This was a tough one. I love Riddler eps., and I've always liked Off Balance. But really this comes down to Almost Got 'im, or I am the Night. Almost Got 'im is a classic, but I am the Night is the ultimate Batman episode, so I had to go with that.

I was torn between Day of the Samauri and I am the Night. Day of the Samauri is an interesting look into the past of Bruce Wayne, and a unique chance for Bruce Himself to be thanked for the actions of Batman. Something which happens all too rarely.
But in the end I am the night is one of the Ultimate episodes that not only re-defines what he does, but why he does it. His parents loss caused him to become batman, but without Batman, Bruce's friends like Comissioner Gordon would have died many times over.
In this way batman's actions change from the revenge of a son, to that of a great Hero of Justice.

I Am the Night. No contest. Again, some of the best characterization Batman has ever been offered in the whole BTAS run, powerful story, great animation... it has everything a BTAS show could ever dream of.

Yet again, a Riddler episode goes by without my vote :( . Sorry Riddler, but Almost Got Im was just too good to pass up! On that note, it really is too bad that Riddler didn't get a spotlight in Almost Got Im. I think I'd rather prefer one of his intricate tales to Ivy's 'exploding pumpkins' :D Anywho, not only was it overall funny, creative, and surprising; but it gave us a look at what the villains think of Bats, and an interesting notion of them all actually plotting together. Just plain great ep!
Notable mentions are I Am the Night for its powerful portrayal of both Bats and Gordon, Day of the Samurai because I love Kyodi Ken, and Birds of a Feather for being the funnest Penguin episode ever!

Howdy all,
Had to go with "Almost Got 'Im". In addition to featuring 4 of the top Batman villains, we got a great deception on Batman's part (and one of the coolest ways to reveal the secret), some great thematic unities ("There's more than one way to 'Get' someone" takes on a new meaning by the end of the episode), a huge heaping helping of Paul Dini humor, and the cops with lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of guns. I mean it -- we're talking a Matrix-y "We need guns. Lots of guns." number of guns at the end.
I liked "I Am the Night," but thought it was way too predictable and kind of hokey. It also completely fell down on its face by the end when Batman throws his shuriken into the Jazzman's gun barrel (yeah, yeah, I know, there's lots of plausibility problems in "Almost Got 'Im," too...). On the plus side, it did feature Seth Green in a pre-Buffy role (who I thought was Michael J. Fox).

Almost Got 'Im is the best batman eps for this poll since it is the first time that almost all of the villains joined together. It has a humorous quality to it. It is not a typical Batman eps where only violence and tragedy are the main emotional themes in the story. It is quirky, yet it is still an adventure. :D  :p
Easy one this week. I am the Night gets my vote. Almost Got 'Im was OK, but I really felt like it all went a bit too fast, there was not enough time to add any depth to the stories. Perhaps it would have been better as a 2 parter.

1. This is a day in the life of Batman, showing him in one of his lower moments. He wonders if he's truly making a difference.
2. A reference to the first Scarecrow ep, where Batman says "I am Vengeance. 'I am the Night', et cetera ."
3. The story didn't revolve around marquee Rogues(except for a brief cameo from the Penguin), but rather an ordinary criminal trying to take out the Commissioner.
4. Shades of another fave of mine, Over the Edge.
Drat you all. It had Heart of Steel pt. 2 and Off Balance on there, but I am the Night deserves its Oscar.

Poison Ivy: "And--?"
Killer Croc: "I threw a rock at him!"

Poison Ivy: So, Harvey, when became of the giant penny?
Killer Croc: It was a big rock. . .

Usually I just pick one quote from one person, but that exchange was just too good not to put up. I can easily say this is one of my favorite episodes. I like how this one focuses on the different villains and their stories. A fun episode. :D

For me this is easily the hardest poll in the entire contest due to the amount of great episodes in this batch of ten. I loved "Almost Got 'Im" due to the great writing, and how every villain gets a shot at the spotlight, not to mentio the clever twists seen throughout the episode. I also liked "Off Balance," mainly due to the fact that it is a great lead-in to one of my favorite villains of the series, Ra's Al Ghoul (how can you top the suspense of that ending?). I also enjoyed "Tyger, Tyger," "Day of the Samurai," and "Heart of Steel: Part 2," but in the end, I had to go with "I am the Night," due to its great character development of Batman. It was a absolute perfect example of why Batman is no ordinary superhero, in that he is, after all, a human, with a pain he constantly carries with him. What an episode. Although voting at all in this one seemed unfair since you can't pick all of them, this episode seemed to be a touch above the rest in my opinion.

I agree with everyone else...this is a tough one!
But for me, it has to be, "I Am the Night."
This episode absolutely blew me away when I first saw it. It really cemented in my mind that this series was truly meant for adults in every way...I even remember being practically brought to tears when Bats lays down the flowers on the "spot" and also sharing his outrage when the petty thug falls right on top of them...the expression on his face when he sees this is still etched in my mind.) And of course his trashing of the Batcave and that primal scream was mind-boggling, too!
Never had an animated show prior to this one evoked such emotions from me...indeed, few "live" shows have been able to accomplish this either for that matter.
Add to that the incredible score, the great animation, the slow-motion climax...one of the best 22 minutes ever shown on TV, animated or otherwise, IMHO!

I just wanted to add another 2 cents on Almost Got Im!
There are just too many good lines in this episode. Everyone's theories on Batman, Two Face reacting to Ivy's appearance, "I threw a rock at him :p ", Two Face explaining where the big penny went, everyone's reaction to the "Aviary of DOOM", Harley's ultimatum, and, of course, Selina's scene-closing line.
You know, when I first watched the series as the ignorant-of-comic-continuity kid, I never thought of Selina as a badgal until this ep, which I find kind of wierd now. Oh well.

It was a tough decison, but "Almost Got 'Im" gets my vote. I especially liked the Joker's constant taunting of the other villains in the beginning of the episode, as well as the rare encounter of Catwoman vs. Harley Quinn. :D

Really quick observation...
The only reason Almost Got 'Im is winning is because people just like episodes with a lot of villains, and not necessarily the most powerful, dramatic episodes.
I Am The Night just may be the best episode of the entire series.
Joker_Junior

I second that. I am the Night is by far the best episode of Batman Animated because it defines Batman/Bruce Wayne so incredibly well. Aw come on - don't discount how we all loved our Almost Got 'Im with a simple and insulting: We like eps with lots of villains.
I think we have quite the unusual poll this time around! On one hand, we have I Am the Night, a powerful dramatic and character-driven episode where Batman realizes that his task truly is a fool's errand. Good people are hurt, Gordon is targeted for murder, Batman fails in one of his missions, and people walk over a tribute to Batman's parents. The lines in this ep were always strong, from Batman's self-inflection and the poignant attacks by Bullock (making him, at that time, my very absolute least fave character) to Gordon's waking tribute to the Bat.
On the other hand, we have Almost Got 'Im, which is the complete opposite of I Am the Night! Here is a laugh-out-loud parody of Batman in general, making fun of the suped up set-pieces and plans of Batman's top rogue gallery, as well as showing us the super-hero invincibility and ingenuity that is the Bat. Cute scenes all around make this one a classic!
From there, its just viewer preference. Me, I'm the type of guy who loves Joker's Millions, The Man Who Killed Batman, Harley's Holiday, and other unusual but fun episodes! Usually, if one of them was up against I Am the Night, I wouldn't give it a second thought and go with the drama. But Almost Got 'Im? IMO, I just loved and enjoyed it so much more!

This is the easiest vote for me so far. My favorite episode of B:TAS happens to be "I am the night"
So it really was not hard to choose this time around.
I will be very sad if that great episode does not make it past the first round.
Mister Intensity
03-05-2002, 09:01 AM
This is one of the easier choices. Although Almost Got 'Em has its merits, I Am the Night is probably the best episode ever. If there was one episode I would show to someone that never seen B:TAS, I Am the Night would be the one.
Almost every major character on the show had his/her moment. From a pre-Batgirl Barbara mourning her father to Bullock confronting Batman to Dick vowing to use everything he learned to stop Gordon's would be assassin (besides, the scene with Dick starting his cycle was just cool) to Gordon's confession of his feelings to Batman to the Dark Knight's realization that he was about to lose his father figure, this episode had everything.
It was a strong character piece that represented B:TAS at its best. It may have been Bruce's story but everyone had his/her moment to shine.

Howdy all,
You know, I would feel really bad for almost all the other choices on this poll if it weren't for the fact that most of them, um, sucked IMO (Heart of Steel Pt. 2 being a notable exception =8^). I did want to bring up the ending of "Day of the Samurai," though, which was a big kick in the pants to me at the time:
when the lava flow separates Batman and Kyodai Ken, and Bats throws a rope to him. The way Kyodai looks at the rope, gets this sad, melancholy look on his face, kicks away the rope, and then bows to Batman as the lava takes him.
It took a 2-dimensional character and suddenly gave him depth, IMO. The fact that Bruce is willing to speak Japanese to his sensei (even if it's a badly accented "Domo arigato") gave the ep brownie points to me, too.
BTW, Clark J., I can't speak for others, but the number of villians in "Almost Got 'Im" had little to do with my picking it up over "I Am the Night." It boils down to 2 reasons, working in conjunction with each other:
1. "I Am the Night" is Dark & Dramatic, but we get LOTS of Dark & Dramatic
I think people are right in saying that "I Am the Night" is one of the best darker and dramatic episodes of BTAS, but we have LOTS of darker and dramatic episodes throughout the series ("Heart of Ice," "On Leather Wings," "Appointment in Crime Alley," "Robin's Reckoning," or any of the Scarecrow episodes), some of which I consider better episodes than even "I Am the Night" (and which got my votes in prior polls).
2. "Almost Got 'Im" is just a heck of a lot of fun.
Not dark, not grim-n-gritty, not dramatic or histrionic -- it was FUN. It managed a delicate balance between seriousness to the source material (that electrocution scene with the Joker was pretty creepy, IMO) and the inherent humor and, frankly, silliness in the Batman universe without ever tilting too far in either direction. I think the only other story to pull this off as well was "Mad Love".
When you get down to it, almost the entire exercise is pretty ridiculous -- a man dressed like Dracula gets into fights with a freakshow circus of bad guys. Why not poke a little fun at it, and orient an entire episode around the oversized cliches and near misses that form most of comic book storytelling? The fact that "Almost Got 'Im" managed to do so without being condescending, insulting, campy, or just really really stupid gives it the edge, IMO.

I am not saying that "Almost Got 'Im" was a bad episode. I loved the plot twist, and the scene when they find out "Killer Croc's secret" was just great. Even better was the final line of the episode.

After long and hard considertion, mind-draining thought, and unhealthy levels of debate.....I chose.....
Oh wait, it only took me about five seconds.
I saw I am the Night, and I voted for I am the Night. Not only is it one of my top five best episodes in all cartoons of all time (that I can think of, of course....there have been a few) but also it just may be my favorite Batman episode of all time.
Excellent characterization. Batman forced to think about what he does....and boy does he. The animated series hits this to a tee.
Compelling dialogue. Up there with Two-Face pt. 1, probably beating it for best in the series.
Moving emotions, that weren't just negative or just positive. This episode showed a great and realistic shift in mood as its contents unfolded.
And finally, just a great story. While Almost Got 'Im is a great story, I just feel I am the Night has more to offer, aside from the fact that its neat to see the interaction of many of the villians. Both were good stories in their own right, and good episodes......but I am the Night gets my nod.

I voted for Moon of the Wolf for many reasons. One reason is I thought it was an awesome story. Another reason is I've loved werewolves since I was about 7 or 8. "Almost Got 'Im" rawked!!!
Loved the ORIGINAL short stories, especially the Letterman-esque performance of the Joker of Late Night Gotham Live.
This episode really dives into the Joker's love of self. He no doubt called together an impromptu meeting at the Stacked Deck. Joker knew the Batman would become the topic of discussion. Penguin takes the bait and it's on after that. Ego at stake, each proclaims his/her's best efforts at snuffing the Bat.
Joker merely laughs. And then he lays it on the table. He even went through the trouble of bringing along a tv-vcr set.
He'd won: he had the best scheme AND he swindled the field.
This episode inspired a wonderful WB lim ed cel. I had to have it.
Anyone else who's seen it can attest to its beauty.

I believe the success of the entire series, were the outstanding stories and how they were told. That is why this one got my vote. " Almost Got em," sure is interesting, but more of a montage with a little bit about all the major villians.. "The Trial" offers a more interesting setting, and in some ways, keeps my attention better....I think that was one of the better later efforts... Stuart

Honestly I'm surprised...
That Almost Got 'Im dominated the poll. I thought I Am the Night would have put up more of a fight.

I disagree. I think that the animation for "Almost Got'Im" is very good. Perhaps just one notch below the best the series ever offered.
I think that the animation is much better than other popular episodes on some of the previous polls, like "Perchance to Dream" and "Appointment in Crime Alley." And I find that very curious, because I've seen Dong Yang (which provided the animation for "Perchance" and "Appointment") listed as the animation house for "Got 'Im."
However, I think that the style for "Got 'Im" is very similar to the quality of Spectrum. Anyone else have an idea/opinion on that?
By the way, I do enjoy animation of Sunrise Studio which animated "I Am the Night." The characeters look very heavy and bulky (but not unattractive) and seem to carry a lot of visible emotion.

One other thing,
Does anyone know the reason why Poison Ivy is wearing what is basically just a one-piece swimsuit in her flashback sequence in "Almost Got 'Im" instead of her regular costume?
I could understand it if the show was a "clip" episode and the explanation was found in a different episode, but that is all new footage.
Anybody know?

If I had to guess, they were just trying out something new (notice her outfit in the flashback is somewhat similar to her TNBA outfit), and didn't want to ruin a whole new episode if it stunk.

Yeah, could be. The whole thing is very strange, though. The outfit in "Almost Got 'Im" doesn't even include shoes.

Hold on a sec, last week you said you voted randomly. This week, you're picking an ep that you haven't even watched? This isn't a joke poll Rimma, if you're not going to support a valid opinion, don't participate.

Isn't Rimma from Russia or something? Perhaps BTAS was not as available in Russia as it was elsewhere, but it didn't prevent Rimma from becoming a fan.
I think that everyone should be able to vote in the poll, whether they've seen every episode, or none of the episodes. Others have stated that they only voted for the episodes that they have seen and ignored the ones that they've missed. What Rimma is doing is practically the same thing.
Sure, this isn't a joke poll, but it is just for a cartoon series. The same kind of thing happens in real political elections all the time, and nobody is prevented from voting in those.
In a poll that Jim Harvey has told us depends on participation for survival, I think that Rimma is actually doing his/her part. Keep on voting, Rimma! (And to answer your question: no, "Birds of a Feather" was not very good).

Really, I thought "Birds of a Feather" was quite good, story wise. Sure the animation (from what I remember the last time I saw the ep) was horrid, but I loved the story especially since The Penguin was actually trying to go legit.
Defiantly one of the more underrated episodes, IMO. Not in the same league as "I Am the Night" or "Almost Got 'Im". But still a good one.

From what I understand, Rimma has seen some BTAS eps. If that's the case, she should only choose from the one's she's seen. And if she hasn't seen any of the 10 eps in this poll, then she should wait for another week where there's an episode she has seen. Blind participation for the sake of participation doesn't contribute anything.

Which is why the electoral college exists. People's votes don't really matter when it counts.

Without getting into a big to-do about the ethics of uninformed voting, it would probably be best that people who cast uninformed votes not advertise the fact.
Look, we can't keep Rimma (or anyone else) from voting for episodes she's never seen. I think it's a bad idea to cast such a vote, and I'll go on record as saying so. (Garbage in, garbage out.) But anyone who does cast a random vote should at least have the courtesy not to proclaim the fact, because it will only give lots of other people heartburn.

That makes good sense, but it seems as though the number of people participating in the poll is almost as important as the result. I think Rimma (or anyone else) should go ahead and vote even if they've never seen the episodes in that particular group.

Are you being sarcastic? I thought that the most recent Presidential election showed us that even w/the electoral college in place, one vote can make all the difference in the world.

Ok, this is going to be my last response to this, because I don't want this to get out of hand and because we're getting a little off-topic.
We all want this poll to go well, we all want scads of participation. But it should be meaningful participation. If we really wanted more votes, we could just go around asking random people if they're Batman fans, and if so, we could ask them to choose from a handful of episodes, whether they've ever seen BTAS or not. Quantity is important, but quality is more important. We want this poll to be representative of us Bat-fans. It's not perfect, but random voting isn't going to help any. I know Rimma's vote wont affect the outcome, so it shouldn't matter if she picked randomly. But if you've seen the last two Delaney polls, they have been tight with a capital T. If one of these episodes polls came down to the wire like that, I wouldn't want a handful of random votes determining the outcome.
That said, Maxie's right. We can't force anyone to not vote randomly. However, like Maxie said, DO NOT post saying you picked randomly. It just sets you up to be flamed.

Well, technically, Gore won didn't he? By about 550,000 votes. If there wasn't an electoral college, the whole Florida thing would've been nothing. The electoral college was initially created because our founding fathers were afraid of a direct democracy. They didn't want people to have the ultimate control, so instead they set up a system where representatives vote for the people.
Let me say, by no means, am I an expert and I wouldn't dare claim to be. However, since political discussions are against the rules and since we've gone a bit off topic. If you want to discuss this further over PM, I'd be happy too.
So... it looks like AGI is going to win pretty easily. I would've guessed IaTN would've put up a closer fight.

Although if some more people who haven't voted yet would come and vote (when this thing started we had 250) it could change. Remember the poll is open until Sunday. Come on people cast a vote! (For your favorite episode that you've seen) :)

Well said, Failure. I was afraid my last post may have sounded a little rude, so I appreciate the thoughtful response. I, too, want to see a proper and fair result for every poll. I haven't been visiting the Delaney poll, but of course I underatand what you're saying. I guess what it comes down to for me is that I don't think that a few random votes will hurt the overall outcome and the poll needs the participation. Rimma's vote is probably very harmless. And on those points it looks like we agree.
I also think that Maxie had a good point about not shouting out the fact if your just taking a shot in the dark w/your vote.

I'm not interested in getting into a political discussion either, nor was I a poly-sci major, I was only pointing to the fact that the electoral college vote for each state is still determined by the number of popular votes within that state. (I know that legally the state's representatives have the power to cast their vote in opposition to the pop. count, but that is a whole other discussion.)
Thanks again for the very intelligent response/debate.

Well, after days of trying to make up my mind, I've finally reached a decision, and my choice was....I am the Night. This had to be one of the best B:TAS episodes of all time! I'm also surprised, Game.......I thought "I am the Night" would win for sure.

Actually, I am a little disappointed that "Almost Got Im" is in the lead. I was hoping that the more character and art driven episodes would be the ones that made it to the lead - stories like "Two-Face" for example. Then again, this was probably the first poll where a more entertaining episode won, so I can't really complain. I do hope though, that "Catwalk" and "Second Chance" make it far - They were both amazing episodes. Are they together on the same polls? I hope not!

Well, voting is up a bit from last week, and I'd like to thank everyone who stuck mentions of the poll in their signatures and various posts they put up! Remember, if you keep doing this to change the URL when the new poll goes up. Thanks alot - I think that contributed to a better turnout this week. And with about 4 or 5 hours until the poll closes, it looks like Almost Got 'Im is going to undoubtably walk away with the victory!
