This is inspired by the debate going on in the Britney Spears thread.

Basically, who do you guys think were the worst and best hosts of SNL ever?

Best:
Garth Brooks- I am probably the only Okie who doesn't like his music, but his SNL appearance was pure gold. He made fun of himself, was very versatile, played an old french whore so well it made you wonder, and was surprisingly pretty funny.

Steve Martin- Hey, he's a really funny guy. Also, we got hear his King Tut song on SNL.

Tom Hanks- He's a good actor with major comedy roots. No surprise here.

Charlton Heston- I was pretty surprised here. The Planet of the Apes beginning was cool. And the Psychotic bag boy skit really cracked me up.

Worst:
Pretty much any athlete or Rudy Giuliani. Try to not make it SO obvious you're reading off cue cards guys. Maybe a little emotion. Also, this includes Steinbrenner. If you're not gonna put some effort in it, don't host the show.

Steve Torbes was so much worse than Rudy Gulliani. Every single line he spoke was robotic and soul-less.

Britney Spears ranks just a notch above Steve, but is almost as equally terrible.

That's right, I forgot about him. Robotic is the right word. Also what I said about the cue cards.

I thought The Rock did a great job when he was on a couple of years ago. (Ebert even said he did.)

And Christopher Walken never disappoints. I liked that "Trivial Psychic" sketch he did quite a few years ago, but I can't remember what his name was in that.

Any former SNL cast members who come back to host are always good.

MY FAVORITE--Damon Wayans, esp. when he brought his gay film critic Blaine Edwards and drunked bum Anton over from ILC to SNL.

MY LEAST FAVORITE--Pamela Anderson Lee, particularly when she imitated another mindless blond bimbo Jenny McCarthy (complete with flatulent sound effect). Actually that was the high point of her appearance.

I don't remember it either, but I bet you it was Johnny Smith; the skit was a parody of "The Dead Zone", a 1983 film directed by David Cronenberg and based on a Stephen King novel. Walken played John Smith, a schoolteacher who, following a car accident, ends up in a coma. When he gets out of it, he is able to tell the future. This could very well be, IMO, why there are so many refs to his supposed creepiness (i.e. a number of Animaniacs and Pinky and the Brain eps). Getting back to your original statement, I completely agree. Other favorites include:

Jon Lovitz (the man can do no wrong)
Norm Macdonald (likewise; also, he had the stones to say that the show has gotten worse. Name me one other host who did that...on air!)
Matthew Perry
Jim Carrey (I can't believe no one mentioned him. Every skit he was in - esp. "The Joe Pesci Show" - made me laugh. He even managed to make the Roxbury Boys and the Cheerleaders funny.)
Heather Locklear

I really can't think of a worst host.

Ohmygosh! I just realized no one has said John Goodman yet! That guy is great. :D Let's face it, if he wasn't, would he have hosted the show like a thousand-some times.

I was gonna say that he did really well along with Cone and Wells in dresses.

Yeah, me neither. Personally, I like the crystal meth diet plan and the hottub lifeguard.

I was actually going to, his Marlon Brando potrayal on SNL jeopardy had me on the floor laughing.

Best: Tom Hanks, John Goodman, Christopher Walken (i love the sleazy date sketch he does its great when the girl throws champagne in his face.)

I can't really think of a worst guest, I can think of a lot of sketches that I haven't liked (mostly that stupid cheerleading skit, but I haven't watched SNL in ages, so I don't know if they still do that one)

I don't know about "Best", but my "Worst" vote goes out to Britney Spears. Her skits are just so... you know? I can remember a few skits she did, including playing a Barbie doll

For years, my favorite episode has been and always will be the Jim Carrey episode. That man is so damn talented.

Yeah, The Continental, it has to be one of the funniest recurring sketches on SNL.
