Garrreeetings people. We've got a new Fresh Question to report, so gather all ye animation fans and strap on your thinking helmets. This one is pretty straight foward:
As an animation fan, who is your absolute favorite Voice-over artist of all time??

Hard question, and given my mood it tends to change now and then, but I guess I'll go with Jim Cummings. His body of work is just AMAZING I mean you've got a career that spans so many great classic new animation. I mean come on, The Shredder in TMNT, Zummi in Gummi Bears, Mayor Manx in Swat Kats, The Announcer and nearly everyone else in Animaniacs, Tiny Toons, Gargoyles and Morocco Mole in 2 Stupid Dogs, Robotnik in Sonic, and these are his throw away rolls, his real genius was pretty much all of the Disney Afternoon, and that's where I love him. Pete on Goof Troup, Don Carnage and Louie on Tale Spin, Lucky in Bonkers, Monterey Jack on Chip and Dale and the piece de resistance, Darkwing Duck/Drake Mallard/Herb Muddlefoot/Negaduck/Moliarty on Darkwing Duck, *sigh* and really that's the tip of the iceberg folks. Everyone knows Jim in Someway or another, because his voice is everywhere, of late he's doing most of the film Trailers in Hollywood, he's the Announcer for KidsWB and has even done the MTV Movie Awards. The show's he's active in now are Jackie Chan Adventures, and Catdog for Nickelodeon, and Fuzzy Lumpkins in Powerpuff Girls; not to mention an ungodly amount of Animatied Films.
Now that I think about it, it's not hard, and it's not just because of his vast amount of work, it's just one role really that got me, Darkwing Duck, and my ears are always open to catch his voice, cause he's everywhere.
....
The hard part is that I love some many other folks, Rob Paulsen, Gregg Berger, Pam Segall, Stephen Root (Jimmy James!), Charlie Adler, there's just too many and they're all great!

Suddenly, waking up this morning is that much less of a burden...
Quinton Flynn, definitely. He doesn't have the massive range, but he has talent. I've been in love with the sound of his voice for years now.

I'd say Jim Cummings, Rob Paulsen, Dan Castellaneta, Hank Azaria, Tress MacNeille, Lorenzo Music, Keith David, and Kevin Conroy. A couple of those last ones have limited range, but I love their trademark voices.

Honestly, there are too many to limit to just one. When I heard Keith David on Gargoyles and then on Spawn, I loved his work. But I also love Jim Cummings (he's the sentimental favorite) and Peter Cullen, and Kevin Conroy.
For women, I never get tired of hearing Tara Strong (or as I knew of her Charendoff). Hell, I even watched that Sabrina in Greece tv movie just because she was in it :D . And of course Tress Macneille.
For mostly anime dubs, my favorites are Ian Corlett and Scott McNeil. I love Corlett's hero voice and McNeil is a talent at different types of voices (I didn't even know he played so many characters on Beast Wars until I read it).

Mel Blanc, for the old-school Warner Bros. cartoons, and probably David Lucas, the voice of Spike Spiegel on Cowboy Bebop. Most people don't realize it, but he has a VERY large range of voices.
I think David Lucas is the best. His voce is so cool .

I never get tired of these "favorite VA" threads.
Mel Blanc (the king, baby!)
Jim Cummings
Tom Kenny
Richard Horvitz (range is somewhat limited, but what he does as Zim is amazing)
Kath Soucie (there are a couple of people here who don't think she's so great, but I, personally, worship the ground she walks on. Okay, that was a bit strong, but suffice it to say, she's terrific)
Jennifer Hale (likewise)
David Warner
Phil LaMarr (so very talented; it's hard to believe that he voices both Static Shock and Samurai Jack)
June Foray (the queen)
Petrea Burchard (has only one role - that I know of - but I can't imagine anyone else in it)
Rob Paulsen
Maurice LaMarche
Tress MacNeille
Frank Welker (what VA list is complete without him?)
Billy West
Nathan Ruegger
E.G. Daily
Tim Curry
Mark Hamill
Tara Strong
I'll be posting more in time.

Tiffany Grant (Asuka!)
Jimmy Flinders (KANEEEEDDDAAA!!)
Crispin Freeman (Touga!)

Maggie O'Hara (Kitty!)
Tim Curry (too many to name)
...and plenty of others I can't think of.

I should probably give some credit to female VAs, but to be honest, there aren't a lot I like. Tara Strong (Charendoff?) stands out in my mind--very talented and never, ever annoying. Most are 'eh' to me, and only one (Jennifer Hale) actually causes me physical pain to hear.
That, and it's easier for me to get attached to a guy's voice. Odd.

Drat and doubledrat. I wanted to field this one.
Frank is clearly one of the more prolific vocalists alive. His Dr. Claw voice alone is worth the price of admission. [Welker, I mean.] Besides, all of those animals, robots, evil villains...even being a cast member of Scooby hasn't tainted him.
Peter[Cullen] is best known as Optimus Prime or other big bruisers(I loved his stint as Bludgeon on Savage Dragon), but you'd never suspect he was that scrawny cat sidekick of Fat Cat's on C&D's Rescue Rangers. Never.
Jim's another prolific voice, with nice range. [Yep, I mean Cummings.] Here's a guy who one minute is Winnie the Pooh, and the next minute tormenting innocent woodland creatures on an alien planet.
Having said that, let's consider Jaleel White. Most of you may not know him for any animated role, but not a day goes by...when I think of chili dogs, I hear his voice. And it's not asking about cheese, polka, or Laura Winslow. ;)
Finally, Charlie Adler. From tough pilot cat to snooty waiter; from puny roosters to giant girl cows, he has it all.
However, they are but a small sampling. Every actor has his/her strengths. And I note I listed all males here.
Anime dubs?
Paul Dobson, Scott McNeil, Brian Drummond, Derek Stephen Prince, Chris Sabat, Matt Hill, Lenore Zann, the artist who voiced Kail--Richard Newman[?](Kale/Cale, warlord of corruption, demon of darkness....), and Saffron Henderson.
Dobson: His Anubis is excellent. You can tell he hams it up in every show he voices. And that's not a bad thing if done well. Plus, he did a number on Adult Enzo. Piccolo #2.
McNeil: Rattrap. Dinobot. Ocean Group's answer to Frank Welker. His Duo is the cutest. Piccolo #1.
Drummond: Zechs is serious and focused. Vegeta A: young, evil, and sinister.
Prince: It was easy to spot that he had fun with Ken Ichijouji's Digimon Emperor mode. Impmon's a riot, too. I have to give him the Mel Blanc award for handling both Kens, Veemon, and Demiveemon(so CUTE!), while attempting chibi Ken.(sadly, that part fell flat.)
Sabat: Piccolo #3. Vegeta B(once Sabat honed his idea of the character away from Drummond impersonation) comes off as the bitter yet more mature Vegeta, who has learned to love.
Hill: He was and is Ryo of the Wildfire. So it surprised me that he could handle Ed. [I don't mean the wacky redhead kid on CB]
Zann: She did a great Aisha, but my real meeting with her voice was as X-Men's(FOX) Rogue.
[insert name of Tuberov/Kail's vocalist(Newman?)]: Tuberov came off precisely as a jerk obsessed with the rightness of his own ideas. But his best performance was as Kail. Sometimes he could be menacing, other times noble, at moments petty, and even a touch of psychotic. [He alone makes buying the RW DVD a good purchase, but with Hill, Dobson and the other actors on that show...YST's silly, edited dub is a masterpiece.]
Henderson: Her Tetsuro is good, but her boy Gohan is the best ever. Especially in Dead Zone.
==
It's so hard to choose the "best" vocalist, because one actor CANNOT carry an entire show. (unless you're Mel Blanc, in which case, you'd be--sadly--dead.) It takes at least two vocalists(citing the Dastardly and Muttley Show) to make a series work, especially nowadays. And it's even harder for American series, because the actors rarely come together to act out parts.
No...you need to hear all of the voices together to make the show work. And you know when the show works, people: because for the next few moments of your life, you're not watching fast-moving pics of a cartoon rabbit simulating motion and speech by having the mouth movements dubbed in sync with an actor's voice. You're watching the trials of Buster Bunny begging the Silly Rabbit to quit stalking the kids in Trix commercials.
IOW--I like many voice actors. Unless you're so bad that Central Park Media won't put your name on the film(Chojin Locke OVA burn, anyone? It was entitled "Space Warriors"), you've earned my respect. [although with shows nowadays...bleh.]

Lonestarr, I totally agree with you on Richard Horvitz, the stuff he does as Zim is AMAZING. I was also shocked no one else mentioned Gregg Berger, his voice is so smooth, and well check out his demo, I'm telling you he's great to listen to.
http://www.cedvoices.com/audiofiles/Berger_Gregg_ani.rm
Actually there's plenty of folks over at cedvoice.com including Michael Bell who was probably the first person I ever thought to note when I was a kid Watch GI Joe, cause Duke was the Man!
I don't know if these Guys Fit in too much but I worship them everyday, Kevin Clash, Steve Whitmire and Bill Barretta over at Jim Henson Productions. Talk about talent, they deserve all the props they can get.
Can't believe I forgot Tom Kenny, and right now, I'm keen on Daran Norris and Susan Blakeslee (Cosmo and Wanda) from Fairly Oddparents, cause it's so funny any they're so bubbly.
And I'll remember a hundred others after this post, but Charles Napier, just strictly because of Dude's resume, I mean to go from Rambo, to Cartoons, what else do you need? It's crazy, his resume, his voice seems always the same, but man it works. Okay and David Warner is cool, and Jenifer Lien and Keith Diamond, there the whole Cast of Men In Black, cause I love everything to do with that show and it's so underrated. Might as well Plug Big Guy and Rusty here too, (go vote for John Delany to sketch BG&R on the Comics Board!!!) with Tom Hank's Brother, Jim and soft spoken Dwayne and Jonathan Teugue Cook, small resume, giagantic voice.
I noticed no one mentioned the illustrious Ms. Cavanaugh, which is odd given the success of many of her characters. I used to like her, then I didn't and now I'm kinda eh, so-so about her, but I dig Dexter's accent to no end, so I'll give her props there. Anyone else iffy on Christine Cavanaugh?
I think I got everyone this time. If not, I won't post anymore anyhow...way too many talented folks out there.

Anubis!!!
Chili Dogs!!!
I thought about this the other night when podering purchasing a new Hedgie. (My other one died, *sniff*) Thanks to Nintendo's Marketing Blitz.....
Likewise on the Animes, the only one I would add would be Bo Williams who hasn't done much but rocks the English Dub of Trigun as Wolfwood. Hope to hear him more soon.
I'm done for now I think.

Definitely Kevin Conroy. Also Cathy Weseluck (Cybersix) and whoever does Sedusa's voice...if it were less shrill, it'd be my ideal voice. Oh and the actress who formerly played Kes on Voyager who did the voice for Elle in MiB: TAS.

Mel Blanc, without a doubt! I like Rob Paulsen, Tress Macneille, Jess Harnell, Matt Hill, Tony Sampson, Samuel Vincent, Maurice LaMarche, Jim Cummings, Frank Welker, Don Messick, June Foray, Peter Kelamis, Beau Billingslea, David Lucas, and Wendee Lee.

My recent fav is Phil LaMarr. He isnt a voice-over expert, but I like him.
1)Invader Zim- he played the baby Schnooky (god, that was hilarious)
2)Metal Gear 2- he played Vamp. I think he really did the role justice, seing as he gave him that creepy feel to it.
3)Samurai Jack-plays Jack. nuff said
4)Grim & Evil- Plays Hector ConCarne. the only reason I watch that show. :D
I also liked him in MadTV, even though he didnt do much voice-acting (other than those clay animated shorts). hehe. he also got his head blown off by John Travolta in Pulp Fiction :p

Nightflower - That was Jennifer Hale as Sedusa; doesn't anyone like her besides me?
nerium - I'm surprised that I failed to mention Gregg Berger. His work on "Duckman" (Cornfed) and "Aaaah! Real Monsters" (The Gromble) is wonderful.
Other favorites:
Charlie Adler (shame on me for not mentioning him earlier)
Howard Morris (ditto)
Meghan Black
Don Messick
Keith David
Scott McNeil
Tracy Grandstaff
Charles Napier
Dan Castellaneta
Jennifer Martin
Edie McClurg
John Kricfalusi (to me - and others, I hope - he is Ren Hoek)

Gregg is most decidedly the man, don't forget Orson from Garfeld, and Kay from MIB. Thusly he rules, and I dig the whole, Dragnet, Just the facts flatness that he can put out.
On the otherhand Charlie does frantic neuroticism like no one's business, which is why I loved him as Ickis.
Here's a really obscure show for you all, Steve Mackall, as Hyperman in The Adventure of Hyperman. Ran Saturdays on CBS I think, maybe a whole season if that much, and it was one of those Educational games turned TV shows. I loved it, I was in high school at the time, and it was one of the Funniest shows I recall.
How can you not like Dan C. after Earthworm Jim? Likewise Jeff Bennett who did Peter Puppy on EWJ, but is best know for Johnny Bravo. Jeff has got this massive list of credits. but I can't nail his voice, he's done nearly everything on Cartoon Network, he did Gargoyles, Animaniacs, loads of Disney and Nickelodeon stuff, but I can't ever recognize his voice, he's got some range, I mean Peter sounds about as far from Johnny Bravo and Johnny's no where NEAR Baloney on Animaniacs. I never know if Jeff's in a show unless I catch him in the credits.
Speaking of hard to nail voices, does anyone else have trouble picking out the folks with large ranges? If so who?

The cast from the Battle Of The Planets cartoon did a brilliant job...
Keye Luke (deceased) who was the number one son in early charlie chan as well
Casey Kasem- Mark from BotP - my hero.
Let's not forget Alan Oppenheimer from He-Man as the fantastic Skeletor (as well as Skeletor/Duncan/Man-at-Arms/Beast Man/Mer-Man/Spikor/Galen Nycroft/Modulok/Battle Cat/Fakor), John Ewin as the excellent He-Man (as well as Ram-Man/Faker/Man-E-Faces/Zodac/Webstor/Oracle of the Crystal Sea/Granamyr/Tullamore ) and the late Linda Gary as Teela (Evil-Lyn/Queen Marlena/Sorceress),
These are memorable voices from my past - they may not be the best to you, but they are to me!

As an animation fan, who is your absolute favorite Voice-over artist of all time??
I happen to like Wendee Lee,Sandy Fox and David Lucas I love his voice.
Ruffian
03-08-2002, 05:24 AM
I like Jennifer Hale. I thought she did a good job with Felicia Hardy/Black Cat, and not too bad as Jesse Bannon. Rob Paulson is a favorite of mine. He's very versatile, voicing for Yakko, Pinky, and Dr. Scratchinsniff, as well as Mighty Max, the Mask, and Hadji I believe. Jess Harnell and Tress Macneille are also great. I also love the voice of Jodi Benson, the voice of Ariel the Little Mermaid. She's got a nice voice.
Old School toons, well of course I'll be rooting for the He-Man/She-Ra cast. It was a small cast and each member would take on the job of doing more than one voice. They did a great job for the most part trying to give characters a distinctive sound from other voices. The cast includes Erik Gunden (aka. Lou Scheimer), Erika Scheimer, John Erwin, Alan Oppenheimer, Linda Gary, Melendy Britt, and George Dicenzo.
Oh yeah, and Kevin Conroy did a great Batman and Tim Daly for Superman.

Jim Cummings

Kevin Conroy is an obvious one. Jim Cummings is absolutely amazing, I mean, he should be in a category all on his own. Although there are certain dubs and voice over actors who do dubs that I'm not fond of....McNeil was awesome as Duo, it was so great. The guy who did Anubis was pretty awesome too. For the Anime fans, whose you're fav seiyuu?

As a traditionlist, I'll mention the pre-1970s ones.(in rec.arts.animation there is a similiar thread, as in alt.tv.cartoon-network)
Daws Butler, Mel Blanc, and the usual list but my faovirte is the boomer-era and theatrical era (largely) uncredited lesser knowns, Like Rober C.Bruce (Narrator on many Warners cartoons and occasional onscreen voice), Norman Nesbitt (the narrator and voice of PAUL BUNYAN on Chuck Jones's 1954 3D cartoon LUMBER JACK RABBIT), Sara Berner, Janet Waldo, Shepard Menken and Howard Morris, and going to the real lesser knowns, Dick Nelson, the ACTUAL voice of Tex Avery's George and Junior (wrongly credited, respectively, to fellow 1930s-40s actor Frank Graham, who died in 1950, and to Tex himself), Wally Maher (the mysery voice of Screwy Squirell and possibly some other Warners and MGM's-Dick Nelson was the voic eof as lot of the dumb dog,s if not all, iN TGex and other cartoons often ID'd as Tex's, though Tex did gguest star in others>)
By the way, spekaing of whcih, let's set the record straight on classic theatrical (in John Kricfalusi's words-JK, of course was a voice actor himself on the original Ren and Stimpy) voices.
In many cartoons, such as the 1948 entries "What Makes Daffy Duck" (Directed by Arthur Davis) and "A Ham in a Role" (With the Goofy Gophers, and that dog who chases them, directed by Bob McKimson), that's not Mel Blanc gurgling but Dave Barry. Not the humor columnist whom you may have read about and whose hiularious bnooks are in stores but a deceased Las Vegas comic, whose trademark was a dead on Humphrey Bogart impression (in addition to those effects.) Siuch experts as Mark Evanier, Hames Ware, keith Scott and oithers are responsible for seeting record straight. Speaking of which, and of TEx Avery, that Friz Spider in 1944's MEATLESS FLYDAY is radio actor Cy Kendall, not TEx as has been mentioned. Dave Weber alias Danny Webb did the voice of Egghead in many shorts. John Smith did voices like the sarge in Chuck Jones's "Forward March Hare".
Spaking of rabbits, Disney's BilL Thompson and Jerry Collona in ALICE IN WONDFERLAND (PLEASE, Mister Eisner, NO SEQUEL to THIS,even though Lewis Carroll did write eseveral stores about ALICE), are exclennt, as WHITE RABBIT & MARCH HARE,respectively. And, Sterling Holloway, of course, as the Cheshire cat and so many other Disney voices is one of the best one-film-at-a-time voice actors (Pooh,Kaa in JUNGLE BOOKm as later examples)>Verna Felton was the most recognizable Disney female equivlane,t as she also had just one voice.
Bea Benderet, the voice of Betty Rubble and virtually all fmeales at WB and MGM(?) in the 40s and 50s I enjoyed., And we can';t forget the east coast POPEYE voices..Jack Mercer, Mae Questel and Jackson Beck.
For current ones, I'll mention the Pixar celebs and noncelebs (mary Gibbs, as Boo, in MONSTERS INC.included).. I also enjoy ther voices in BEAVIS AND BUTTHEAD, and DARIA usually Mike Judge and Tracy Grandstaff (whose DARIA voice is similiar to Janeane Garofalo.)
Actually, hard to pick out (I;'m more leaving twoard pre1970s actors whose heyday was before 1970, excepot for the last severla. And of course Spumco's Ren and Stimpy voices, John K>as Ren and Billy Est as Stimpy.Maybe out of humility, but John K.billed Billy West above him when J.K. was doing the voices..alphabettically, and in order of importance John K. should have been billed (for REN) above Billy West (as STIMPY) in the show credits.
I also loved the voices used on the 1960s Total Tv series., Total TV was the studio that made KING LEONARDO through GO GO GOPHERS. Allan Swift, Norma MacMillan, Don Adams, Kenny Delmar and George S.Irving.
well, Mel, of course, but, June was doing voice overs as recently as three years ago on the Tweety Mystery Show...That gives her about the same length of career as Mel, close to 60 years since she worked in the 40s as Tweety's grandma keeper in the early Tweety's. And,, of course, she was Rocky, in Rocky and Bulwinkle....All of this has been said, but she had a great career, she also worked in either the Flinstones, or Jetsons, not sure, but she was great, and needs to be mentioned with the greatest....Stuart

She passed away from cancer. From what I've heard from the he-man.org boards, she died of brain cancer. There has never been any dispute of what she died of. Very sad. I'm gonna be thinking of her a lot I know when the new He-Man series starts. Watching Teela, Evil Lyn, The Sorceress, and Queen Marlena won't be the same with out Linda Gary.
Well, obviously I'm gonna list John Erwin and Alan Oppenheimer. Frank Welker and Peter Cullen. And Keith David and Kevin Conroy.

Gee, that's a toughie.
Here are some good ones that make my altime fav. list:
Pamela Segal Adlon. She has one of THE BEST boy voices in the biz. Just thinking of her voices, Lucky (101 Dalmations: TAS), Otto Osworth (Time Squad) and the cream of the crop, Bobby Hill (King of the Hill), I get goosebumps.
Tara Strong. Another "Strong" voice actress with a hard-hitting boy voice which makes Timmy Turner, Timmy McNulty, or, if you watched "All Growed Up", Dil Pickles stunning. Dil's baby voice is also neat. Even Bubbles and Spot have cool voices.
Hank Azaria. He plays Moe and Apu on "The Simpsons", which makes him cool.
Nancy Cartright. Bart rules.
Tom Kenny. Spongebob Squarepants...
Paul Winchell. A superior voice actor, known for voiceing Tigger and Dick Dasterdly.
April Winchell. Looks like voice talent runs in the Winchell family!
I have more coming!

--Alyson Court. Well, no one else has mentioned her. You might know her best as Jubilee on X-Men[/i and as Lydia Deetz in [i]Beetlejuice. I love her innocent voice quality and have cast her in two FanFics. She's only about a year older than me, and--interestingly enough--she's Canadian. A little something for the TZ Maple Leafers like Jim and Nightflower to revel in....

I had never thought of Paul Winchel as a voice over artist. Haven't heard him mentioned in years....He did a Kids TV show in the 50s..He was very good as Tigger. I also forgot to mention, Mark Hemmil, a far cry from Luke, He did a great job as the Joker. Stuart.
