Call me uneducated, but I thought these kind of VCDs were illegal?

The "Fair Use" clause of the U.S. & International Copyright
Laws stipulate that persons may copy television programming or make back ups of motion pictures they own for private and personal use. Under these laws, you are legally allowed to "hire" out the recording of these programs, and the service of backing up copies of movies you own.
