According to animeondvd.com, PiQ, formerly known as NewTypeUSA, is now good and dead. The July issue is the last one.

Huh.

That didn't last long.

Yeah, that crashed and burned...I'm very regretful about this, this is likely the end of magazine production coming from ADV. The people behind Newtype created a fantastic magazine, and now they're likely out of a job.

Wow, that was faster than I expected.

ADV does DVDs well. They really need to stick to that.

Ouch.

I see people were bitter over Tim and Eric in the first issue, but...wow. 3 issues? That's gotta be a record.

It seemed pretty decent too...it wasn't watered down to the point of sucking, and at least the non-anime stuff they got into was mostly worthwhile. Battlestar Galactica, Wall-E, etc.

To be honest, I don't mis it, as I thought the magazine was lack luster. NewType was great, we got awesome pictures of series that were not even in America yet, and then when they brought PiQ, they not only got rid of all of the unlicensed stuff, but the magazine became about other stuff that wasn't anime. Seriously, WHY was Battlestar Galatica or Heroes talked about in a magazine that is supposed to be about anime? On the downside, this has to be terrible news for people who subscribed to NewType. Not only did they get forced with a subscription to a magazine they didn't want or know about, but now they pretty much threw their money into the trash.

To quote the Green Goblin from the first Spidey flick...
"God speed Spider-Man..!"

I was never a fan of Newtype, mostly because their reviews were hack jobs that called even the most mediocre fanservice turd "a rollicking good time!!!"

Though it's sad when people lose their jobs, this is good news for former PiQ/Newtype readers, who now have a chance to subscribe to Otaku USA (http://www.otakuusamagazine.com/), which is everything Newtype should have been and more.

I haven't read Otaku USA yet, but I was annoyed by how closely their cover resembled Newtype's at times. Hopefully what's inside is far more original.

It is. Particularly in their music and film sections they sometimes have information that you literally cannot find in English anywhere else (online included). And they have a genuine review staff that won't call cookie-cutter dreck God's gift to manga fans. They are genuine otaku, in the Japanese sense of better-informed on a particular topic than anyone else and not afraid to share that knowledge at an advanced level. Just open a copy of Otaku USA next to a copy of Newtype. One is full of text with some pictures. The other is full of pictures with little paragraphs of text in the corner.

Good to know, I'll give it a shot. I've been wanting a good magazine to replace NTUSA; I'm thinking I'll compare it against Protoculture Addicts and make a choice.

I picked up an issue of Otaku USA a little while ago and it wasn't all that good. Then again, I've never read an issue of Newtype or PiQ, so I can't really compare.

To some people, those large pictures were the selling point.

I picked up the first issue of PiQ cuz I was bored and needed something to read. I found only about 40% of the book relevant to my interests and have'nt picked it up again.
