According to ANN, this seems to be the case. That while the NYAF was going on there was another convention as well. The Sogen Con. From it, it seems that ADV Films has scored the rights to the Clannad Anime. Here's more.

The North American anime distributor ADV Films (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/company.php?id=2) reportedly revealed at Sogen Con 2008 in South Dakota this weekend that it acquired an anime project based on Visual Art's/Key (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/company.php?id=1210)'s Clannad visual novel franchise (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/lexicon.php?id=70). There is no confirmation on whether the reported license is for the 2007 animated film, the 2007 animated television series, or this October's Clannad After Story (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=9701) television series. ADV Films spokesperson Chris Oarr (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=57795) declined to confirm or deny the report.

It seems kinda odd that ADV would announce a big title like Clannad at a small con. I think it's very possible that they could have the liscense, though.

Either way. It'd be interesting to see where they put it. Speaking network wise. Like they could opt for another Toonami Jetstream run or even their own TV network; Anime Network.

Heh, I really, really can't see Clannad getting a Toonami Jetstream run-- it's not an action show and isn't really Toonami material. But getting it on TAN On Demand seems like the way to go.

This is the company that licensed Air and Kanon, so I'm not surprised if it's true.

It would probably stream on Anime Network. Jetstream--not a chance. That show is about as far away from action as you get.

Personally I very quickly lost interest after a cursory look, but I guess really dedicated fans of the genre will be happy. To me Kanon seemed far superior in terms of having characters that were actually likable.

Unfortunately for ADV, the American H-game fanbase is rife with the kind of people who pitch fits over every little thing a licensor does...

That's OK. FUNimation will "license rescue" the title in a year or so. ;)

and they'll piss off fans by releasing it with crappy video and crappy packaging ;)

Hey, I like their packaging and presentation.

Yeah, they also had really good designs for the DVD packaging. Like with GetBackers, the countless sets of Neon Genesis Evangelion [speaking of this, hope that FUNimation rescues You [Are] Not Alone 1.0] etc...

Well, Kanon is slightly superior to Clannad, in my opinion, though they're both among my all-time favourites. Oh, and Fuko is also my all-time favourite character, even though she's pretty much just a crossover between Makoto and Ayu. I'd say you should give it a try. About the only real complaint I have about it is that it might be a bit too similar to Kanon.

Anyway, yay! I've been hoping for Clannad to get licensed at every single con that's been since the last episode aired. (I convieniently got into the show just after episode 22 aired.)

Well, it seems that ADV's Matt Greenfield has now confirmed that this game has indeed been licensed by them.

Game or anime?

I assume you mean "this anime has indeed been licensed by them", as seriously, I don't see the visual novel ever getting licensed, seeing how games without any actual gameplay are pretty much non-existent outside of Japan.

Well, Matt Greenfield (as I understand ANN's article) didn't really go into specifics. He just said that they licensed the series.

I'm assuming for both of it's seasons.

Er, it's probably just the first season. The second season hasn't even aired yet.

River26

Well, technically when the licensor says "series". This includes past and also future series.

Because even Bandai Entertainment got a hold of the 2nd season of Code Geass. Code Geass R2 as well.

Code Geass is liscensed by Bandai Visual in Japan. Bandai Entertainment having a liscense that extends to cover that second series isn't suprising. ADV has no such partnership of that sort, so I wouldn't be so sure about them having After Story too...

Good to know ADV is still picking up new titles. For a while, it looked like they would end up shutting down. They're probably not out of the woods quite yet; but at least they're still getting work.

I've never heard of Clannad. Is that show anything to get excited about?

Not sure what you mean. Elaborate?
I think he was referring to the fact that most H-game fanboys tend to be rabid Japanophiles. So, naturally, they're hyper-critical of the American companies who touch the anime based on their precious digital girlfriends. :p

More or less.

I do have to correct myself though; Clannad was never an H-game, even though Kanon and Air (by the same company) were.

I personally enjoyed Clannad more. Kanon got a bit too mystical for my tastes in the end there, plus Sunohara's hilarious!

Uhhh...FUNimation (who everyone else was talking about when it comes to packaging) doesn't have GetBackers or Evangelion... or Evangelion 1.0. Also, how can FUNimation "rescue" something that's NOT been confirmed licensed by anyone? How can they "rescue it"?

Also -- reality check -- Clannad on Jetstream? No, just no.

Anyways, good news I'll buy it when it comes out.

Zero, it's already been confirmed by ADV's Matt Greenfield with this past Sogen Convention. There's no more need to ask "if this is true".
