The Fantastic Four have Dr. Doom, the X-men have Magneto. What villain is best associated with the JL? And who exactly is considered to be in their Rogue's gallery?

I'm not 100% sure who all is in their rogues gallery so I'm just going to list off the first few names that come into my mind.

Vandal Savage
Injustice Gang
White Martians
Felix Faust
Starro
Applexians
Neron

There's more, but I can't really think of who right now.

That's a good question. I don't know which villian I would consider to be the JLA's "Dr. Doom." They definitely have their own rogues gallery, though.

Most of their traditional enemies came from their original adventures in the 1960's Silver Age. A lot of these villians continued to plague them throughout the 70's and into the early 80's.

those villians would include:

Starro (the first enemy they faced)
Dr. Ivo
Amazo
Despero
Felix Faust
Abnegazar, Rath & Ghast
Lord of Time
The Key
T.O. Morrow
Dr. Destiny
Queen Bee
Dr. Light
Kanjar Ro
Brainstorm
Amos Fortune
the Shaggy Man
The Royal Flush Gang
The Crime Syndicate

The Injustice Gang of the World and the Construct debuted in the 70's.

The 80's and early 90's League regularly fought a new Queen Bee, the Injustice League and Overlord (I think that was his name)

Grant Morrison's recent JLA run helped produce a new batch of rogues including:

Prometheus
yet another new Queen Bee
the White Martians
a new Injustice Gang led by Lex Luthor
The General
Star Conqueror
Azmodel

I may be forgetting one or two more. As for which one is the baddest of the bad, that's up for debate.

I don't think that there's one villain that defines them as a team. That's okay, because the Avengers never really had one either.

I think that the JLA's main adversary would be Vandal Savage. I hope there's a good story coming up in the mainstream comic that really showcases him. I can't wait for "The Savage Time." It's been too long since i've seen a good Vandal Savage story.

The Avengers had Ultron.

I wouldnt consider Vandal Savage as the main JLA villain. He's never really fought them in the comics and wouldnt be that much of a challenge if he did. Someone like Despero is alot higher on the list as far as The JLA's main enemys.

It's not Darkseid?

So? They had Kang too. Somehow Ultron isn't as mighty as compared to Thanos and Dr. Doom. He seems almost small-time in comparison.

The way I see it, the JL are too great to be confined to one major archenemy. Darkseid and the Injustice League come close though.

Nope, the League (as a group) has almost never fought Darkseid. The only times I can remember them doing so were:

(1) during the JLA/JSA/New Gods teamup and
(2) during the Rock of Ages story, with a JLA team (Green Arrow and the Atom) in the future fighting Darkseid.

Heck, the Legion of Superheroes has fought Darkseid twice, but he's not really their archenemy either. He's a New Gods enemy and an enemy of the entire DC Universe, but not really a JLA enemy.

While Vandal Savage is a great villain, I've reevaluated my opinion and decided that he is just a great villain of the DCU, kind of like Darkseid. However, I do believe the greatest JL villains (archenemies if you will) are the Injustice Gang and Amazo.

During Morrison's run he also introduced Solaris as a villain of the JLA and I think was supposed to be Superman's greatest enemy in the future in the story DC One Million. Vandal Savage was also involved in that story.

As for the villain that would be their archenemy it would be the Injustice Gang, maybe Amazo, and the way both Morrison and Waid handled them the White Martians are a real threat. I'd like to see them every once in a while giving the JLA problems. Despero also has given the League some problems over the years except in the newest Morrison/Waid/Kelly run. He's due to show up.

Darkseid, Vandal Savage, Mongul, Ra's al Ghul are threats but they also are specific heros' archenemies so they aren't only confined to fighting the JLA but have given them a run for their money on occasion. Now that I think of it Vandal Savage formed his own "Injustice Gang" that went and fought the Titans. Well, enough of my rambling.

That's right. They were known as "Tartarus." There was an opposite number for each member of the Titans. And Vandal Savage was pretty much set up to be Arsenal's main villain.

Yeah that was the name of the team. Thanks Toddman. Couldn't think of the name when I was posting.
