Check out the costumes we old-timers had to pick from back in the 70s. You kids today are so spoiled.

When I was five, I remember my mom made me a white karate top and bought me a dog mask and I went around the neighborhood as Hong Kong Phooey. And I thought it was great.
That's my embarrassing revelation for the week. Maybe even the month. :o

LOL! The flipper one cracked me up for some reason! :D
I want a Rubik's Cube costume.

--the Swedish Chef from The Muppet Show for a couple of years. That was my favorite costume. Then of couse there was the perennial favorite, the hand-me-down Mickey Mouse suit that both my brothers wore (but I think I, being older and too big, thankfully escaped).
I'm oddly intrigued by the Small Wonder costume. I can see a rabid fan keeping that mask for "...uhhh...collectible purposes" as well....

The Village People? What th--?!
Fortunately, these kinds of costumes survived into the early 80s. I had an Inspector Gadget costume in the same style, with the mask that looks OK, and the crummy-looking, unrealistic, blatantly advertising plastic suit. It was great fun! :D
I think that was the only one of those that I had, but I did also dress up as Spider-Man using one of those masks and the Spidey T-Shirt that came with my Spidey Underoos. The T-Shirt looked just like the pattern on Spidey's outfit! If I could find one of those my size today, I'd snatch it up in a second! :D

When I was four, I had one of those plastic costumes with the mask (it was of Poochie, I don't know if anyone remembers her), and I couldn't see very well out of the eyeholes, and I fell down a flight of stairs. After that, my mom would never let me wear any costume with a mask ever again. Thanks mom :) !

Dang, that Rubik's cube costume actually looks good. I wish I had it one year....no, really! ^^;;
I remember taking some scrubs from the hospital and dressing up as a doctor...I just was too dumb and young not to splatter blood on me for added effect. Noooo, I had to be a cute little one...:D
Wait, one year I went as the Ninja Turtles' van. No kidding. It was a lot of work trying to sit down....

That was exactly what always bothered me about those costumes, also.
Plus when you tried to stick your tongue out at somebody it really hurt. And you were lucky if you made it through the night without the crappy rubber band that holds the mask on breaking. Oh yeah, and it would get tangled up with your hair.

Not to mention those eyeholes were sharp as knives.
So wait, I must be really out of the Halloween costume look, but are they still making those plastic masked costumes for kids? I wore them as a little kid, but then I moved on to more "natural" costumes. I've kept thinking that the plastic masked costumes were still around though.

GAH, memories! I remember those. My friend had a Barbie one.
Nah, I don't think they make those anymore. The ones used to bug me when I was young were the costumes that only had the "accessories". For example, a french maid's costume would have the cap, a necktie, little thingies for the wrists, and maybe if you're lucky, an apron. But they'd show a model in a full French maid's outfit. :P

i think they still make some of the old plastic half masks, but the new full costumes for kids are way cooler and more accurate looking..the batman, superman, x-men and spiderman ones are really cool looking..they even give you the foam fake muscles..hey i could even use some of those :D but compared to early eighties stuff forget about it...i had what was supposed to be a spiderman one..basically what looked like a bright yellow, blue and orange tied dye smock was supposed to be the costume, complete with a crappy half mask with those wonderfull eyeholes and straps everyone's mentioned so far..i still have pictures of it somewhere..gotta still make a memo to burn all those. ;) but man, compared to today's spiderman kid's costumes forget it..what they have know is what i always had in mind..i would've sold me soul for it when i was eight...

I love wearing Halloween costumes, and when I was able to, I made sure I made my own. When I was little, I know that I went as a ghost a lot, and as a witch with my big sis. I try to forget those years....lol. One of my best years was when I went as the Phantom of the Opera, that was just so awesome! And for the past three or four years I've gone as Batgirl :p, except this last year when I did Hermione Granger. Man, I really need to think of what I'm gonna be next year! What would you hate to go as? I feel kinda sorry for kids who have to go as like, a bunch of grapes, or something.

Heh, heh, once my brother went as a big fat pumkin. You have to see it to think it's funny :p .

I love the Fantasy Island one. It looks like some demented religious icon with Tattoo's face in a sunburst like that.
