With the New York Comic Con coming this week. Which titles do you guys hope get licensed (be it anime/manga wise)?

For me. I'm hoping that the following get licensed;

Amatsuki

Licensor choices
- Bandai Entertainment
- FUNimation Entertainment

Just watching the first episode alone proved to have a really good impression. Like how two school buddies enter this virtual reality version of Japan's Edo era. And overall becomes like a modern day Rurouni Kenshin.

---

- MAJOR

Licensor choices
- FUNimation Entertainment
- Viz Media

This' been mostly my favorite long running Shogakukan project. Goro's growth in baseball. Well, I was hoping that FUNimation got this instead instead of Swing Big!

---

- Yakitate!! Japan (anime version)

Licensor choices
- Bandai Entertainment
- FUNimation Entertainment
- Media Blasters (Anime Works)
- Viz Media

Dispite it's quirkiness, this anime was really hilarious and interesting to watch.

I'd like to hear that someone is saving 5 Centimeters Per Second from ADV's continuing saga of implosion.

That and good news on Gundam 00's DVD release--season sets, super high quality limited edition releases--will make me happy even in the absence of all other news.

I'd like to hear that someone is saving 5 Centimeters Per Second from ADV's continuing saga of implosion. That said I wouldn't mind ADV pulling out a nice surprise or something that shows that they're not completely dead.

I'd also like to see when FUNi will start releasing their new ADV acquisitions, so I can plan ahead accordingly with what I want from them.

That and good news on Gundam 00's DVD release--season sets, super high quality limited edition releases--will make me happy even in the absence of all other news. That too, although those high quality LEs have to be really REALLY super special awesome for me to get them. Maybe some Victory Scotch, Gin, and/or Rum with a winking Sumeragi as its logo, "Sumeragi's Victory Rum: For the lush large-chested tactician in you."

I don't care that only three episodes have aired in Japan, I want Slayers Revolution picked up ASAP.

And I want Cartoon Network to Adult Swim to confirm some specific titles for TV broadcast, but that's off-topic and probably too tall of an order.

With the New York Comic Con coming this week.NYCC is in February (http://www.nycomiccon.com/).

Then I was thinking you meant New York Anime Fest (http://www.nyanimefestival.com/), but that's in September.

Now San Diego Comic-Con (http://www.comic-con.org/cci/) is this week. Did you mean that?

Can we have a mod fix the topic title for San Diego Comic Con? Might as well keep this one, now that its gotten started.

As it happens Bandai's website (http://www.bandai-ent.com/) has a countdown suggesting that an announcement will be made at San Diego Comic Con, considering that the lowest one hits zero late Thursday afternoon on the west coast. The other countdown happens to end in time for Otakon.

Yeah, those would be nice, but it's too bad Toonami won't be around for Reborn if that gets licensed. But there's always Jetstream.

No, I wanted Slayers to get licensed. I wanted CN and AS to actually announce they're still picking up anime series . . . though Slayers Revolution, so far, would be a pretty good fit for Toonami, admittedly . . .

Basically I'd like to see Code Geass R2 get on TV. It wouldn't be right to have the first season make it and not the 2nd.

It aint going to happen, because first you would need to bring over the manga. You should know that Major is a series with over 60 volumes.

Also since Funi brought over History's Strongest Disciple, Viz should bring over the manga.

Hmm, some nice Del Rey News (http://giapet.net/2008/07/24/sdcc-random-housedel-rey/):

OK, here goes the manga stuff. Fly, fingers, fly! No italics for now, htnl is so tricksy on a phone:

- CLAMP in America, a cmpletely original retrospective of clamp’s role in the us manga world. By clamp, natch, and Shaenon Garrity, with interviews, history, and 300 full color drawings– 2009 release.
- Negima Neo, by someone who is not Ken Akmatsu.
- Orange Planet, by Instant Teen’s Haruka Fukushima.
- Yokai Doctor, can’t read the creator’s name.
- Soryuden novel (illustrated by Clamp version)

That’s it for manga-related news. Now, some q&a, again only including the manga-related, starting with the Yukikaze novels– acquisitions manager is writing the title down, so they’ll consider it.

And the usual Kodansha question…Dallas more or less waves the question off and hopes that Kodansha does well, meanwhile Del Rey continues to license stuff from ‘em.

Yes, they have considered Vinland Saga, but no announcement for now.

Are they considering a manga anthology magazine? Hachette, Yen’s owner, is a magazine distributor- but Random House is books, so they’re hesitant, but it’s not impossible, especially if Yen+ does really well.

Clamp to the US? nothing planned. They’re working through details on the clamp retro, it will probably be softcover to make it more affordable but they are going as premium as they think fans can afford.

Well of course, G4 hates anime fans with a passion. Ever see the X-Play reviews for the Naruto or One Piece games? I believe at one point they called Naruto fans "mentally challenged."

Shows that are still airing in Japan aren't likely to be picked up right now. Love-Ru is just another forgettable niche fanservice show, the exact kind the industry doesn't need, so I wouldn't hold my breath for it. Maybe Media Blasters will grab it, they seem to be in love with the obscure these days.

Shonen Jump's Waq Waq & Tegami Bachi

The North American publisher Viz Media (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/company.php?id=4552) announced at its Shonen Jump (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=1363) panel at Comic-Con International today that it has licensed the Wāq Wāq manga by Ryu Fujisaki (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=813) and the Tegami-bachi (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/manga.php?id=8256) (Letter Bee) manga by Hiroyuki Asada (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=19120). Wāq Wāq will be serialized in Shonen Jump magazine in the United States in August of 2009. Tegami-bachi centers on a boy who has become a Letter Bee, a courier who delivers special messages between the different areas of a land in perpetual night, all while fending off armored insects. Tegami-bachi will start serialization in March 2009, when it will replace Slam Dunk (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/manga.php?id=1596) in Shonen Jump. (Slam Dunk will continue to be published in the faster, compiled-volume format.) From now on, every color page in the Japanese magazine serialization of licensed manga will also be published in color in Shonen Jump.

As a surprise guest, Stan Lee (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=14236) also appeared at the panel to promote his and Hiroyuki Takei (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=5932)'s Ultimo collaboration (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2008-07-25/viz-picks-up-waq-waq-tegami-bachi-manga#), which will be previewed in the September issue of Shonen Jump. In addition to Ultimo and his Heroman anime (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2008-07-25/viz-picks-up-waq-waq-tegami-bachi-manga#) project with BONES (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/company.php?id=198), he hinted at a third, unannounced project in Japan.

20th Century Boys & Pluto

The North American anime and manga (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2008-07-25/viz-adds-20th-century-boys-pluto-manga#) distributor Viz Media (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/company.php?id=4552) has announced at its Comic-Con International panel today that it licensed the acclaimed 20th Century Boys (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/manga.php?id=3424) and Pluto manga (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/manga.php?id=3871) from Naoki Urasawa (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=7081) (Monster (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/manga.php?id=1511), Yawara (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=1325), Master Keaton (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/manga.php?id=3880)). In the story of 20th Century Boys, a man realizes that calamities cropping up around the world have eerie similarities to idle plans he and his childhood friends made decades ago. The manga is the basis for a movie trilogy being shot in Japan.

Pluto is Urasawa's re-envisioning of Osamu Tezuka (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=883)'s Astro Boy (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/manga.php?id=1343) world. Urasawa's story expands upon one of Tezuka's minor characters, the Europol detective Gesicht, into a mystery manga that deals with crimes in a society of robots and humans. It is rare in Japan for one manga creator to re-interpret another manga creator's work. Both manga titles will launch next February on a bimonthly schedule.

Before I mention my thoughts on the convention so far, I just wanted to say "thank you" to Funimation for having the first season of Case Closed on sale at their booth. I don't know why they didn't sell the DVD's for the past two [or more] years but thank you for giving the show some exposure.

Unfortunately, that's the only positive thing I can say about Funimation at Comic-Con this year. Their booth was small and consisted of the DVD wall, some ads for upcoming shows, and some game booths for DBZ Burst Limit and Afro Samurai. It felt very reminiscent of last year. I was hoping they would do something to make up for not having a panel but alas it didn't happen for me. Better luck next year I suppose.

The Viz booth, on the other hand, was spectacular. Not only did they have the guest signers (the Laker Girls look better in person) promoting Slam Dunk but they also have a dunk game where you make free throws and get prizes for good scores. Their walls were decorated with manga art plus they had a personal wall dedicated to Bleach where you can post questions to Tite Kubo. In addition, they provided free manga samplers and demostrations of their manga mobile service.

This was the first year where I went to a Bandai panel and from the trailers I saw, there were two shows which looked really good: Gundam 00 and Lucky Star (which looks very funny and should replace Shin Chan immediately). I can understand the surprise the crowd had when Gurren and Gundam were announced for Sci Fi, but I was surprised that so many people gasped when the panelist mentioned Code Geass was on Adult Swim.

I'm pretty tired out right now so I'll post some more comments later, but I'll say on a personal level that this year's con has provided the most informative news that I've ever witnessed.

No one knows Code Geass is on Adult Swim. They're too busy promoting Tim and Eric for the umpteenth time.
