If the current "Opus" storyline is to be believed, Berke is about to throw in the pencil for the third time in 28 years. But it's been kept surprisingly quiet this time. Is there any official word on when the last strip will be? 'Cause I'd like to know how much longer there is left (as well as his reasons for quitting this time - he always says that he returns 'cause he loves cartooning so much, so why bother even quitting in the first place?).

The end of Opus could be sometime this Fall or in January 2009.

Do you have a source on this, or are you just speculating?

Lets just hope we get to see portnoy and hodge podge before the strip ends, heck, i wouldnt mind a spinoff strip focusing on them.

They haven't been seen since Bloom County ended. In fact, the last panel of yesterday's cartoon was the first time I've ever seen a talking animal other than Opus in the strip.

Yeesh.

According to the September 28, 2008 Opus strip, it should continue into October since it hasn't met its end as of this week.

Update: Opus is ceasing on November 2, 2008, but my local paper the Chicago Tribune dropped it from the Sunday comics recently in favor of Sunday strips Pickles and Tundra.

Hmm, I thought for sure he would drop it on November 23, five years to the day after it started - seems like it would have been a nice way to bring the strip full-circle.

The official announcement hit today on CNN that the last strip would be Nov. 2nd.
