Grimace, the Noid, a racial caricature that promoted marmalade for an astoundingly long time... they're all here.

I'm surprised that they didn't mention the other characters in the McDonald's franchise. What happened to Birdie, the Mayor, and especially the Hamburglar.

The Noid I remember pretty well because of the game and toys, but Spot from 7up comes to mind as well.

I couldn't believe the Marlboro man was up there. I figured Joe Camel would be in that spot because of the whole "him being a cartoon character and kids would think smoking is cool" debacle.

The Burger King, last time I saw him was him getting kicked in the shin by his son. Must have been a message saying "Now go away."

According to Mobile Today, Carphone Wharehouse tried to ditch Mowbli three times since the beginning of this year as the character is no longer relevant given the retailer’s moves into laptops and broadband.
What, did Mowbli keep showing up at the office even after you docked his pay? Did he start calling you at all hours of the night? How do you fail to get rid of your own computer-generated mascot?

I never liked the Noid. If they were going to go with any pizza chain mascot, I'd prefer it be Pizza Head and Steve.

And what about the Dunkin' Donuts Guy? Or the "Where's the Beef?" Lady? I think they should have disqualified mascots who were retired but then came back. That would have freed up several slots on this list.

As I recall, at least for the Mayor McCheese was discontinued because the Kroft Bros. sued McDonald's because that character looked too much like the mayor in H.R. H.R. Pufnstuf.

Or the "Where's the Beef?" Lady?

She died.

Of course, considering she was about 83 when she started making those commercials, I don't think anyone expected her to have a long shelf life.

I only remember about half of these mascots, and one of them -The Burger King- is no longer "retired" but quite active, thanks for asking.

You want retired mascots? Where is the Frito Bandito? Sugar Bear? Mr. Whipple? (oh, wait, I think he died, too) The Ti-D-Bowl Man? The Jolly Green Giant and his annoying nephew, Sprout? The California Raisins? The Kool-Aid Man? Speedy, the Alka-Seltzer Boy?

I don't recognize Aunt Jemima anymore. She's had more facelifts than Joan Rivers.

And that Billy Mays guy is suddenly everywhere, shilling everything. He's like a bearded, gravel-voiced, uncute Mary Lou Retton. When he burns out, it won't be pretty.

For every mascot who gets retired, the "How many licks?" kid from the Tootsie-Pop commercial spends another year wandering the earth in search of The Answer.

Mr. Whipple (real name: Dick Wilson)? Yeah, he died. As did "Ol' Lonely" the original Maytag repairman, Jesse White.

She died.I know they died. My question was "Where are they on this list?" The mascots were technically "retired" after their respective deaths, as the companies could have simply recast the roles, but chose not to. James' answer solved that puzzle though. This is a UK-only list.

Actually, Clara Peller, the "Where's the Beef Lady," was fired by Wendy's for appearing in a spaghetti ad yelling "I found it." Then she died.

The Grimace will be back. Mark my words.

What about those "cool" Burger King kids? Remember them? What were their names anyway? I don't remember. Man, even as a kid I was like, "they're just trying too hard." lol. I always did like the McDonalds characters. I always liked when they were featured as Happy Meal toys. For some reason, I always remember during one Halloween, sometime in the early `90s I think, they gave toys of Chicken McNuggets that you could dress up in a monster costume. lol.

I remember Wheels, Boomer, IQ, Vid kid (or something similar), there was a tall indian looking kid, and a dog. They're painted all over the near by BK but since I stopped eating there I can't be sure of the names.

As for nuggets, they were my favorite hm toy. I remember one with a blonde wig and sparkley dress and the mummy one. They need more toys like that today.

They were NOT trying. They were not trying to be cool at ALL. A guy with Chuckie glasses named "IQ" and a girl with a camera named "Snaps"....it was miles away from cutting-edge.

Eventually they pared the lineup down to just Kid Vid. Him I could tolerate.

THIS IS THE BURGER KING THEY WERE REFERRING TOO

The Burger King featured in the very first outlet of the chain in 1955. Until the 80s, Burger King used a small cartoon king for its children’s adverts, showing a benevolent, magical and gift-bearing hamburger monarch. The original ads were phased out and the King hung up his crown – until 2003 when the ad company in charge of Burger King found a freakishly large, grinning mask on eBay. Since then, the Burger King has lived on in internet memes and adverts alike, popular for showing up in random and awkward places.

What about those "cool" Burger King kids? Remember them? What were their names anyway? I don't remember.

I'm embarrassed to say that I still remember them. They were:

Kid Vid
Boomer
Jaws (I wasn't thrilled that they named the black kid 'Jaws', BTW)
Snaps
I.Q.
Wheels (also not very PC, naming a wheelchair-bound kid 'Wheels')
J.B. the dog
and in the last few spots, they added a Latino kid named Lingo. (Apparently, they also at some point added an Asian girl dressed like a beatnik named Jazz, but I only ever saw her on a placemat at one of the BKs in my area; as far as I know, she never appeared in any TV ads.)

They dropped the BK Kids club in favor of some weird creatures with names like Mixmax and Thisorthat, and then after that they started the spots with the family. And it was all downhill from there...

-Anybody the 'Magic Burger King' ads from the 70's? Where the King was played by an actor, he performed magic tricks and he didn't have a giant plastic head? There were these other 'court' members like The Duke of Doubt, Sir Shake-A-Lot, The Burger Thing (a giant talking burger on a picture frame) and The Wizard of Fries (a robot who wore sneakers)? Those ads were created specifically to counter the McDonald Land ads, but they didn't last long.

I know of a series of mascots that no one remembers now. There used to be a series of Wendy's kid vid commercials with a live action girl dressed up as Wendy and her co-stars were "The Goodstuff Gang", a bunch of kid actors in animal suits. The Goodstuff Gang members all had names that consisted of some adjective followed by the word "stuff". There was a penguin kid named Cool Stuff, a rabbit kid named Light Stuff, a bear kid Over Stuff, etc. These ads aired in the early to mid 80s, I believe.

2 more:

Cookie Crisp went through an odd evolution with it's mascots. First, Cookie Cop was the good guy, and he chased after cookie crook and his sidekick dog, chip. This lasted for a long time, until cookie crook was dropped, and Cookie cop became the villain for some reason as Chip became the protagonist and stole cookies, outwitting cookie cop. Those only lasted for a short while, as cookie cop was dropped completely, and chip transformed form a short, fat dog into a tall, thin wolf, which he is today.

Apple Jacks, had, for the longest time since i was born, commercials with kids "outwitting" adults about apple jacks not tasting like apples. then, a few years ago, they switched to a jamaican cinnamon stick and an evil apple competing to see who could "flavor" the ceral. then there was one where they flavored it together, and were friends since every commercial after that.

You didn't mention Cookie Jarvis, the original Cookie Crisp mascot. Jarvis was a wizard who first appeared in ads by himself. The Cookie Crook began appearing in Cookie Jarvis' ads as the antagonist, then Jarvis was replaced with the Cookie Cop. (There was also a period in which the Cookie Cop was the antagonist, and was briefly renamed Officer Crumb.) Chip was introduced shorty after that.

The apple and cinnamon was around before that, I swear.

You may be thinking of Apple & Cinnaman, 2 bickering superheroes who shilled Apple Cinnamon Cheerios for a time. Apple was a fat dude with a 'dumb guy' voice who wore an apple suit. Cinnaman was tall and thin and wore a brown costume. he spoke like a typical over-modulated superhero and usually came up with colorful put-downs aimed at his partner.

Ha, I'll never apologize for watching too much TV.

The first time I saw the Cookie Crisp commercials, it was with the Cookie Crook and his dog partner being chased by the Cookie Cop, but by the late 90s they'd pared it down to just the dog, and now they have the wolf guy who kinda acts like the former mascots, but with none of the nostalgia.

I always liked the BK kids despite their lack of personality (I still have some Trolls of the wizard kid and that Kid Vid guy, who actually did have a neat costume). As a result of BK's eternally (until recently) dreadful marketing they never really were given the chance to make a strong enough impression, and now since BK's not really promoting their Kids Meals on TV anymore, they're rather unnecessary. Still, I thought I saw them on the bags a few years ago, or maybe it was somewhere in the local BK I was visiting.

I have no idea why they retired the McDonaldland characters. Mayor McCheese was a bit much, but Grimace, Birdie, and the Hamburglar were classics, and having Ronald in the "real world" just makes him seem less magical and more of a weird clown. I know about 2001 they had these animated videos with those characters in them (done in an ugly Klasky-Csupo manner from what I remember from the box), and a year or so later they had little Lego sets for Happy Meal toys and the one I picked up was a Birdie copter (I don't normally get the Happy Meal...), but other than that I think they're done. Shame.

I know they retired the Nestle Dog, Farfel, though they used him in a Christmas commercial back in 1990 or so (don't ask me why I know this).

They also seem to have retired Sugar Bear from the Post Sugar Crisps ads (though apparently some are running in Canada?), as well the frog from Sugar Smacks, and the monkey from Cocoa Krispies, and while obviously Cap'n Crunch is still a cereal, I haven't seen the Cap'n in any commercials recently. Obviously they've retired the other Jay Ward characters, Quisp and the Quake man. I think the only cereal mascots from the olden days that are still on TV are the Honeybee from Honey Nut Cheerios, Lucky (Charms), Toucan Sam, the Trix Rabbit, and Tony the Tiger.

So, she represents horror. Quite what the relation between a girl in rollerblading get-up and horror is (wouldn't a goth have made more sense?) or, indeed, how many horror movies they expected to be shown at kids' matinees, I don't know.

Thanks, Money Funk! :) That was puzzling the heck outta me.

Yeah, I agree, a Goth would've been a more logical choice to represent horror. When I hear 'horror', my mind doesn't immediately jump to 'girl in a green jumpsuit'. Not there are a wide abundance of horror flicks that are kid-friendly, anyway.

Seeing all of the pictures of the old Burger King kids and Roland with his old gang is making me remember all of the fast food commercials from when I was little. Now that just feels weird. Anyway, I think that that I still have a toy or two of the Burger King kids. I also still remember being in a Burger King when I was like four or five and looking at their pictures. I can see now that they look more like 80s stereotypes, but I wasn't over five so all of that flew right over my head. I definitely remember Grimace, but I was also surprised that some of the other mascots weren't mentioned like Birdie. Roland hasn't been used much either. Of course, most McDonald's commercials are kind of weird now anyway.

Does anyone else remember the Chef from Cinnaminn Toast Crunch Cereal? I remember how he used to be in the commercials with the kids, but for a few years now its been all about the kids asking adults if they can see what's so great about the cereal. I'll probably be able to remember more mascots later.

Come to think of it, what happened to the energizer bunny? I liked the first ones where he interrupted fake ads, but by the time it got to the bunny outwitting DARTH VADER it got old.

That was one of the funniest online comics I've read in awhile. The way that the FBI look-alike person figured it out, when most everyone else in the commercials that aren't kids can't, was hilarious.

I remember that guy. His name was Wendell, and he was original 1 of 3 chefs. There were originally 3 Cinnamon Toast Crunch bakers: a tall thin chef with brown hair, a short fat one with black hair, and Wendell (though this was before he was named), who height and weight-wise was between the 2 of them, but with white hair and glasses. The 3 chefs didn't do much more than sing about the cereal. Then at some point they dropped the other 2 bakers and left the old one by himself interacting with kids (it was round this time he received the name Wendell); those spots usually consisted of Wendell going through crazy extremes (often defying the laws of physics) in order to get the cereal.

Wendell appeared in the first couple of ads where kids would make adults look stupid because they couldn't see why kids ate Cinnamon Toast Crunch, but as the ads went on, Wendell was pushed further and further into the background until he was dropped altogether.

Actually, all three chefs had names. The fat one was named Bob and the skinny one was named Quello.

What about Mac Tonight? The crescent playing moon man who was on a piano hovering around outer space urging people to eat at Mcdonalds late at night in the late 80s?

I recall reading something about Legal issues against Duracell for badmouthing them about their battery power. I myself haven't seen the bunny in years.

i thought they were really cool too. and they were led by a big robot like villan...i remember when they released little figures of all the charecters as prizes in the box. i've still got them all somewhere.

i also remember back when the king wasn't just a creepy big plastic headed comedy mascot but more a ronald rip-off hero figure. glad someone else remembers the duke of doubt!!

Has anyone mentioned the Duracell Family? With their plastic look, weird faces, and batteries out of their backs?

Any commercial they were in, was just creepy to me.

Geez, I remember them too: The Puttermans.

Fun trivia fact: the son in those ads was played by voice actress Debi Derryberry, perhaps best known to modern audiences as the voice of Jimmy Neutron.

Maybe it's just my bad memory, but didn't Wendell go insane right around the time the other 2 chefs were dropped?

yeah i hated the puttermans....i remember a really creepy spot where they had this crazy bride of frankenstein looking aunt that was pretty scary. she's eating and babbling on and on until she just drops on the table lifeless because of course she was using the brand x batteries....the ones with the little battery operated walking dolls were alot cuter and creative...i'd love if they brought those back. the one with the two grooms carrying they're brides was great.

as far as wendell...there was one of those famous "to be continued' commercials where he and the other chefs got trapped in another dimension or something of the sort...when they concluded it i'm pretty sure they only brought back wendell unfortunatley leaving the other poor chefs stranded....maybe they can do a follow up where the other chefs come back as assimilated borgs out for revenge along with the other guy from wham! and the other old ladies from the 'where's the beef?' ad...what a cool army that would be.

The Energizer Bunny made a comeback this past year. There is a series of commercials where aliens use the Bunny's power to recharge their spaceship.

Wasn't there a Energizer commericial parodying them and then the bunny came in? I'm not sure if I remember it correctly but I remember the commercial scaring the hell out of me when I was 3.

Okay. So, they weren't "hip" per say, but they were trying to be an alternative to McDonald's goofy characters.

I forgot all about those. Kid Vid was my favorite because I liked his shades.

I'm surprised that the chief did have a name since I didn't remember it at all. I thought that he was just the Cinnamon Toast Chief. I also don't seem to recall the two other chefs, even though a couple of those clips from that video do remind me of something. Too bad that they dropped him like that since the kids making adults look dumb for not understanding the cereal has gotten kind of old.

Is the "Kookoo for Cocoa Puffs" bird still in commercials? He's one of those mascots that'd be ridiculous to drop, as he's the only reason people know about the product.

Sonny? Yes, he's still around...only he's redesigned, naked now and his craving for Cocoa Puffs has gotten a tad extreme.

You know, I saw a commercial for General Mills cereals today that was advertising the fiber content in their cereals(they neglected to mention the high sugar content, obviously) and they showed boxes of Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Lucky Charms, Cocoa Puffs, and Trix. Interestingly, I noticed that Wendell still appeared on the Cinnamon Toast Crunch box, but he was on the bottom left corner, not on the center of the box like the other mascots. Animated versions of the Trix Rabbit, Sonny, and Lucky all appeared in the commercial, but Wendell didn't. At the end of the commercial, the three characters jumped onto their cereal boxes, but no one jumped onto the Cinnamon Toast Crunch box. Wendell was just standing there in the corner of the box, smiling, hoping someone would notice him. You know, it's almost seems cruel. It's like Wendell isn't cool enough for the other cereal mascots to hang out with anymore.

I haven't seen any of them in part of a Burger King commercial lately. Then again, I can't remember the last Burger King commercial I saw. I mostly see McDonald's or Jack in the Box ads when I'm watching TV.

No, not commericals. Posters. When I drive by Burger King I see posters by the door of Kid Vid promoting the kids meal. At first I thought it was just one BK but lately I've seen 4 or 5 with the same poster.

In one of the Burger Kings down here in Florida, there's a sign in the playroom with a picture of the orange haired girl with the jersey. I was shocked when I saw that.
