As in,a very close friend or family member possibly spending more time with someone and sort of,in a word, replace you.

Only always. My parents could trade me in for one of my friends and be very happy.

Not really "replaced" per se, but I have sometimes been worried about being left out. Last year my brother's girlfriend moved in with us, and just as I had suspected (though my mom tried to reassure me it wouldn't happen), I was suddenly left to the side a lot of times. We basically did a lot together (watched movies and TV, played video games, went to town, etc.), but now he was doing all of those things with her. She was one of those girls that had to be involved with everything he did and didn't like it when other people would do things with him unless she could be there, too. (She got mad at him one day because he went to the movies with me, because she was working!!)
Fortunately, she eventually moved back out, and order was restored to the house. Things got a little better during the later months when she was living here, but the early months were the worst for me, and it was making me feel really bad.

No, you can never be replaced.Anyone can be replaced. People die, everyone else moves on. Replacements are usually found, given time. Often, that's what the departed would have wanted. The replacements will never be exactly the same (thus the "can never be replaced" sentiment), but that's not the point: they don't have to be exactly the same to occupy a similar position or play a similar role. In that sense, there's no reason this can't happen to someone while living, which is what the thread's question is concerned with.

Worry? Im replaced everytime my sister brings a new boyfriend home! I liken myself to the vacuum cleaner - ignored until things get messy

Replace? Why would someone bother replacing me. I would have thought they would rejoice.
