I think Smallville is for people who don't really like Superman. They rather like Smallville, because the whole Superman idea is turned around. Take my friend for example: She is a hard core Batman fan. Does not like Superman, but watches Smallville every week. She thinks it's a cool show. At first when she started watching it, she didn't even know that Clark is actually became Superman in a different show. Untill I told her. Hey, she still likes Smallville, and hates any show that has to do with Superman.
I think it's wierd.

Excellent.
I disagree completely about this show not being for fans of Superman. Yes, you can appreciate the show if you're not a Super-fan. If you are however, the show's references to the mythology that is Superman, makes the experience all the richer.
Take the vision sequence at the end of "Hourglass." Did non-fans of Superman have any idea what that all stood for? Did they understand the Presidency or the gloved-hand? No.
Did they understand in "Leech" about the significance of Chloe giving the name "Superboy" to Eric?
Did they understand a single reference to Lex's and Clark's future friendship?
Did a non-fan of Superman truly understand all the underlying themes and casual mentions that just make a true fan want to burst out laughing? "Ever read To Kill a Mockingbird Clark?" Who outside of Superman fans understood that?
Smallville is for Superman fans. Non fans can enjoy it but they can't understand it all. They have no idea how great of a show Smallville really is.

Maybe this should be a poll?
I'd rate it as excellent. And for those of you who don't think it's good, I am gonna strap you down in your chairs and make you watch the entire Incredible Hulk series, the Nick Fury movie, the Captain America movie, the live action Spider Man series, and I will even throw the Fantastic Four movie at you for giggles, and then you will understand why Smallville is the best superhero TV show EVER.

Very Good! I just wish 24 didn't trap the same timeslot!
I caught most of those references, but what about To Kill a Mockingbird ? That flew straight over my head. And I consider myself a Superman fan :p And Calhoun, I'm pretty sure you mean its the best LIVE superhero TV show EVER and we'll just have to wait for Birds of Prey to see what happens there. :D

I think it's been very good with a great chance to be excellent. They've had some great episodes, but the quality is still inconsistent from ep to ep.
I think once they move away from the krypto-villain of the week formula, then they'll reach their full potential.

Just FAIR. Sorry.
Dawson's Creek meets the X-Files.
The inside jokes and deep references are cool;
but the show just doesn't grab me.

At first I was really against the show. I thought "Oh no, it's Kent Creek". But, I gave it a shot. And I really enjoy it. Even the Lex being in Smallville reference. Which to me was the worst offense. Turns out to be one of the strongest points to the show.
ps- I try to keep up with the comics. But, what was the significance of the "To Kill a Mockingbird" book??

I like the show but I'm also suspicious of it.
I have no problem with the "no tights, no flights" rule in Smallville since its about young Clark before he becomes Superman.
However, I worry that this edict will carry over into his adult life should the same people do a series set in Metropolis or even a movie.
Superman wears a costume and he flies.
I don't want to see the legend reduced to the adventures of Johhny Plainclothes.
and I really like Tom Wellings Clark and I think given time he could go the distance to the cape and boots and do a fantastic job.

Oooo, first one to use the poll! :D
Anyway, I went with "Very Good." The thing that keeps this show was being Excellent in my book is the Kryto-villains. This part of the show has gotten to be almost too much for me, and sometimes makes me wish I had picked 24 to watch on Tuesdays. I like just about everything else about the show, but Clark is in high school, does he really need to be fighting mutated bad guys all the time?

I went with good. I really like Lex and Tom Welling does make a very engaging Clark, but '90210 with krypto-villians' tends to grate on my nerves. I do keep watching, though. (I think I'm the only person not to like '24' so what else is there?) I'm hoping future episodes will get better, so my vote may change.

Personally, I'm both Batman and Superman fan. It's just my friend who likes Batman.

I rated it very good. And I would also have to completely disagree with the view that non Superman fans like Smallville better. Though I am a much bigger fan of Batman then I am of Superman, I have always loved Superman in any shape, way or form. I enjoy watching Smallville, the same way I will enjoy watching BOP provided that is doesn't suck and that it actually airs :p . But, it also depends on the person, as almost everything does.

Very good show, It's a cross between Dawsons Creek , the X-Files and Buffy. It's overtaken Buffy in my opinion. Buffy has been going down hill since series 5.How long Smallville last is a matter of conjecture. They can't keep going with the same formular of people being affected by the Krypton meteorites forever.I't also has to be careful not to develope into a Lois and Clark scenario.
There was talk of the show progressing with Clark Kent eventually starting work for the Daily Planet. The thing that makes the show different from the old Superboy shows is , you don't see Clark Kent in his Superman outfit.

I rate it totally excellent. :D The characters are great and the storyline hasn't had a single bad episode yet. Plus, it's completely original and has tremendous potential. Wheeeee!

All the hardcore scifi fantasy that the animated show made such good use of and actually made me love superman for the first time was thrown out the window on this one to make room for more hokey teen drama... sorry I know its well written but its definately not for me.

To Kill a Mockingbird is Clark's all-time favorite book in the comics.

I gave it a poor, which is good for me.
Calhoun, I'd rather be subjected to those than watch Smallville. Yuck!! I can't stand that show. I'm a Superman fan and I dislike it very much. I even gave it another chance recently but to no avail-I still dislike it. I can't get into it. Imo, it's too weird. Lex shouldn't be in Smallville, Kryptonite shouldn't effect humans, the Kents should look more countrified, and Lana should have red hair.(O.k., that last complaint was minor, but I had to throw it in.)

WRONG! WRONG! WRONG! WRONG!
The comics have strongly stated thet Kryptonite DOES affect humans. Wearing a kryptonite ring, Lex developed cancer in his hand and had to have it replaced with a robotic one. Other storylines have had lex driven insane by kryptonite. Also, I dont understand it but Metallo is powered by Kryptonite.
The fact is Kryptonite is basically radioactive but affects Clark far more than it does regular humans.
I agree that the Kryptovillian plot devise is growing stale, but hating it just because you feel that Humans are immune to the affects of Kryptonite is to be misinformed

Verdiboy, I wish you had quoted my entire post, because I named more reasons for my disliking it than just that one.
I never said I 'hated' the show. That's a little too strong. I said I 'disliked' it, which is a nicer word, imo.
I don't read mainstream comics, so I'll just have to take your word for it about how Kryptonite affects humans. What I do know is that making Kryptonite affect humans so that they shed their skin and suck deer is a bit too far-fetched for me.

When I 1st read the synopsis for Smallville in TV Guide, I got the impression that the show was about a young Clark Kent trying to fit in w/ humans despite his developing superpowers. I thought the show was going to revolve around Clark's personality and his personal growth. But after seeing a couple of episodes, I realized that this wasn't the case. The show revolves around Clark fighting human-kryptonite freaks. I don't like it at all.

Ya know what, I do agree with Livewire to an extent, which is why my rating goes somewhere between Very good and Excellent. And I laughed when she reminded me of that deer sucking reference. That was a strage episode!! But like all Superman shows, and shows in general, little foibles we don't like DO happen. For example Livewire herself. She shoulda stayed as a human shock jock for longer before the big transformation. She would have gotten under Clark's collar a bit better. :)
Anyway, although I am somewhat against the kryptonite thing and how it effects pretty much everyone, because it's just a superhero version of a Buffy universe (except Buffy's universe had a better reason for all the weirdness: the demon world) I have to understand that I can't hold anything against the show because they changed the story.
Like Lex being in Smallville for example. I objected to that easy at first, being a Superman fan, but it really IS one of the best aspects of the show! :)

I'm with Calhoun07, it's the best superhero show [i]ever.[\i]
The number one reason why I like this show? Two words: Lex Luthor. By far, the best characterization of Luthor I have ever seen. He's sympathetic, with an underlying ruthlessness. He's on the razor's edge, could go either way, and yet I find myself rooting for him, even though I know where his destiny lies.
I am confused by the people who are offended by Lex's presence in Smallville, but I chalk it up to not having a background that extends to before the Crisis, when Superboy and Lex were best friends.

Livewire, you complain about Lana not having red hair, but you do not complain that Pete Ross is black?
And, like others, I disagree with her suggestion that Kryptonite should not affect humans. It should. It does. If Smallville may take liberties elsewhere, I don't understand why you are against them taking liberties with how much Kryptonite does or does not affect humans.
Who is Pete Ross anyway? Sorry but so far my Superman knowledge is not beyond STAS, Superboy (live action) and Lois & Clark

Pete Ross was one of Clark and Lana's mutual friends. In fact, the comics counterparts of Pete and Lana get married, have a child. Pete is a blond haired white guy who is presently the Vice-President of the United States under Lex Luthor.
As far as S:TAS Pete Ross made a cameo appearance in part 2 of "Last Son of Krypton" when Clark eavesdropped on "Jenny telling Pete Ross her folks will be out of town this weekend" to which Lana replies "That little tart!" with a very offended, jealous air. What is important to note?
Pete Ross is not, and never was, black.

That's what I thought too, Desdiablo!!
When I first heard Smallville was coming out, I thought it would be something I would be interested in. I thought it would be a normal show about him growing up in Smallville. I had no idea it would turn into what it is. It wasn’t at all what I had expected, and I don’t care to watch it.
Like I said before, I don't read mainsteam comics, so I don't know what goes on in them. What information I do know about Superman comes from S:TAS and the animated Supes comics. It doesn’t bother me that people enjoy watching Smallville. They probably like it because they read mainstream comics and understand the concept more . I was fair, however. I watched a few episodes all the way through and didn’t like it at all. I can’t help it if a show doesn’t appeal to me. As I said before, the premise that Kryptonite can turn the people that it comes into contact with into whatever weird thing they become was going overboard, imo.

The relationships are the best part of the show - by far. Although they have done a better job making their villains more interesting (the Jitters guy, the Hug guy), it was the character interactions that kept me watching the show. The whole Lana, Clark, and Chloe triangle thing, Lex and Clark's relationship (best part of the series by far), Lex and his dad, heck Lex with anyone automatically becomes interesting.
Once they start writing compelling villains and storylines, I think that's when Smallville's gonna hit it's peak.
