plane, and I can't do it."
Supergirl: "Where are you?"
Batgirl: "Gotham."
Supergirl: "I'll find you. In the meantime, try to hold her steady."
Batgirl: "I don't know how."
Supergirl: "If I remember my plane class correctly, the first thing you do is look at that horizon thingie. Is the plane level?"
Batgirl: "I can't see it, Kara, it's invisible."
Supergirl: "Isn't there a switch that makes the plane visible?"
Batgirl: "(flicks random switch, gas starts pouring out of the fuel tank) No."
Supergirl: "Is there braille over the buttons?"
Batgirl: "Hey, I didn't think of that. (feels buttons) No, no braille. That is a hazard! What if a blind person was to fly this plane?"
Supergirl: "Don't you have a gadget that will help you see the controls?"
Batgirl: "Hmm ... I know."

Batgirl sets off a gas bomb. The gas fills the cockpit and makes all the control panels visible. But for some reason, Batgirl goes blind.

Batgirl: "TEAR GAS! AAAAAAAAA! HELP ME, KARA! THEY'RE NEVER GOING TO FIND THE BLACK BOX!"

Batgirl slams her head repeatedly against the controls in maddening pain. The radio cuts out.

Supergirl: "I'm sure she's fine."

Supergirl flies the rest of the way to the John Delaney Voting Hall. Crowds of Toon Zone Members walk through the vast hallways of the museum, many of them checking out her perky superassets. She comes to the new Cruz Wing, which splits into two hallways. "COMIC BOOK COVERS CAMPAIGNING FOR MORE VOTES" to the left and "COMIC BOOK COVERS CAMPAIGNING FOR LESS VOTES" to the right. The radio signal crackles to life.

Batgirl: "Kara, come in."
Supergirl: "Hey Barb, what's new?"
Batgirl: "Well, I survived. I managed to get a batarang through the windshield."
Supergirl: "Listen, I'm gonna go."

Supergirl clicks off. Adam West Batman runs up to her and grabs her by the arms.

Adam West: "This is it! The Riddler's latest illicit brainteaser!"
Supergirl: "The Riddler?"
Adam West: "Yes, a dastardly desperado. He has cunningly planted this S on your chest as a clue to his next mission of malevolence. Hmm, S. A voiceless consonant. The 19th letter of the alphabet, and a grade rating a student's work as satisfactory. And if 19 is satisfactory, 20 is the paramount. As in 20/20 vision, meeting a standard of normal visual acuity."
Supergirl: "You don't mean?"
Adam West: "I'm afraid so, Robin. The Riddler is going to rob the treasury of the United Arab Emirates."
Supergirl: "But how can it be?!"
Adam West: "Stay low, Robin. I never was one for spectacles. My vision is 20/20."
Joel Schumacher: "Hi, I'm Joel Schumacher. May I interest you in a free copy of Batman & Robin?"
Adam West: "Some days you just can't get rid of a bomb."

Back in Gotham, Batgirl has turned Wonder Woman's invisible plane around and is headed back home, hoping to improvise a safe landing. A few miles up, Two-Face and his gang are still on the rooftop.

Two-Face: "Mary, prepare to shake hands with your doom."
Mary Marvel: "Did you find your coin?"
Two-Face: "No, but I got this discontinued Susan B. Anthony dollar coin from 1979."
Mary Marvel: "Oh."
Two-Face: "It's hideous."
Mary Marvel: "Let's get this over with, slimeball."

Two-Face flips the coin high into the air.

Batgirl: "HEADS UP!"

The sonic boom of the plane once again passes over the rooftop, knocking everyone down. Two-Face looks around for his coin, but can't find it.

Two-Face: "Just shoot me right in the head."

Batgirl loses control of the plane when a coin comes through the broken windshield and hits her right in the eye. One of the wings sideswipes a building. Smoke pours out of a side engine and the plane spirals into an impending crash landing on Gotham Harbor. Batgirl bails out and falls into the night, where Supergirl swoops in and catches her at the last second. The plane hits a ship carrying a full load of fish and explodes in a giant blaze of fire. Supergirl lowers Batgirl down to the street.

Batgirl: "Well, you've really done it this time."

A crowd of various characters gather to watch the fishing boat burn.

Jonny Quest: "Did you see Supergirl swoop in there and save the day?"
Buffy: "Just goes to show that some things are better left to women."
Al Bundy: "Yeah. Like cookin' up fish."
Tempest: "Yah hi, I'd just like to ask everybody if anyone knows who I am."

A giant robot Tyrannosaurus rex eats Tempest.

Beast Wars Megatron: "FILTHY HUMANS. MEGATRON, TERRORIZE!"

Well, I'm not angry that Megatron won since I'm sure the sketch will be great, but I can't help but feel that a Beast Wars Megatron on the poll would draw less votes since we're already getting a transformer. The G1 Megatron will look good, but there's no competing with a robot that has a T-Rex head for a hand.

um okay... I know maybe 3 of those and one of those--- if memory serves me--- isn't in a cartoon show. You can't just create 'the perfect lineup' from your own choosing and put that for the weel because people still don't know who the heck the characters are. seems highly logical in taking choices from revcieved e-mails--- because people who take the time to submit will know what's up there--- at least to the point of what they nominated. I can go and say my perfect list right here and I'd get booed for it.

I think he meant it as a joke. Notice that Mary Marvel is with all those other characters that would get no votes and Brian has a Mary Marvel avatar. (well, he used to, just look in this thread to see his Mary Marvel posts)
