I still don't have the first set because of money issues, I also live in Britain and it's not too cheap for an import. let it looks brilliant, I'm actually looking forward to vol 4 since there's some really neat cartoons with animation and colours in them, I still love the early cartoons for how bizzare they are.

Vols. 1 and 2 both have the color Popeye shorts that the Fleischers did, which were mostly Popeye re-enacting the Arabian Nights. Is there even going to be a volume 4? I thought the Popeye the Sailor DVD boxes were just supposed to be the Fleischer Bros. cartoons. Vol. 4 would start the Famous Studios stuff, which I was led to believe was competent, but nowhere near as good as the Fleischer stuff.
I just reviewed the vol. 2 set (and the craptastic Popeye & Friends Vol 1), so keep an eye out for it on Toon Zone News (http://news.toonzone.net/).

I'll definitely be buying Volume 2 and Volume 3, and any other Popeye set that comes out after that.
I definitely will not be buying the Popeye & Friends DVD. That "Popeye & Son" show is not great in any way. I might buy them if some of the better Hanna-Barbera Popeyes are on them in the future.

I thought WB was going to release all the *classic* Popeye stuff up the beginning up the Hanna Barbera years in the volume sets.
I think WB might be testing the waters with the "& Friends" releases, just to see if they'll be worth releasing in full volume form once all the shorts are released.
I just wonder if the 'Olive in the Army' shorts will warrant their own release, because those were admittedly the best shorts of the HB Popeye years.

Apparently Popeye & Friends vol. 2 is cancelled. (http://news.toonzone.net/article.php?ID=25498) As long as they keep the classic Popeye going, I don't mind this, though I'm sure some aren't going to be pleased...

Thank goodness. Popeye & Friends Vol. 1 was abysmally bad, especially when compared to the Fleischer cartoons. Anybody who's displeased by this news must be either related to someone on the production or has a terminal case of "lack-of-taste-itis."
Now, if they revised these things so that they were like the Looney Tunes Spotlight Collections that culled a few highlights from the Popeye the Sailor DVDs, THAT would be a different story...

i don't really have an opinion on this because the cartoons weren't the greatest in the world. the only real problem i had w/ the first volume was that the prints of the cartoons were SO bad. it looked like a really bad rush job, so if they were going to keep doing that i'm glad that they canceled them.

Well, for completists's sake, I hope that WB releases those HB series in full sets after the classic shorts are done. They weren't the greatest cartoons from the HB vault, but I'd still like to at least see them get a full release.

Or wants to collect these cartoons (I was considering it, as I'm beginning to build a DVD collection of 80's cartoons).

For those who bought Vol. 1, does it include the original opening/end credits, or is it just 8 standalone cartoons?

Well, OK, there's that too, but...can't you change it to GOOD 80's cartoons? There are some things that are really better off forgotten :p.

Full opening and closing credits for all the cartoons on Vol. 1.
