View Full Version : Your TV Connection: Cable, Satellite, or Over-The-Air?

I feel confused from time to time. Not everyone here has the same type of television connection. I also feel alone when describing how bad Cartoon Network is in HD. So, to relive myself of confusion, and to get a better glimpse of the habits of the Toon Zone Community, I want to know how you get your television. Do you have cable? Is there a satellite dish in front of your home? Can't afford either or don't believe in television? You have a TiVo or DVR? Got digital cable? Rockin it in HD? Answer, vote in the poll, and mention who you're getting your tv fix from (Dish Network, Directv, Comcast, Cox, Cablevision, etc)

PS: If you're not living in the US and want to participate, you can still mention who's your TV provider.

EDIT: I'll start. I have DirecTV. I have a HD receiver in my room, along with the living room, and a DVR receiver in my parents' room (which doesn't have HD). We also have the most basic cable service available (17 channels) in the living room, but that's to keep/justify the TiVo service which my family had before we even got an HDTV.

I have 3 cable boxes from Cablevision/IO in my house, I think one or two of them are the HD ones. One of them is in the Basement, that the one that I know is in HD with my second room, one in my parents room since well they deserve it, the other one is in the Living Room, which anyone can watch. The TV's in my brother and I, my sister, and Grandma room has a basic cable connection, no fancy box or anything of the sort, just a basic connection.

I have an OTA antenna. I get CBS and KET, Kentucky Educational Television. They're split digital signals, though, with four different KET channels and two different CBS channels. One channel airs some CBS programming in HD and one of the KET channels airs HD programming. I thought about getting DirecTV for HD channels but I think I would be disappointed with the downgrade from watching OTA HD.

We'd had Basic Cable since about 1992 (I basically made my parents get it so I could see Batman: The Animated Series, since our OTA reception on Fox was terrible), but earlier this summer we finally upgraded to Digital Cable through Comcast.

We have cable boxes (with just a standard subscription package, no higher-end special channels or movie stations) on the downstairs TV and the one upstairs in the spare room, which is basically our "Entertainment Room." (No HD receiver on either, nor Tivo or DVR. Downstairs has just a DVD player, upstairs has a DVD player and a VCR, along with our game systems.) My brother's small TV in his room is still hooked up to just Basic Cable.

Let's see... 2 digi-cable boxes (HD Ready actually), and every tv after that is just regular cable.

We might switch to satellite later though.

Back at home, i have cable (Comcast), and HD.
I used to be with DirecTV until i switched to Comcast in 2007.
Over here, i only have Over the air signals (until 2/17/09) i might need to by the converter boxes before then...

My brother has digital in his room while I have basic in my bedroom and the living room. I did have digital in my room from last october until the box died this past July.

We currently have DirecTV HD; we switched from Comcast Digital Cable in 2004 (we had to drop Comcast because their rates and billing cycles were killing us), and finally upgraded to HD last year.

Our house has 4 receivers: one in the master bedroom, one in the living room with a DVR (though not HD), one in the basement and one in Blackstar and my other brother's room (also not HD).

We have had Digital cable in my house since 2001 on the TV's in the living room and the rec room, but I have a little black and white TV in my room that gets over the air.

I get the ever cost increasing Comcast Digital Cable

when I go to college I have no plans to get any sort of cable though. Gotta put that money towards high speed internet!

I get basic cable in my home and in the dorm rooms here. It does justice for me, I don't really need a thousand channels to choose from. :p

At home, my family and I have Comcast digital cable on the living room television and basic cable on the other four TV's.

Isn't the You Are Here block of shows in HD?

I just bought a VGA cable and hooked my PC to my HDTV. Stuff from Hulu and sites like that look nearly as good as 480i things look. I really enjoyed being able to watch Total Drama Island and not squint at the screen so much.

I get cable at college. My parents are still in the process of moving into their new home, so are trying to decide what to do for cable. They had Dish Network at the old house, but didn't have a good experience with them so are probably going to switch to cable here.

Isn't the You Are Here block of shows in HD?They are, but all the HD content (including both CN and [as]) is shown and only shown during that block. The repeats outside of the block are shown in glorious stretch-o-vision (black bars and all for Clone Wars; can't confirm whether or not Secret Saturdays or B10AF Season 2). And, since I work Friday nights and lack a HD DVR, I can't see it. :( We were suppose to get an HD DVR for the living room when we first got DirecTV, but the installers gave us a regular HD receiver instead and we kept it ever since. Eventually, my dad will upgrade the receiver to a DVR since DTV is carrying 3 of our 4 locals (CBS, NBC, ABC) in HD and he wanted them all along.

DISH Network with the DVR package. No HD as my grandparents don't have an HDTV and my TV is 11 years old...

Back up until 2001, we had it from a local company(I think), it was one of those HUGE satellites that we had. You know, the one's that turned. I was actually disappointed when we cut it off. We still have it laying around though...

Oh yeah, we used to have an antenna until 2000 as well.... when wind blew it down... it's still laying around to...

I have Comcast Digital Cable. I can't stand Comcast though due to their high prices and bad customer service. The problem is, they're a monopoly in my area, and we're unable to get satellite.

I actually have a question that's kind of offtopic, but I didn't want to waste another thread.

I have Cox Digital Cable and was wondering if there's a way to watch something else while recording on a VCR (the VCR/TV button doesn't work). The VCR is hooked up by coaxial cables.

Right now, basic cable. I had Digital Cable with free HD channels, but had to downgrade to cut down on expenses. (Isn't everybody these days?)

But I can still pick up a few Digital stations without the cable box such as Channel Thirteen (HD) and the Kids Thirteen channel, WPIX 11 and FOX 5 (both HD), NY 1, and Universal HD, to name a few off the top of my head.
Oh yeah, and the Big Ten Network.

I kinda miss having a box, especially since I could connect it to my DVD recorder/VCR to tape shows I wanted to watch.

I put myself down as basic cable, because even though we have digital, it's not in my room and I don't get to watch it very often. My provider is a local output called Atlantic Broadband. They are expensive but they don't whine when you need a service call. My hdtv is from 1985, so it's not on the same standard as today's programming. :p

Satellite for me (C-band). Over the past two years all the analog master feed channels have converted to digital, which my satellite provider has to re-uplink and convert to a different format that my old receiver can understand. It would be nice to get all the modern digital and HD master feeds, but they're encrypted in a special format and there are no consumer receivers that can decode them.

I also have Comcast basic cable, which sucks. Their Cartoon Network isn't even in stereo.

Your cable goes to a box before it goes to the VCR and is digital? If so, I don't believe there's any way to do what you're asking.
