View Full Version : what 80 and 90 franchise deserves a revival ?

With all this 80's comeback what old 80 and 90's property should get a
animated revival ?

I'm still waiting for a watchable Transformers series that would do G1 some justice. Otherwise I'd say The Thundercats. He-Man & TMNT were revamped tastefully. Heck, I'd even say Gargoyles. Weisman is still in the rookery (when not spinning webs for The Spectacular Spider-Man). Ghostbusters still has legs: pending video game and CGI sequel (TBD).

I'd like to see some of WB and Disney's earlier TV shows get some sort of revival, in the form of a new TV show, some DTV movies, or even theatrical short subjects.

I'd much prefer some of my favorites to stay as they are. There's tons of things that could go wrong.
- They'd do the show in a horrible anime-wannabe style.
- They'd mess up the character's personalities. So much so that they don't even resemble who they should be.
- They'd try to make it to edgy, something that kids or teens can relate to and make it lame.
These things could either happen separately or all together. However, I would like to see a Thundarr the Barbarian remake but only if it's done by the people who did the 2002 He-Man and the Masters of the Universe series. Anyone else might screw it up horribly.

-The Mask (anything who could help to forget "son of the Mask")

-Mighty Mouse (keeping it in the same vein as Ralph Bakshi's MM new adventures)
-Dog City
-Talespin
-Chip'N'Dale Rescue Rangers
-Ducktales
-Sailor Moon
-Samurai Pizza Cats
-Saber Rider & the Star Sheriffs
And if we could include live-action:
-You Can't Do that on Television (they could even do as an animated series remake, the main advantage is they could keep the same cast;) )

Besides, Adamag, didn't you already create a thread like this? Or maybe even more than one? I've only been here a year, but it seems like all of your threads are about 80's or 90's shows getting an update.

Am I the only one that doesn't want to see another "revival" of some 80s/90s show? Some of these cartoons like He-Man and Voltron are fine for their nostalgia, but IMHO, these shows just weren't all that good. You try and turn something that's plot can be explained in 60 seconds into a movie, it's just not good.

The He-man revival was excellent, though.
For sitting on it's ass until the end of the first season with random fillers which were actually remakes of old random fillers before actually getting a kick in the pants with "council" of evil" on, it was only half good.
I`ve read interviews from the original creators that they wanted to do an actual story with the show instead of "He-man saves village X from skeletor, Iteration 23. Skeletor gets away, everyone laughs and learns a moral". Mattel hit them with rediculous constraints such as not being able to kill/send off useless charachters or give new people proper introductions. Heck, the VA of She-Ra was constrained from ever using her "she-Ra" voice for any other production EVER.
So, this begs the question of why did they waste so much time in season 1 after the excellent intrduction movie doing random crap that barely affected the story at all? the answer: Nostalgia. Nostalgia kills.
The series need to be reinvented, with NODS to the original series, not a blow by blow remake like He-Man MOTU 2002. Heck, skeletor calling himself "Overlord of E-ville" probably drew away a lot of people. What villain, other than demons, think they are evil themselves?
Season 2/ end of season 1 was great, and showed the true potential of what a reinvention is supposed to be, but ratings wise, it was too little, too late.

I agree. Hollywood already lacks originality as it is. That being said...there are certain shows that were good enough that deserve revivals. Animaniacs is a good example. Heck, WB should just bring back Looney Tunes! But, yea, ultimately I agree with you.

Rather than remade, I'd rather the shows to be reshown on mainstrean channels, not specialised ones, so it's more accessable, like I don't have Boomarang cos I can't afford it. It will get kids to watch better toons. Anyway 80's/90's shows I'd like to come back at Earthworm Jim, Animaniacs, Pinky and the Brain, Garfield, Batman, Spiderman, Tiny Toons, some Disney series like Ducktales, Freakazoid, turtles, Johnny Bravo etc

I wouldn't mind seeing Darkwing Duck be picked up again (continuing were the show left off in season 3), or starting over again to be a tad more serious (like the movie pilot was) as I've heard the creator wanted it to be.
Even though I'm not a fan of the old TMNT toon, I do think that a station like Boomerang should air the repeats for the shows fans. As well as other 80s and 90s toons.

I can't visualize a show like Darkwing Duck working today the way it did 18 years ago. In fact, thats true for all of Disney's earlier shows and the WB stuff from the early 90s. They just don't make shows like the these anymore, and I mean that from a technical standpoint. I cant just imagine them using anything close to the old art styles of these programs, especially since Disney shuttered their in-house TV animation departments, no one goes to TMS for American animation anymore and Startoons has also closed shop. I can also easily see them simplifying and stylizing the designs on the characters too and I just can't picture a show like Animaniacs or DW with digital ink and paint and computer generated backgrounds. And since they can't get away with some of the material they used to shows like Darkwing Duck and Animaniacs would end up seriously dumbed down and neutered. Really, who wants to see that? And in response to Mandi-chan, the pilot to DW wasn't really all that serious. I really wouldn't want to see them try to make Darkwing Duck anything more than what it was: a goofy, cartoony superhero spoof.
I echo other members here, lets get something original. I can always just be thankful I can get the complete series of Ducktales, Darkwing and Animaniacs on DVD...oh wait...I can't. Bite me, Disney and Warner Home Video.

SwatKats didn't have any ongoing story arcs. Each episode was a self contained story. Granted, there was no true final episode in which T-Bone and Razor's true identities were revealed to the public, but the producers just wanted to keep that open ended in case they got the chance to make more episodes.

I have to say Centurions. That has been one of my favorite 80s cartoon and I feel it deserves a comeback. You know . . . that would be a very interesting remake. Geez, that's, like, three, maybe four years down the line. Will we even care by then?
Show I'd like to see remade?
Galaxy High. Great concept from the word go. A pair of high schoolers (an all-star athlete and a brainiac) become prestigious students at Galaxy High School, an intergalactic hub of alien students. Their fortunes are reversed (the brainiac is loved because of her intelligence and the athlete is forced to become a better student while being classified as a dork).
Great show that should have lasted longer than one season.

I second Pirates of Dark Water. That is still one of my favorite cartoons, and the fact that they canceled without finding all thirteen treasures totally bums me out. What with the anime craze, you could even fool a couple people into watching it!
Another show I believe needs a new episode lot is Powerpuff Girls. The first few seasons were awesome, so they should so back to that formula. The last season was not as good, but I'd even be happy if they would air whole episodes on their own instead of on Top 5 (and they need to air "See Me, Feel Me, Gnomey"!)

I vote this. With its appropriately topical nature, and chances of an inevitable movie being released alongside, it would be a crime not to.
Aren't 90's cartoons still too "new" for revivals? I'd rather the studios continue to churn out entertaining shows like Chowder or The Mighty B! in oppose to the usual nostalgia cash-out.

I second reviving SWAT Kats. It was dark and serious enough for a show with anthro-cats but rocked hard, especially the opening themes and all of T-Bone and Razor's gadgets and vehicles. The second season was never finished and the atmosphere and characters made this series a joy to behold. I'd love to see what could be done with it today as long as it kept the dark, rocking style to it.

I strongly agree, wholeheartedly! There is hope though! From what I've heard Craig McCracken is either working on or is finished with the final 6th season of Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends. Also Tara Strong said in an interview a few months ago for "The Big Spoon" that there's a good possibility for new Powerpuff Girls episodes after being questioned by the interviewer about the upcoming TV Movie. So in other words we PPG fans have a greater chance of getting back new, quality, superb seasons (made by the creator Craig McCracken himself) should the series ever get revived rather than the crap we saw during 2003-2005.

I'm a fan of the Holograms myself, and if a Jem reboot can be done, and because of the fear of a lawsuit by the real-life Misfits band, just change Pizzazz, Roxy and Stormer's band name to the Limp Lizards, and reboot everything else to fit today's music scene while still keeping the look of the original characters.
If they did reboot it, I want the art to be done in the same style of Ben 10: Alien for realistic purposes, the Transformers: Animated style for crossover purposes with that show.

To be honest, the only reason I want revivals of some of my favorite '90s shows is because with all the 80's cartoons revivals in recent years, it would be an injustice if no 90's cartoons got the same treatment, and I'd envy 80's cartoons fans. Hey, if Strawberry Shortcake got a revival, why can't Animaniacs and/or Darkwing Duck (maybe in DTV or theatrical short form as opposed to TV).

But creating new shows is risky, and IMO it is likely most of them will fail, especially if they aren't given a chance to build an audience - it's either an instant hit or it goes off-the-air nowadays. After all, why risk money on an unproven property when you can just do something with one people are already familiar with, such as the Ninja Turtles, very popular in the past, and still has a significant fanbase after nearly a quarter-century?

A new Gargoyles series or a Gargoyles spin-off even would be awesome, especially for an audience that is sad Avatar ended and are currently looking for some of the same caliber to watch.
The original idea behind Freakazoid with a manic superhero like the Creeper would be fun too. But I've always liked the Creeper.

For the 1990s Spider-man would be the more interesting, to see how Peter Parker/Spidey will find Mary-Jane Watson, bringing a sort of real closure to this series.
