I'm a bit curious about the show.
Before the introduction of the Smurflings and Grandpa Smurf, am I the only person who found it strange that Smurfette was the ONLY female smurf among a group of a 100 smurfs? There was one smurfling who was female.
Why were Johann and Pee-wee the ONLY humans who helped the Smurfs?

1. Smurfette was the only female because she wasn't a natural born Smurf to begin with. She was a creation of Gargamel's to be a spy, but when then freed from his control with the help of Papa Smurf.
2. Because Johann and Pee-Wee were actually stars of a comic strip. A comic strip which was I believe where the Smurfs were introduced to begin with.

YEah-but don't you still find it strange there were NO female smurfs until Smurfette showed up? How could Papa Smurf be all the other Smurfs' father? Where's Mama Smurf?

"Johan & Pee-Wee"? So, that's what "Johan & Pirlouit" was called in English.
Anyway, you're absolutely correct, The Smurfs were introduced in one episode of Peyo's first comic, "Johan & Pirlouit", in the album "La Flūte į 6 Schtroumpfs". To be honest, I always prefered the "Johan & Pirlouit" comics to the "Smurf" comics, especially the earlier ones when the setting was a fairly realistic mediaval setting where one of the main focuses was the on-going struggle for power between the king and various noblemen.

Johann and Pee-Wee were also called Johann and Pewitt.

It's actually Pewit. Some Americans who aren't familiar with the pewit (which is a small Old World gull named for its' imitative cry) mistake the character's name for Pee-Wee.

There was a 'Nanny Smurf' introduced in the eight season as a counterpart to Grandpa Smurf, but odds are she was a product of a wizard's sorcery as well. But yeah, the stork thing was established when Baby Smurf arrived.

When did the cartoon take place? Wasn't it a bit anachronistic also? I recall there was a character called Astrosmurf.
Painter Smurf used 20th-century style easels.
Didn't the Smurfs ride bikes?

The show took place in pseudo medieval times.
Painter Smurf used 20th-century style easels. You're point? It's a cartoon. It doesn't have to be historically accurate. It took place in a time in history that never really existed anyway.
Didn't the Smurfs ride bikes?No.

No.
Yes I vaguely remember Nanny Smurf. Was Grandpa Smurf Papa Smurf's dad?

I don't know if it was ever brought up, especially since Cartoon Network/Boomerang refuses to run Grandpa Smurf's debut episode, along with Seasons 8 and 9 and various episodes through the other seasons.

Was it contraversial?
For some reason I want to think Papa Smurf made all the other male smurfs.

When Papa Smurf introduces him to the rest of the Smurfs, he says: "He is my Papa Smurf".

WHy did they refuse to run it?
WHy did they refuse to run it?I honestly don't know. They may not have the episode among their library, or they refuse to show it because it's rather "dark" (The Smurfs being at the edge of dying near the end of the episode).

Yeah, it not being in the library of episodes they have to run is the most likely reason. CN/Boomerang only seems to have the syndicated package, although it looks like they've let Boom have some of the later non syndicated eps since they've running select S7 episodes.
If WB releases them fast enough, we should have the entire series released within the next decade, although personally I think I'll stop at S8 since that final season went far and above the level of suck.

What was the name of that kid who helped Gargamel in the later episodes?
What was the name of that kid who helped Gargamel in the later episodes? That would be Scruple. He was created solely for the TV series, as he was never in the comics.

It's actually Pewit.It's actually Peewit.
Did Johan, Pewit and Gargamel ever meet?Never in the comics. There was an episode that had Peewit and Gargamel in it (the one with Baby's first word), but I don't recall any others. There might have been, but usually the Johan and Peewit stories were complete standalones in regards to the Gargamel stories.

I could have swore there was an episode where Peewit and Scruple met.
I really wish Boomerang would air the ENTIRE series. It'd be nice to see the lost episodes before they hit DVD.

I can confirm, there was one episode where Peewit and Scruple met (and a rare episode who feature Scruple without Gargamel), if I remember correctly, it was aired during the 1987-88 season

I've been wondering this for quite a while: was Princess Sabina (the King's niece in the "Johan & Peewit" segments in Season 2) an original character created for the show, or was she in the J&P strip, too?

Princess Sabina did a cameo appearance in the J&P strip in the #3 issue album "Le lutin du bois des roches", however Princess Sabina got a different look http://www.dupuis.com/servlet/jpecat?pgm=DETAIL_COUV&lang=FR&NART=1100970
it was also Peewit first appearance as well, the 1st albums, Johan was a sole character and with the popularity of Peewit. Peyo decided to do a main character who'll be Johan's sidekick.

I'm surprised noone's mentioned Sassette, the young redhead. She was one of the Smurflings who joined the series in the later seasons.

That's because everyone wants to FORGET the Smurflings. Once they showed up, virtually EVERY episode started centering around them.

Did Johan, Pewit and Gargamel ever meet?
Yes, there was an episode. Some Smurfs on a balloon got kidnapped by Gargamel's evil-and-more-serious uncle (name I can't recall). This uncle blackmails Papa Smurf into becoming his assistant. He also summons Gargamel and his "smurfs=gold" alchemy research. Fortunately, Smurfette gets Johan and Peewit. They break into the castle and 'persuade' the evil uncle to let the Smurfs go.

But didn't the nature-loving Smurfling make some earlier appearances as an adult?
Silverstar

That would be Natural, aka 'Nat' Smurf, and yes, he did.
The story of the Smurflings' origins was something like Papa Smurf, Nat and 2 other previously unseen Smurfs (Snappy and Slouchy) were visiting Father Time, who was an old friend of Papa's. The 3 Smurfs fall into Father Time's magic grandfather clock or something, which de-ages them into children. Both Papa and Father Time tell them that the spell can't be reversed, and the 3 Smurfs must simply return to adulthood the old-fashioned way. Sassette, the only girl Smurfling, was created later by the boys to be a female companion for Smurfette.
