View Full Version : Cartoons you've re-discovered.

Some cartoons are so good that you never really stop watching them. Yea, you may take breaks every once in a while but you never really stop. Then, there's shows that even though you like you just stopped watching them for whatever reason. Then, years later re-discover them.

So, what cartoons have you re-discovered?

MY LIST:
1. Recess. This was a show I watched back when it premiered in 1997. I watched it till about `98 or `99. Then in the summer of 2005 I noticed that Toon Disney aired the show a lot during the early afternoon and got hooked.

2. Power Rangers (yea, I know it's not a cartoon). Like every kid in America I was obsessed with Power Rangers back in 1993. I sticked with the show till Turbo in `97. In 2004, Tommy returned in Dino Thunder. I checked out a few episodes but didn't really have time for it. Then, in 2006 I noticed that Toon Disney aired Dino Thunder at 11pm and that ABC Family was airing the originals (MMPR) at 8am and got hooked for some strange reason.

3. X-Men. This is the most recent re-discovery. I started watching this show in `92 and continued watching till it's run on FOX Kids ended. And, now, after all these years I started watching it again since Toon Disney is airing it.

Mission Hill: Recently started airing on Adult Swim for the first time in ages. This was just one of several prime time cartoons that WB never committed to, despite their greenlighting the thing, but I didn't discover the series until August 2004, at least two years after debuting (with still unaired episodes) on AS. It's actually quite enjoyable if you can survive the poor color palette.

Nothing I can really think of, the only cartoons I've stopped watching are those I can't watch so I can't really 're-discover' them sadly!

Moomins, I haven't seen that since the start of the 1980's.

Moomins

Have no idea of what that is.

The Moomins are one of several different tv series based on a Finnish children's book series. Most of the series were made in Japan.

I can't think of series that I've rediscovered so much as being frustrated because I cannot get access to old favorites, like the Mighty Mouse theatrical cartoons.

If I must name a rediscovery it would be the Fleisher Popeye series in 1997. A friend asking me about them led me from my exclusive concentration on anime to my scattered interest in everything animated today.

The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy. It was never a fave of mine, but lately I find myself tuning into it more often than I did when it was still in production. And I find myself really appreciating its fatalistic sense of humor. I could still do without the gross-out stuff, though. When I rewatch the Big Boogey Adventure special, I always tune away at the point where Billy...does the thing...with the boat  .

It's not so much "rediscovered" as "finally got to see some of the later episodes",but I got way more into Futurama after Adult Swim started playing it (Fox always seemed to change time slots/show it at 7 or 7:30pm,and I missed alot of season 3 and 4 episodes when they first ran)...

I got into Gargoyles when USA Network started playing the series on weekday mornings in '97....Before then, while I had seen an episode or two when it first ran,I wasn't that into it,but seeing it on a daily basis got me to appreciate the characters and how their story developed....

Pepper Ann- I didn't like it that much when it was on ABC but I fell in love with the reruns on Toon Disney

Wuzzles- I vaguely remember watching it on Disney way back when but got hooked on it in 2001 when I got Toon Disney

Been finding a lot of old and mostly vague Hanna Barbera cartoons, which I've spent a lot of afternoons lately watching at least one series each day. From the mostly common - like Yogi Bear, Pixie and Dixie, Snooper and Blabber - to the sometimes forgotten - like Hokey Wolf, Yippey, Yappey and Yahooey and the Hillbilly Bears. Was really intresting to see how the animation improved for HB in later years with these shorts, even with the verbal dialogue.

I only vaugley remembered pieces of Gwenevere and the Jewel Riders from snippets of the show when I was smaller, but for the longest time I'd wanted to find the show with "flying horses, and really long hair."

Just recently someone was finally able to point me in the right direction, and while it might not be the best show around, I'm getting a kick out of revisiting something that's escaped me for so long.

Pretty much everything I grew up with, Garfeild and Friends, Sonic The Hedgehog, Dexter's Lab, 2 Stupid Dogs, Ren and Stimpy, Looney Tunes and Tom and Jerry are just a few I still like to this day, pretty much anything with a cool style and good characters is a good show for me.

BTW: Thanks for reminding me of Moomins, haven't seen the show in ages.

I'd probably say The Batman. I didn't really watch it that much while it was airing (that Pro-B:TAS complex...), but when I saw the movie Batman VS. Dracula, I wish I had watched the show more. It still wasn't up there with Bruce Timm's Batman cartoons, but still pretty enjoyable.

I used to see The Legend of Prince Valiant on the Family Channel in the early 90's, and was able to rediscover it thanks to the recent DVD releases. The show was even better than I remembered. It is a family show, it teaches lessons without being as over-moralizing as much of the syndicated fare of the time, it has adventure and drama, and it's tied to the idealized aspects of Arthurian myth as well as its original comic strip. It also did a good job of creating conflict between different points of view, as opposed to straightforward good vs. evil plots every episode (though it had those too). The animation shows it's age, but Prince Valiant is one of the best cartoons of its time.

Johnny Test-I mentioned this in an earlier thread, but when JT first debuted on Kids' WB, I thought it was one of the dumbest shows out there. I've since re-discovered Johnny on Cartoon Network, and I actually kind of like it now. My favorite characters are Johnny's sisters, Dukey the dog and the mom, Lila.

-Of course, now CN's replaying the epiosdes to death, but there you go.

OK,this thread is going in two directions.

Some people say they watched a show some years ago and got back into it.Which I think was the original poster's meaning.Hence the 're-discover' part.

On the other hand, some people say that they weren't into a show at first and some time later discovered it to me good.Much like me and Teen Titans.

Maybe it doesn't matter...

Space Ghost to Coast-I used to love this show so much on late night CN, it was off for a while but came back and have been watching it. Super funny.

The Simpsons-I wasn't a fan of the newer episodes, but now season 19 had some good ones, I've become a fan agian.

The only cartoon that I've re-discovered is Batman: The Animated Series. I needed to watch some episodes that featured Batman and his conflicts with the Joker for a paper, which was really fun to write by the way, and I remembered how much I enjoyed watching those episodes way back when they were on television. Seeing Batman in action and seeing the dark cool storyline in those episodes brought back a wave of nostalgia that made me watch more after the paper was finished.

Rediscovered a buried gem of an animated feature, 1997's Cats Don't Dance. I remember liking this movie when I was younger and I hadn't watched it in years until very recently. How in the world did a quality feature like this fail? Terrible marketing, hard competition and bad dividing of Time Warner's properties, that's how. The characters have real emotion, the songs are memorable and the animation just flows beautifully. It's a shame it was a flop, only making about $3.5 million in its paltry theater release.

If you haven't seen it, please do. It's thoroughly enjoyable and you won't regret it.

Nothing recently, but in high school, I was stoked at having rediscovered Secret of NIMH. The darker mood of the film was perfect for that time of life. Then in college, it was ExoSquad. I spent more than a few nights working in studio while watching/listening to the opening and closing emulti-parters.

God, I hated that show. It was also pretty creepy when you stopped to think about it.

Okay, so Morgana la Fay has imprisoned the real Arthur and his knights, so Merlin brings a football team back in time to rule Camelot and battle her forces.

Okay, no one but Merlin and Morgana know that these are not the real King Arthur and knights. Not even Queen Guinevere... who believed this guy was her husband. So, we have this so called Knight of Justice boning this woman under false pretenses, and it really amounts to rape. Or it would in any criminal court. I wonder if Fake Lancelot was having his fun with her too.

Yes, I know Merlin is creepy enough to allow woman to get raped for the greater good. He did assist Uther in the death of Gorlois so he could have his way with Gorlois' wife, Igraine. Hell, Merlin even disguised Uther as Gorlois with magic to do it.

Still... there are your Knights of Justice. Right there.

Gargoyles- The show went off when I was 4 so I was never truely able to appreciate all the work that went into it. I recently watched the whole series and excluding the 3rd season the show was great. Although the animation was iffy at times which is something I never noticed I enjoyed it so much more than I ever did all those years ago.

In the last few months, I've re-discovered a few nostalgic cartoons that I loved as a kid.

The first one was "Around the World With Willy Fog", which was pretty obscure in the US, or at least to my knowledge. But, it was popular in Spain (Where it was animated), and the UK. Of course, I had no idea that it was based on the Jules Verne book back then. Hearing the opening theme had me tingling with nostalgia. I remember having a video as a kid, and watching it to death. But, I can't seem to find it anywhere.

The other one is Tale Spin. Again, just hearing the theme song was enough to set me back to when I was 5 or so. I can't believe I didn't know that Baloo was the same character from The Jungle Book, but in some 1930's setting until my friend and I were talking about the show in a conversation about cartoons we used to watch.

Hmm. Methinks someone misinterpreted the question, or is unclear on the meaning of the word "rediscovered".

A show that has just started airing or has stopped airing altogether without a reprise can't be rediscovered.

Also, let's not forget to explain our choices. The list thing we need here is another list thread.

I rediscovered Fillmore! a couple days ago.

I remember seeing a handful of episodes back when it was on the old One Saturday Morning block ABC used to have and definitely liked it, but now that I'm seeing it with more mature eyes, I can appeciate it more for being the closest a kid's show can get to capturing the essence of a crime drama. It has the tension, the sleuthing, interesting main characters and the sheer amount of clubs, activities and such that X Middle School had provided a nearly endless supply of material.

It contained a lesser-known, but still stellar performance by Tara Strong as Ingrid Third and honestly, Orlando Brown's portrayal of Cornelius Fillmore is the only role I can give him genuine credit for.

And for the record, "Crackers" will always be a better exclamation than "Disco" ever was.
