It's the same as the first, but its a comedy instead. So, seeing as I'm a bigger comedy fan than a horror one I find this one slightly better. Also, this is one of the most imaginative movies you'll ever see. Raimi & company put their creative hats for this one.

I saw this a couple years after Evil Dead, around 2001 or so, and unlike the first one, I liked this right from the get-go. I didn't mind the first one being mostly horror, but I really liked how they upped the physical comedy in the sequel and did just some really strange and bizarre stuff, even moreso than the first one. When the headless chainsaw-wielding body comes attacking in the workshed, I knew this was a truly crazy ride. Haha!!
I was confused at first if it was supposed to be a remake or a sequel, but after realizing that it was indeed a sequel (just with a retconned recap of the first movie), it didn't bother me anymore. And it's funny to see the blonde guy as a host on QVC nowadays. :D

a retconned recap of the first movie
Somehow, Sam Raimi lost the rights to the first Evil Dead so when it came time to do the second movie (which was now made by a studio and one that didn't distribute part one) Raimi was forced to re-shoot anything involving references to the previous installment.

Wasn't that also why the recap of Evil Dead II is different at the beginning of Army of Darkness? (Though some of the same footage is still used even though it was yet another studio, Universal, but some stuff is different: Linda is played by another actress, Ash cuts his hand off slightly different, etc.)

No. Universal distributed the movie, but it was still a Dino DeLaurentis production. I think Raimi re-shot certain parts of the recap (they still used scenes from EDII) just so it could become tradition to retcon the backstory. Plus, at the end of EDII we see Ash go to 1300 and defeat a deadite then become a hero to the people. All that was changed in the beginning of Army of Darkness and we had the 1300 people think Ash worked for Henry the Red and then dropped him in the pit.

My favorite of the trilogy, because it's an equal blend of horror and comedy. The scene where Ash and the objects in the cabin laugh is probably one of the most disturbing yet entertaining scenes in the horror genre, and a defining moment that shifts Ash from being a hapless victim of a nightmarish situation into a tough-skinned, guardedly crazy psychopath.
Other great parts: Ash looks for the chainsaw, but all he finds is a chalk outline where it's supposed to be; Ash's hair turning white and the flower in the pot dying upon arrival of the giant horror; The entire evil hand sequence.

I can't remember if they explained why it was another actress. Either they couldn't get a release form for the Evil Dead II actress, or they decided to make it "tradition" to replace the girlfriend every time, or something.

Huh, i dont remember the "being a hero part". It was more like people were shocked and awed him and it ended there, then AoD came out and it basicly contiuned right from there, only to find Ash wasnt as liked as he thought he would be.
EDI was well horror oriented, but EDII is the same, but just more awesome comedy added in that really worked. To me, I thought EDII was a remake of one, and AoD was the sequel.

Yea, my brother and i thought the laughing part was just crazy, but then we started laughing with Ash. Its an epidemic, you cant help but not to laugh at that scene. And he showes his posses hand whos boss, even desperate enough to cut it off, and being a complete psyco in the process (he really must have gotten pissed).
Who can forget his one liners. The word "Groovy" has now became a tough guy catch phrase before he does something bad to the bone. Army of Darkness just added more, even to have a video game quote him (Duke Nukem 3D anyone?)
I personally like EDII than the first movie, but, all Evil Dead fans will agree, you havent seen Ash Williams till you see Army of Darkness.
Groovy...

Remember Sam Raimi's cameo where he shouts something like "a hero has fallen from the skies" and they all bow down and Ash starts screaming, "No"? Yea, all that was changed in the beginning of AOD.
