Okay, for some reason my PS2 won't read any of my discs. Even ones I rent from the video store won't work on it. It just started doing this 2 hours after I got done using it last week. =[

For example: I put my Grand Theft auto 3 disc in & I go to my browser screen. But, even though it says "reading disc", "reading disc", "reading disc", the disc pic won't show up & I can't play it. Does anybody have any suggestions?

Is it giving you a disc read error?

You could try one of those disc cleaners or blowing compressed air into it.

If that doesn't work and it's already out of warranty, you could try taking it apart and adjusting the height on the disc tray. You can probably find a guide online somewhere.

Its dead, Jim.

I'm pretty sure Sony had planned obsoletion in mind when they made the PS2, and even PS1. Meaning, they were made to break so that it would force your hand to purchase a newer system.

Oh, I was gonna suggest flip it upside down if it's a blue-backed disc. It sounds silly, but that's how I get to play Rez.

But do it anyway. If not, try air-compression, etc. Is it a slim model or a fat PS2?

I've had mine since... a few months after launch? No problems.

It might just be a misaligned laser, but the fact that it went bad so fast makes me suspect it's something worse like a bad drive. You can actually fix a misaligned laser pretty easily in the first type of PS2 by opening up the case and turning a wheel inside. I did it with mine, although eventually it started to slip back. The telltale sign for a misaligned laser, at least for me, was that it slowly started to get pickier and pickier about playing certain discs, especially blue ones but also some DVDs.

That's the fix I used. If you aren't comfortable opening up expensive electronics, don't do it.
