View Full Version : RUMOR: Reggie's "big Wii game" is Donkey Kong Country 4
http://dkvine.com/index.php?n=00510
“I had my friend at Nintendo check around for any mention of big games, and per their investigation, the new game announcement is Donkey Kong Country, in 2D! Yes, it is going back to its SNES roots. This … will expand one of their popular franchises, as they mentioned several months ago.”
If this is true, then wow. I was expecting Kid Icarus, but given the possibility that Factor 5 will try to make it edgy, I'd actually prefer this.
...
If this is true, I'm going to wet my pants with joy, drink a lot of water, then wet my pants with joy again.
Still, even if it's true, it kind of worries me. RARE seems like the only company fit to make the game, considering they made the first three, but they arguably haven't made a good game since Banjo-Tooie, and DK64 sucked, so it's kind of worrisome either way.

Please make Donkey Kong playable in this.
What? He's hasn't been in a playable DKC title since # 1.

I hope this happens. I really, REALLY, do.

Please let this be true. I need a few more games to justify my purchase of the Wii and this could do it. Even without Rare, the basic formula is there-barrel blast, mine cart levels, and ride animals, so I'd say that's a pretty hard formula to screw up.

Hopefully PAON will be doing this.
Oh man, I'm so excited, given that this is true.

Wow, was DK64 really that bad? I didn't play it that much, but from what I remember it wasn't that bad, just different from the SNES games.

As long as the scale is upped considerably, I'm all for it. I mean, if they just make a SNES game and put it on the Wii, I won't be a fan... but a big, BIG game with DK, Diddy, and possibly even Dixie for some levels seems pretty awesome.
Assuming this is true, along with the new Wario Land, Nintendo seems to be looking into more sidescrollers. Which is good, as I generally prefer them to 3D platformers.

If this is true, then its great seeing DK go back to platforming. I've had enough of the music-themed DK games, thank you very much.

Exactly. It was okay for a 3D platformer, but compared to the spectacular Country trilogy, it was...well, pretty bad.
Nah, I'd say it's like this:
DKC2 > DKC > DK64 >>>>>>>>> DKC3
But I'd be all for a DKC4. I just hope they let you play with Donkey, Diddy, and maybe Dixie as well. This series' return is long overdue.

Huh, I liked DKC3. While the lack on Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong sucked, I thought it was still a solid game that raised the difficulty from the previous two games.

Huh, for a long time, i thought the 3rd game was the nail in the coffin on the DKC series. I guess since Rare got to digging around and reopened it up were like "Ah, we can make it work."
I wasnt too impressed with the third game at all, i absolutely loved the first one, as well as the second. This should be interesting...

My feeling is that DKC3, Dixie Kong's Double Trouble was the Return of the Jedi of the DKC trilogy. A DKC game in which neither Donkey nor Diddy were playable didn't sit right with me, and Kiddy Kong was basically a lame version of Donkey. DK64 may have been an OK game, but it was too difficult and the levels were way too long.
If this rumor about a DKC4 is indeed true, here's hoping that Donkey Kong will at last be a playable character in DKC again, and if both Diddy and Dixie are in this one as well, bonus.
Huh, I liked DKC3. While the lack on Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong sucked, I thought it was still a solid game that raised the difficulty from the previous two games. And yet, oddly enough, I got further in DKC3 than I did in the other two DKC games (though mainly because my copy of DKC1 was stolen before I could finish it and I never replaced it).
DKC64 was OK, but it was unremarkable and had WAY too much crap to collect.

I just hope this DKC4 won't follow up on DKC3 in terms of the art work. I really disliked the change of design for the enemies, and as beautiful as some of the backgrounds looked in DKC3 it just....felt out of place.
On a side note, here's hoping Donkey and Diddy will make a return.

Really? I've always hated Rare's character designs. Especially K. Rool.

DKC3 isn't a BAD game, but after the standards set by the first two games, it definitely felt like a letdown. I had no problem with the main characters, as I've always though Dixie was awesome and Kiddy wasn't that bad (even though I would say he's the worst of all Kongs).
Perhaps what I hate the most about the game is the DK Coin challenge. I wouldn't even call it a challenge. Because they moved the DK Coin to being hidden anywhere to have a specific enemy hold it, it became limited as to where they could place them. This was pretty obvious in water levels, where Koin was always in a pretty obvious ledge or at the very end of the level.
The Animal Barrels were also overused. There's an Enguarde barrel in stage 1-3. Uh, why? Why not add a box so you can have some actual challenge. All Engaurde is good for in that stage is to access a bonus level. DKC3 also lacks Rambi. Rambi rocks. No Rambi = fail.
I give the game credit for having some very well-designed levels and, despite being easier than the previous two, the challenge was still decent. Whoever designed Lightning Look-Out deserves any praise they get.

I've been thinking, and if this rumor is true, and they add some gimmicky motion based controls to the game, I'll be a bit upset. The DKC series, especially when you get to the later levels, requires almost perfect timing and precision and waggling the wiimote just isn't going to give it to you. And tilting the wiimote left or right to ride a minecart would be extrememly lame. I'm not saying this is what's going to happen, but if it did, it would hurt a potentially great game.
And I loved DK64. Just went back and beat it completely a month ago. What everyone hates about it makes it awesome-absolutely gigantic levels and tons of stuff to do in them(or collect, but not all items are required and you don't even need to collect 100% of the required ones anyway). It takes everything that made Banjo Kazooie and Super Mario 64 awesome and mulitplies it by ten.

*shrug* I was hoping the next 'big Wii game' was something more... original.
Regardless, I'll wait until I see if this is the case before I start tossing myself off with glee.

That sounds about right. I personally consider DKC2 to be one of the greatest games ever made, so it wasn't much of a surprise they couldn't top it.

I never played DK64.
DKC3 was a bit of a step down from DKC2, but I still found it enjoyable. The overall difficulty was toned down and there wasn't a strong theme throughout the game. But when DKC3 went outside the box for some of it's levels, that is when it surpasses DKC2 (stuff like Hot-Shot Croc, K3's boss fight, etc.)

If there is indeed a DKC4 and the original cast is re-assembled, here's hoping that Nintendo either has Wrinkly Kong alive again or simply retcons her character out of existence. The 'making Wrinkly a ghost' thing in DK64 creeped me the heck out!

Assuming it were the same quality as the first three games, DKC4 would be yet another reason to get me to buy a Wii, right after Super Paper Mario, Mario Galaxy, Wii Sports, and Mario Kart Wii.
BTW, I liked DKC3, though like many here, not quite as much as the first two. Though I will say it had some of the most creative levels in the series.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who felt that way. Rare seemed to be on a death kick around that time, what with Wrinkly dying, Bottles from B-T dying, hoardes of Jinjos being wiped out...they should've just wrote Wrinkly out of the story instead of...well, killing her off, in a sense. Now she's just a regular cast member who everyone interacts with as if she's still alive. Might as well have kept her alive. :\
It will be interesting to see how this turns out, if true. We're overdo for a new Donkey Kong game that doesn't involve playing bongos or racing.
Anyway, how I feel about the DKC series is:
DKC2 >>>>> DKC1 >>>>>>>>>> DKC3 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> DK64
DKC3 wasn't a bad game, but compared the other games in the series, it felt very lackluster. The level design wasn't as good as the first two games, nor was the soundtrack.
DK64 was Banjo-Kazooie, only they split Banjo's moves into five different characters and multiplied the collecting by ten. It had great graphics and a fantastic soundtrack, but other than that and the badass known as Lanky Kong, DK64 was a complete disappointment.

Also, I don't know why people are worried, this is a first party Nintendo title. There's a very low chance of them blowing it.

Conker is easily my favorite Rare N64 game, but I like Banjo as well. DK64, though? Yeah, didn't care for that one.

What I'm most concerned about is: the humor. I enjoyed the humor of Rare's DKC titles; the best part of DK64 was that it was their funniest one. It wasn't enough to save it, but it was still funny.
In the Japanese-made DK titles, the humor just hasn't been there. Cranky isn't cranky enough. I really hope a Western developer gets this job.

Speaking as someone whose sole experience with the series is some frustrating times recently trying to beat the first mine cart level of DKC1, I'd appreciate it if a sequel had a much lower difficulty (or at least made it harder to die so quickly).
Also, this may displease purists, but I'd love to see a Donkey Kong game take place in the city again, like the original arcade game. It seems DK's been stuck in the jungle for every damn title for 14 years, and it'd be a nice 80s call-back.

They could...leave the jungle.
I never got around to the Mario vs. DK games, but you're right, they do have a bit of the arcade feel in it (including Pauline, which was a nice random touch). I'm more thinking aesthetically, and having a DK game based on the art I've seen on all the old arcade flyers and cabinets for the original game would be really interesting to me.
I've always felt that the DKC games were overrated. They were strong platformers but weren't the incredible, face-melting games that some people make them out to be. If Nintendo makes another DK platformer, I want Miyamoto's team to be in charge.

I've thought this as well, but I hesitate to pass a final judgment considering I've only played through the first game in the series. I suppose I could pick up the others through VC and see if my opinion changes.....
Personally, I think they should let DKC rest in peace. The fans of the series have put the games on so high a pedestal that I can't imagine anything but bitter disappointment in store for them if a fourth installment is attempted. The Wii is an entirely different beast from the SNES and it seems like a given that the game's creators will try to build on the original concept in order to make use of the Wii's unique traits. This will undoubtedly irritate the die hard fans who probably want nothing more than another side-scrolling platformer created in the mold of the earlier games.
And I think that a DKC4 would be better suited for the DS anyway. A 2D, SNES-style platformer wouldn't fit on the Wii, but that sort of thing works great on the DS.
