I think I would hate it. Knowing Disney's track record they would probably require every Marvel book to adopt a "cute little girl or boy" to make the stories more child friendly. Not only that but Wolverine would be changed from the trained killer he is to having plastic blades and the ability to comb peoples hair. I'm also sure that Disney's new reprint policy would be to cut selected artwork from a bunch of different time periods and slap it all together to make a new story (don't think so, check out what they're doing to the Spidey:TAS toon). Besides does anyone really want to see the Hulk partying with Pluto and Mickey Mouse. Not I (unless he's screaming HULK SMASH PUNY MOUSE!!!).
Personally if this deal goes through I think Marvel will be forgotten and Disney will have destroyed something that I hold near and dear to my heart - the legacy of a man named Stan.

I hope they don't buy Marvel. I can already imagine the damage they would do. I would rathar see AOLTW pick up Marvel then see Disney buy it. It would just ruin the company.

oooh, then there'd be even more Marvel DC crossovers...maybe even a merger...that would be hell on the copywrite holders, great for the storylines..(for a while @least)

Doesn't AOLTW own Detective Comics? If that is the case then it would be worse for WB to own them than Disney. Comic books are too expensive with out being a monopoly.

I think gargoyles proves that disney is'nt afraid to take chances and do edgy adult, but tasteful, stories.

I have to disagree. Despite marvels posturing and bragging about how the sles on their books have increased since the new regime took over, the company is still a mess both financialy and in my oppinion, creatively.

Why can't Disney just be satisfied with the companies they already have? I don't want to live in a world where all my entertainment is licensed or owned by Disney (which is very likely if things keep going the way it is). I don't hate Disney, but there has to be a limit. Isn't there some sort of monopoly law?

That's sorta frightening. I know a lot of folks don't like the hype machine that the new EIC of Marvel has going (go on USEnet & see), but a lot of cool advancements have been done. A newer, looser in-house code, the very concept of the MAX line, and books more open to satire... Disney would KILL these. Yeah, they've done some brave stuff, but a lot of these attempts (except Gargoyles) fail & they return to the same old stuff. I like the newer, braver Marvel; I don't want them to return to the same old stuff.

I believe Vince Mcmahon said it best: "It's not just a 'no', it's a ...OOOOOHHHH HEEEEELLLL NNNNOOOOO!!!"

Well, here's a brighter look at the possibilities....
Marvel stays as a development property with some commercial output, just like before. Some Disney properties with sizeable fanbases not quite big enough to substain an animated continuation get a chance in comics. (Gargoyles, hint hint) The fact is, if Disney has film companies releasing less commercial fare like Trainspotting, why would a comic company which has even less mass recognition be any different than before?

I don't think there would be a major difference in content, to be honest. Disney would probably treat it like they treat their Miramax--they'd help with the finances and marketing, but there wouldn't be a radical change in how the stories are told.
Yes, AOLTW does own DC, I believe. And they're in solid financial shape, compared to Marvel.

Hokey Cow! What's Disney gonna buy next, News Corp? (Shutter) I always use to think that News Corp should buy Marvel because the X-Men & Spider-Man shows aired on FOX, and that they would release movie based on the comics. But after seeing how they treated some movies, and dropped some great shows in favor of crap (Family Guy, we'll miss you.) I began to lose faith in them. Say what you want about Disney, (And belive me, I don't blaim you.) but their 2 disc sets are some of the best stuff around.

Disney buying Marvel just won't work. Why? Because for one thing, Marvel charaters already appear at Universal's Islands Of Adventure park. Number two, various Marvel characters are spread out through other studios with film and television rights. I am sure that Disney did indeed buy Marvel they would want to have total control over all Marvel theme parks, movies, and tv shows. On a side note, Disney is more interested in the Jim Henson Company. Which it look like it will finally happen. Mr. Eisner want to finish the job he started with the oringal 1989 merger and get it done.
P.S. Did you know that Disney has a chance to buy Nick & MTV in the early 90s as well as a chance at Hanna-Barbera. Unfourtanly Mr.Eisner didn't think that they would add much to the company. Oh, Disney almost bought Universal two years ago. Disney would have owned all of Orlando.

IMHO, if in fact Disney does want to dip a toe back into comics, it should just re-license its own characters to the Gladstone folks (are they still out there?) and restore the focus on all those fine works by Carl Barks, Floyd Gottfredson, the Gutenberghus Group, Don Rosa... :D

I don't know if marvel having various tv/movie projects at different studio's would prevent disney from buying marvel. Afte all universal studio's still got the rights to make 2 swamp thing movie's and a tv show based on the DC character despite DC being owned by warner brothers. Also paramont is distributing the gen 13 movie in europe and buenis vista is supposed to distibute in the U.S. despite the characters being owned by wildstorm, which is owned by DC, which is owned by AOL/TIME/WARNER.
Heck if marvel was bought by disney they would have enough money to out bid small comic companies like dreamwave studio's for the licensing rights for hot propeties like the transformers. Also if disney already own all the animated and live action tv programs of saban (which would include the x-men 90's animated series and other marvel cartoons that were either produced or distributed by saban) would'nt buying marvel be the next logical step. Heck I would love for disney to take x-men TAS and reanimate and redraw the entire series, without changing the stories and voice actors.

IF Disney should buy Marvel it would only be in Marvels best intrest to help off set some of the financial and overhead cost of some of it's projects. if it works it'll be all good for marvel and more money for Disney. I'm just praying that one day when i bring my children to Disney World we're not confronted with Mickey Mouse and Stan Lee at the front gates greeting us with "hello, boys and girls"..."EXCELSIOR"...welcome true believers....., aahhhhhhhhhh ! (family flees from Disney World front entrence in terror.) oh , the horror.....the horror. :wakko:

If this happened, I could only imagine the horror unleashed on the world. We'd start seeing Mickey Mouse vs. the X-Men comics right off the bat. Wait a minute...that actually might be cool!

I remember Disney producing their own line of comics in the early 90's. Some of them based on their TV shows like DuckTales, Rescue Rangers, and TaleSpin. Unfortunately, the closed shop because most of the management didn't have any experience in Comics. Disney buying Marvel would get more confusing since most of their characters have been optioned for movie, and TV projects by other studios.

I think those were from Gladstone. Those were fine, hugely underrated comics. I think what turned me off the most, however, were not the stories and art, as they were top notch, but the number of titles available, and the cost of the books. If they had a way to put out comics for a lower price than any other comic book available so kids could buy them, and distribute them all over, not just comic stores, but book stores and grocery stores and drug stores and gas stations and all over. I think it would be a no brainer to move truckloads of those things, but it's all about marketing and pricing the product right to make it more of an impulse buy rather than something people feel they have to budget for.

take heart jj i don't think Disney doesn't have some secret of right-wing agenda, to the contrary they sponcer an "alternative lifestyle"week at disney world and offer employees of "alternative lifestyle" benefit packages for them and their life partners so they can't be all that bad. :p :D
I just don't want to one day be channel surfing and come apon the Disney channel, come across an episode of "House of Mouse" and see Stan Lee, DR.Doom, The Thing, and the Red Skull sitting at a table making small talk , while Galactius is outside the niteclub and the bouncer wont let him in. :bosko:

We really don't need any more of the "kiddie" stuff that Disney is currently into, or misuse of the classic characters. Besides, the Disney company has enough power already.

Personally, I think that AOL Time Warner has more power than Disney. Think about it, Looney Tunes, DC Comics, Some old MGM films, People, Time, Teen People, other magazines, CNN, Sports Illstruated, and the list goes on. Add to that AOL and the cable system, you have a monoply of sorts. I read that AOL Time Warner is very interested in buying NBC. Oh well if that happens all the majors networks will be owned by a major movie studio.
Back to the topic, I remeber the Disney comics back in the early 90's where they launch the new line. It had a Roger Rabbit comics, Uncle Scrooge, Duck Tales, Mickey, Donald, Goofy, Reasue Rangers, Little Mermaid, Disney Comics, and others. I have the first issues of Mickey Mouse Comics, Goofy Comics, and Darkwing Duck from the early 90s. After Disney stopped doing the comics, Marvel did some including a short lived Gargoyle one I think. When I used to get Disney Adventure, they always had a comic section in the magazine. I don't know if they still do this but it was very good. They put Jeff Smith's "Bone" in it for a while and that was cool. To come to think about it, that first time I found out about "Bone".
