Hey y'all,
Just OOC, did anyone ever have a movie cover that they found disturbing to look at when they were younger?

You mean a movie poster? If so, yeah. The poster for that Steve Martin dark comedy Novacaine, the stuffed bunny with the real human teeth. And any poster or dvd cover for any Asian horror movie...those things do NOT sit right with me.

Yeah, I'm taling about movie posters.
The cover to Jaws and Jaws 2, when I was younger, gave me nightmares.
Anything with a clown on the cover. Even today, I can't stand to look at them.

Heck yes.

I'd always see this in the video store and be haunted by it. Never watched the movie, though. But come on, any movie that actually gets me to remember its name just by having its cover freak my 8-year-old self out deserves some props.

The cover for the original Child's Play, where Chucky looks like he's about to stab the viewer, spooked me for years.

yeah extremely creepy cover but he was pretty damn funny in the movie as the goof off friend turned crazy vampire flunkie...i do remember though being really freaked out as a kid by the scene with i think it was his mom hiding under the covers and jumping out showing the huge mouth with the fangs.
i always thought the rosemary's baby poster was chilling with just the siloutte of the baby carriage sitting on a mountain top.

For me, the poster to Child's Play 2, where he's standing behind the Jack-In-the-Box with the large clippers topped that one.
For some reason, the covet to A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master creeps me out a tiny bit.
I'd say just about ANY slasher flick made in the early to mid-80's had a disturbing poster before the MPAA starting getting antsy about that sort of stuff. Remember the covers for Sleepaway Camp and Silent Night, Deadly Night?

Excellent topic! I think everyone remembers being entranced/scared by the cover of a forbidden horror movie at Blockbuster when they were kid. One that comes to my mind is Jack Frost. Not the Michael Keaton family comedy, the horror movie about a serial killer snowman. Here's that cover...

I know I've said this, but the cover to Jaws 2, in particular, gave me nightmares.

The poster of One Missed Call freaked me out because it took me about two looks at it to realize that the strange woman had screaming faces for eyes.
Then I found out that she actually looked like that in the movie.

Off the top of my head I can only think of one, and I don't know what the title is. But the cover featured a nude woman (a la Jaws) who was lying atop a toothbrush, the bristles of which had been replaced by large pointed teeth. One arm dangles freely, her head to one side, and blood drips off some of the teeth. I used to see this video cover all the time at a rental shop back in the early-80s, and it always made me go back the way I'd come whenever I happened to walk near it. I wish I could find the title, though. I'd like to actually see the movie all these years later.

The original cover to Critters freaked me out as did the Nightmare Before Christmas as a young child, something very eerie about that poster with him standing upon the giant pumpkin hill. Does anyone realize how much effort used to go into posters and video art work back in the 80s? Now its just a giant blown up headshot of a celebrity and the title

Don't know the title f or thsis one, but when I was about 8, there was this run-down movie shack I used to get my videos at, anywho, when I was looking for Godzilla, I saw this obscured one, but I remember reading the tagline, "... can seduce your soul."
Puppet Master.
And I know I say this a lot, but really, the cover to Jaws 2 (as in, the original poster) did NOT sit well with me as a kid. Couldn't go near it.

Silence of the Lambs.
That poster scares the crap out of me.
The Waterworld poster scarred me as a kid.
Twilight of the Cockroaches has that really creepy giant hand.
And last but not least, the baby in the bubble poster for 2001: A Space Oddyssey.

Amen to that. It used to be that you could tell EXACTLY what you were getting into with a movie back then, because the box art basically told you the whole story (Sleepaway Camp, Gremlins, Critters, etc.) and you could tell right off wether it was a comedy, a horror film, a drama, etc.
Now it's hard to tell with some movies because the posters/boxart is so nondescript it's scary.

Ah, being a kid in the 1980s...where box covers for horror movies didn't sugarcoat the movie's violent content at all. If there was blood and gore in a horror movie, there's a good chance you'd find some of that depicted somewhere on the VHS box. If it wasn't that it was those glorious WTF covers along the lines of the toothbrush/teeth box cover Mchael mentioned earlier.
And if you didn't get enough gore from looking at the video boxes, my local rental place sold issues of Fangora.

There was also a lenticular version of the horror film 'Uncle Sam' that was released around the same time.
FYI, Jack Frost was a masterpiece compared to what came next: Jack Frost II: Attack of the Mutant Killer Snowmen, which had a budget of like, five bucks.

Yeah, I remember the fallout from that in all of the old mom-and-pop joints. Interesting times, interesting times. One of the coolest things about the Internet is that we can preserve some too :p. Ah, nostalgia.

I will agree with that. The best thing about the first film, besides the cover, was when Shannon Elizabeth got killed. :D

That particular scene was all the more disturbing once you realize that he killed her, um, with the carrot nose. I didn't think about it until they had the line in the ending credits that read 'Where was the carrot during the bathtub scene?'

Hmmm... I must be remembering it differently then. I recall him reforming in the bathtub, basically trapping her within his body with only her head and arms exposed, then I thought he had stabbed her in the face with his carrot nose.

Outside of the stabbing her in the face part, that's pretty much what happened. I haven't seen it in a while myself, but I'm pretty sure the carrot nose wasn't on his face, as you see him physically putting it back on after she's dead, which pretty much implies that He violated her with it, which is what killed her.

I'd never heard of Night of the Demons either until a friend showed it to me on VHS a few years ago. Anchor Bay released the unrated version on DVD a couple years ago. One of my favorite '80s horror flicks, with some moments that I thought were actually pretty effective in being rather creepy. Co-stars former Scream Queen Linnea Quigley.

I only saw Night of the Demons 3, and that was a chance viewing one late night of Showtime.
Another cover I remember creeping me out was Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors. I saw the poster at a video store late one night as a child, with the teens on the razor blades of Freddy's glove, and the image stuck with me.

I love that poster the one for both Night of the Demons 1 & 2, still give me the hebbie jeebies(It's something about Angela's eyes) I have the entire trilogy on VHS and part one on DVD, Night of the Demons is my all time favorite 80's Horror movie and it's always included in my Halloween film festival.
As for the remake, I'll wait to pass judgement until I see it. The original creators are involved and the plot sounds interesting. By the way reports are the Shannon Elizabeth will be playing the role of Angela(originally played by Amelia "Mimi" Kinkade), personally I'd have cast Tiffany Shepis, but I guess the studio wants a "name" actor in the lead role.
Michael24
07-29-2008, 11:17 AM
Elizabeth is still considered a "name" actor these days? I can't even remember the last thing she was in. More likely they wanted relatively no-names to keep the budget down. And I just can't imagine Elizabeth being able to pull off that creepy/sexy strobe light dance thing that Mimi Kinkade did perfectly.
Didn't know Kevin Tenney was involved, though. Interesting.
