So if I get this correctly, the version of Subzero coming out in April on DVD is 1.33:1 (i.e. normal TV aspect). If that's correct, that bites. The laserdisc is in Widescreen (1.66:1). I hope that it has the WS at least on one side, and the Pan & Scan on the others (as are with most DVDs that had both formats).

Welcome surfinma! Be sure you pick your favorite BTAS episode in this week's poll! :)

My understanding is that the movie was made with the normal aspects and the picture was matted for the Laser Disk, so you were really missing the intended picture. The DVD is not pan and scan, it is the original version.

The SUB-ZERO DVD is indeed in full frame, as it was originally intended. If you read the back cover art, it says that the aspect ratio is it's original size. The 1.66:1 size of the laserdisc is the matte version of the movie.

I have a question- what is "matted" widscreen? I got Mask of the Phantasm on DVD today, and after hearing it was 'fake' widescreen, I tried to see the difference, but couldn't. What is this widscreen?

Thanks ... I just got used to the WS version and it'll be weird not to see it that way LOL

"matted"-they basically put Black bars over the tops and bottoms of the screen to make it look widescreen, when really it's cutting off stuff (IE: batman's ears and boots)

It's nothing major, but, hey..some of the animation is missing.. hehe

Just to clarify, yeah matting is placing the black bars, but if the program was shot or animated in true widescreen, then nothing is being cut off. If it shot or animated 1.33:1(4x3) and then matted, then picture is being cropped. Whenever something is cropped, in this manner, it is usually the wishes of the creators(i.e. Justice League, Mask of the Phantasm, SubZero).

Mask of the Phantasm probably would originally be in widescreen because it was first in theaters. JL would just be widescreen if Timm & co. had their way, it's only matted because CN demanded full-screen. But that doesn't have much to do with Sub-Zero. :)

Oh- so they just cut off the top and bottom, the way they cut off the sides to make full screen from widescreen?

Cool. Personally, I just think widescreen looks cooler, I don't care about "the way it was meant to be seen" so I wish Sub-Zero was widescreen. Oh well.

Wow, is that really what they do to JL? I've never seen a "widescreen" episode, I never thought I'd say I like the pan & scan version better. :D
