I'm making the rounds on some of the boards I used to have the time to frequent since I have some time today. (I came here first, BTW :p ). Anyway, I skip on over to IGN, and I am shocked to find out that the ENTIRE BOARD is now a pay service for that Insider deal. Say goodbye to IGN, they must have doing worse off than they led on if they made the entire board Insider only.

Oh well, it was nice while it lasted. Or at least until some of the older regulars started acting like *blanks* for various reasons.

I was really mad. I'm probably never going to go to the site again. The worst thing though, is that you can't read the message posts. :( They're gonna be gone in 1 1/2 years. trust me.

What I want to know is why the video game site I work for hasn't updated for like 5 days. At least we don't charge money.

I was a free member but there is no way I would pay for something like that. I'm sure gamespot.com can tell me just about the same stuff for nothing. That's where I usually go anyway.

IGN has sold out big time now. I trust gamespot.com more anyway.

gamefaqs.com is also a good alternative to IGN. I go there frequently.

I wouldn't be too quick to bash them. Out of all the comprehensive video game sites out there (i.e. they attempt to cover everything), they're the only ones to my knowledge that doesn't have a magazine base, or a large corporation (like how Ziff-Davis helps out Gamespot) helping them out. They do a good job of covering damn near everything (though I'm still bitter about that stupid MGS Gamecube hoax... though it seems like all the print mags invent hoaxes all the time) like a magazine does... and guess what? We pay for magazines. So I, for one, don't mind forking over 25 bucks a year for the great coverage... I think it's more than worth the money.

However, I think they really dropped the ball on the whole board thing. They should have let everyone know in advance, and I think it was far too excessive to cut off reading access. And apparently, most of the IGN editors feel the same way (it was Snowball.com who calls the shots).

Do I worry about the fate of IGN? Yes, but people have been predicting its demise for over two years now. Plus they brought in a new full-timer for its Xbox site and are about to hire another PS2 guy, so I don't think they're doing too badly at this point.
