Does anyone really know which ones exist and which ones are lost? I do know that Toby in the Museum, Toby the Milkman, and Toby In Circus Time exist; and Halloween and Down South were recently discovered (with German subtitles)-- This does not include Goopy Geer's copy; Toby the Milkman, IIRC, was the first one to be discovered and long thought to be the only one in existance. Hopefully, we'll be able to find a few more sometime soon! :bosko:

Kent~

Actually "Toby In The Museum" was discovered quite a while back. My copy of it is on a tape from Snappy Video, which I bought back around 1988-89. EXTREMELY Fleischer-esque would describe it in a nutshell...

I've just got the digital copies of Down South, Toby the Milkman, and Halloween that Goopy has on his server. (Thanks, Goopy! These ain't perfect, but they look pretty good on VCD!)

I'm amazed that so many of the Toby 'toons are simply missing and perhaps presumed lost forever! I hope we can continue finding them.

Mike~

Many, many of the cartoons, shorts and features of the Twenties (and some later) were simply given up on long ago! Some Laurel & Hardy shorts and a their co-starring color-feature "Rogue's Song" amongst them... Cartoons are singular among film genres to have so few that remain authentically lost. Now if somebody can just find those two proto-Dr. Seuss toons from 1930 that I've been looking for twenty plus years (ditto for Beck and all the others).

Tim: Well, I've always loved cartoons, but I've spent the past several years almost exclusively watching and commenting on Japanese anime. (I've got a little website about it, URL in the sig!) Since most anime is less than 50 years old, very little of it is actually "lost"-- some of the earliest Japanese Astroboy episodes are missing (such that English-language episodes are going to be aired in Japan, with Japanese subtitles, in a few months!). But even Japanese war propaganda cartoons (most notably "Momotaro, Holy Warrior of the Sea") are still fairly easy to dig up.

Some of the earliest TV anime, like "Tetsujin 28" (Gigantor) and "Eight Man" (Tobor the 8th Man) are already available on DVD in Japan, with surprisingly good transfers! Even other old black-and-white fare, like "Wonder 3" (The Amazing Three), was released on laserdisc in the past few years.

Among anime fans in the US, the biggest complaint is usually when a show gets edited or altered for US release. Thing is, the Japanese version STILL EXISTS. So the idea of these cartoons simply being GONE, that's it, MISSING-- is surprising to me.

It's unfortunate. But I hope we can continue finding them-- I'm sure that there's still some Toby reels out there, waiting to be found!

I have the Snappy Video print as well, and yes it is VERY Fleischer-esque!
