English Dubs that Time Forgot

Has anyone seen this? It was something that was done by Mike O'Toole of Anime Jump fame at this year's Otakon. Anime News Network uploaded the panel on their video section and there are some exclusive clips not seen at the Otakon panel due to time reasons.

I thought this a very informative and funny panel. I didn't realize there were some English dubs produced certain anime shows from the 60's and 70's. I liked the Amazing Three and the British dub for Urusei Yatsura. Too bad the lady who had the negatives to the Amazing Three threw it away in a landfill in New Jersey.

With the insurgent popularity of Tatsunoko's '70's "superhero" series (Gatchaman, Cassern, Polymar, Tekkaman, Time Bokan/Yatterman) due to "Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom", I'd like to bring attention to the obscure, incomplete 1984-1985 English dub of "Space Knight Tekkaman":

An English language version was created by a small independent company called William Winckler Productions. However, the dub was cancelled in mid-story with only 13 of the show's 26 episodes produced.[4] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tekkaman:_The_Space_Knight#cite_note-3)
Over forty-thousand original Tekkaman the Space Knight VHS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VHS) video cassettes were successfully sold throughout the U.S. to major retail stores by Congress Video Group (the largest video distributor at the time), and later by L.D. Video. Congress Video sold half-hour episodes, whereas L.D. Video sold two 96-minute movie compilations.
William Winckler attempted to stay as true to the original Japanese series as possible, with little editing of violence as possible, and retaining all the original Japanese music and sound effects. This was in stark contrast to Science Ninja Team Gatchaman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Science_Ninja_Team_Gatchaman), another Tatsunoko series which was dubbed by Sandy Frank (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandy_Frank) as Battle of the Planets (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_the_Planets).

I've never seen a clip of this long-lost dub, but someone must have a VHS of it somewhere. Sifting through ancient usenet posts, I've read that they were being sold in retail video stores up until the early '90's, and that the dub was quite horrendous.

The English Singaporean Dubs of anime.

Although they aren't as forgotten as never heard of, they have gained some atention in the past few years (No problem, myself :D)

There's also the Toei dubbed version of Mazinger Z. It was actually unedited unlike Tranzor Z.

I've seen the British dub of Urusei Yatsura and it was quite funny in a distinctly British-type of way. There were so many ad-libs though, it was only worth watching for a few episodes.

I once came across a VHS tape of the Tekkaman dub that AceGoodheart is describing in a thriftstore many years ago, but for some reason didn't pick it up.:sad:

Great panel, though the video's host berating everyone at the beginning was a little weird.

What a story about those masters. Tragic. That's the kind of thing that is almost impossible in the digital age, so today it just seems strange that anything could truly be lost forever.

At one of Mike Toole's future panels, he should show the 1978 dub of Lupin III where everyone but Lupin is given a different name.:D

Was it a dubbed version done in the Philippines? Because there was a English dub of Grendizer made in the Philippines besides the one made by Jim Terry along with Getter Robot and Danguard Ace.

First English dub of GITS 2: Innocence done for the Manga Video release of the movie in R2 because of Dreamworks spitting all the fans in the faces and their horrible release of Innocence on DVD.

Bandai had the dub re-recorded for the new R1 release.
