View Full Version : First movie you ever saw at the theater?

My first film that I have any memory of seeing on the big screen was Aladdin (1992), though I'm told that I tagged along with my sister when my family went to see Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid (we saw every Disney summer animated movie in theaters until Treasure Planet...yeah, we even saw Atlantis). I believe we saw them at either the AMC or the Century theaters nearby, both of which we still go to :) If we're talking live-action though, it was either Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (I might just have seen pictures of it) or The Pagemaster (guess we were big Macaulay Culkin fans).
And just for random, the most recent movie I've seen is Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist. Not bad at all, actually.
How about the rest of y'all?

The Empire Strikes Back. I don't remember much of that first viewing, though, except for vague memories of the probe landing on Hoth, Luke cutting the fake Vader's head off on Dagobah, and frozen Han being lifted out of the carbonite chamber - I was only three years old at the time.

I'm not sure (and I'll probably never find out because they only people who actually know this have passed away) but either a reissue of Disney's Alice in Wonderland, E.T. or Return of the Jedi.

I'm not sure THE first, but my parents have told me I saw The Fox and the Hound in theaters as a toddler, though by that time it was a few years old (as I wasn't alive when it was first released). Obviously though, since I was only two, I don't remember that experience at all.

I thought that it was Aladdin back in 1992, but I don't think that was it. I only remember standing in a line in Burger King playing with one of the toys or imagining playing with one of the toys in my mind. I was only three at the time anyway. I do remember seeing The Lion King in theaters with my parents. I think I went and saw that movie like two or three more times after that.

The three earliest films I recall sitting in a theater to see are Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Back to the Future Part III, and Ghostbusters II. I may have seen others before Crusade, but those all stand out because I had only seen the precursor films on home video and seeing the sequels in a theater with a giant screen was incredible.

First movie was back in 1989, well that's what my mom told me, when I saw Who Framed Roger Rabbit. I was born back then so I didn't remember the film until I got the video and DVD.

I actually spent some time this summer compiling a list of every movie I've ever seen in the theater (original run, special screening, etc.) Aside from maybe a couple, I think I've gotten them all, noting the year, theater/location, and how many times I saw them. (Don't ask me why. I guess I was just bored one day. :) )
Technically, the first movie I saw in the theater was Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981. According to my parents, I saw it with them at the drive-in, though I only recall faint images since I was about three years old. The next movie I saw was Return of the Jedi in 1983. I have a minor recollection of that, as I was about five.
But the earliest movie experience I have the clearest memory of is Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom in 1984. I also saw Ghostbusters and Gremlins that same year and have a good memory of them. My mom likes to remember how I liked Gremlins until they changed, then I wanted to leave, but she was like, "We drove all the way here and paid, we're staying until it's over." :D

I have no idea what my first one was. The earliest I can remember is Aladdin in November or December 1992, but I was six years old then, so I suspect I must have gone to a theater at least once before. (My mom remembers taking me to the movies as early as 1990, but she can't recall which movie we saw - given my love of the Disney output as a child, it might have been The Rescuers Down Under.)

Ah crap, I might have seen that in theaters too...though I saw so many things on VHS when I was very little that anything before '92 is a bit of a blur.

It was one of the Star Trek movies. I don't remember which one, as I fell asleep during it, but I do remember it being a big deal because it was the first movie I ever saw in a theater. The first I actually remember was Back to the Future II. Although being 7 years old combined with the fact that I hadn't seen part 1 at that point left me incredibly confused.

The movie was An American Tale, by the way.

The Lion King was released in 1994; perhaps you might have seen We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story in 1993. (Jurassic Park also came out in '93, but it's not exactly a kids' movie.)

Well, I probably missed one or two, but we got shown theatrical-released movies so infrequently at school that it only took a little brain-wracking and some Google searches to come up with the names...plus, I started the list when I was 18, so I was pretty close to when I'd seen these things (and also only 1/3rd of the list is from before 2005, which is the sickest part lol). And who could ever forget Run Lola Run, really?

Why do some of the hardcore Disney fans disliked the short. I didn't think it was terrible. It might not be the most memorable but it at least brought the mouse back to the big screen.

I agree with you. I thought it was great. Like I said, it was very stylish, and I thought Kelsey Grammer was great as Dr. Frankenollie. From what I've heard, some fans just didn't like seeing such a dark Mickey short in which he's portrayed so crazily. I got the general feeling that they felt it betrayed the nature of the character or something like that.

I felt cheated - my sister dragged my dad and me to see Thumbelina in 1994, and the theater we went to didn't show the "Animaniacs" short at the beginning. Either that, or we came in late, I can't recall.
Cartoons before movies were the primary incentive for me to see certain films that I'd have no interest in otherwise. Later in '94, I went to see Richie Rich only because it came with Chuck Jones' "Chariots of Fur" at the beginning.

I know what you mean, when The Neverending Story 2 came out they said there would be the new Bugs Bunny short at the beginning called Box Office Bunny. Mom and I went in early but it never showed up even after the credits and I remember seeing a few others waiting for that short too. Turns out the stupid theatre showed it in a completely different theatre all on its own. I wish they would have explained that better.

I'm with you on that; I had to see a lot of cool movies on VHS, though that was mostly because of my mother's apathy towards taking us to the movies when we were young. I doubt the Land Before Time would've been much better on the big screen anyway; Bluth's stuff seems better suited for a smaller scene.

The first I remember clearly seeing was E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial back in 1982 at the old Plaza Cinema. I was four years old. My grandma took me and my younger cousin. Didn't go to many movies when I was younger probably because there weren't a lot of theaters within the immediate vicinity of the house, and the good ones were way out of the way, so it had to be a special event to go. At least, that's how my grandma felt.
Haven't seen it in forever, but I clearly remember seeing The Ice Pirates in the theaters one time when my mom and some of her friends went to the movies. Same thing with Vacation, European Vacation, Lethal Weapon, and Batman.
