As was stated in MOTP, Alfred says:

"Vengeance blackens the soul, Bruce. I've always feared that you would become that which you fought against. You walk the edge of that abyss every night, but you haven't fallen in and I thank heaven for that."

So, do you think that if a someone does something out of proportions, that is a threat to someone, do you think Bats will ever go over the edge? Do you think Bats will be so full of rage that he just goes all out? As some of us have seen, in the ROTJ Uncut Version, Joker does something that gets Bats more pissed off than ever before...

Joker takes Tim, than tortures him by electrocuting him to get Batman's and his families secret identiies. And worst of all, he brainwashed Tim into almost killing Bruce and made Tim his own "son".

So, is Batman the ideal hero, a hero that will never cross the line, or do you think Bruce will lose control over himself, and do something that he will regret his whole life?

the batman is ALL ABOUT control-- in his mind his lack of control over the situation in which his parents get killed is the reason they died

i think hed quit being batman if he ever went over the edge

The defining moment in Batman's life was the night his parents were murdered by some faceless punk. That's what caused him to devote his life to fighting crime, every time he catches a bad guy Batman is stopping him from doing to someone else what was done to him.

If Bats lost it and killed someone then everything he had worked his whole life for would be one big hypocritical sham.

Does Bruce want to kill someone like the Joker sometimes? Of course, he is only human. But not giving into that temptation is what makes him a hero.

In the end, I think you are right. To prove this, all we have to do is look at the first episode of batman beyond. Bruce is about to be defeated by a badguy, and he picks up a gun. While he has used guns before, they were always against things like missles and vehicles and the like. He never shot "to kill" as it were.

When Bruce looses control, and nearly kills the thug. That is the reason he gives up, and says never again.

And leaves Gotham City Defenseless until Terry Comes along...

The Bat can't lose control, but Bruce Wayne could... Take that for what it's worth

I think that it's the opposite: he'd go over the edge if he ever quit being Batman. Many writers have grasped that he's Batman because he can be no one else. As long as Batman and his mindset gives Bruce's life meaning, he'll be sane (or at least functionally neurotic).

I would normally try to write a supporting paragraph to what you said, but since I could never put it as perfectly as that, allow me to say: My thoughts exactly. :)

Agreed. In Batman's case, it really is Batman that is the real person, with Bruce just being a facade.
