Space Ghost Coast to Coast is probably the longest-running show in the history of Cartoon Network. It was well-loved for many years, especially among older viewers, as the show continually pushed the envelope for the network as the years went by.

Then Adult Swim came. It seemed like the perfect opportunity for the Ghost to spread his wings, so to speak, and finally break free of it's "family friendly" boundaries.

Unfortunately, it never really had a chance. Coast to Coast only aired thirteen measly new episodes on Adult Swim (15 if you count the extra 2 Mommentary episodes) before finally being put to rest.

Do you think Coast to Coast was done in too easily? Did the show have any life left when it came to Adult Swim? What are your opinions?

You could tell they were getting really tired of the show. Take "Flipmode" and the Triumph episode as examples. If that was what SGC2C (and looking at later shows like 12 Oz. Mouse and Squidbillies, Williams Street in general) was devolving into, I'm glad the plug was pulled.

I heard from someone who read an article or something of the sort with a person from Williams Street simply implying they were moving on. If that's the case, then I respect it. I wouldn't want to make content that I didn't enjoy making, because you can usually tell when the creators' hearts aren't in it.

It'd still be nice to have the last three seasons on DVD though. :crying:

well, considering how the voice of Space Ghost and Brak went to The Brak Show, it made sense.

They should make some webisodes though, since those would be pretty cheap compared to 12 oz mouse/brak show

Was Space Ghost ever really given the chance at good ratings? It seems to me, that the show always aired in a pretty late slot, if I'm not mistaken. Granted, I was a bit younger when the show was originally on, and Midnight was a lot later then, than it is now. :p

Had Space Ghost been given the chance at the 10:00 slot (this is coming from the Central Time Zone, where [as] begins at 10), do you believe that would have helped? Perhaps the strange antics would have done better at a time like that?

The problem was that by the time that Coast to Coast began airing on [adult swim], the show had already passed its' creative peak. The really good SG:C2C episodes aired while the show was part of Cartoon Network. For much of the [as] shows, they were clearly just going through the motions.

And this opinion is coming from a huge fan of the show.

I personally thought the cancellation was for the best. Compared to the original seasons, the Adult Swim season was terrible. I think Williams Street was too focused on their other future productions for this new block that they knew it was time to let their old baby go, and I don't blame them for that.

One thing that annoyed me about the later SG episodes is the way guests were shoehorned into the show. After a while the guests started to feel like afterthoughts brought on to watch the chaos unfold. The witty banter between SG and the guests was diminished or lost entirely.

While the show was always very random, there has to be some sort of control to the randomness, if that makes sense. The 1998 season pulled this off very successfully; anything after 2001, not so much.

I thought the AS episodes were basically fine, "Dreams" (the Triumph episode) and maybe "The Justice Hole" were the only one I would consider bad. "Flipmode" likely wouldn't be good if the individual gags and writing weren't so good, but they are and it rules.

Rather than continue with new episodes of SGC2C, I'd rather have more cameos of Space Ghost in Adult Swim promos, and shows. I loved his various guest appearances in PHF, and I also loved the commercial where Space Ghost interviewed Tom and the Mayor.

I have to agree. "Flipmode" is one of my favorite episodes along with "Kentucky Nightmare" and "Knifin' Around" just to name a few.

It annoys me that none of those have yet to make it to DVD.

The only good Adult Swim episodes were "Flipmode", "Knifin' Around", "Kentucky Nightmare" and "Whipping Post" (on the latter, Brak's presence barely saves it). Matt Harrigan murdered it in the final season. Utter crap like "Idlewild South" and "Dreams" were his making.

Also, the show's VERY early episodes ("Elevator", "Spanish Translation", "Gilligan" and "CHiPS") pale in comparison to the rest of the CN run. Classics like "Bobcat", "Banjo", "Batmantis", "Fire Drill", "Freak Show", "Late Show", "Cookout", "Boobookitty", and "Pavement" among others made the show so watchable. To see what it stooped to in its final year is just sad.

The show was already on the air for EIGHT YEARS before adult swim had it's first night of programming. Most of the original writing crew was split between Aqua Teens, the Brak Show, and launching the AS network. Considering the show has had 13 episodes in 6 years-I'd consider it done before it even came to AS. The new-er episodes really aren't that different from the 1998-1999 episodes (fireant, king dead) in terms of wackiness. They had already long since tired of the classic format of SG- (interview guests with nonsense questions and then play responses that don't match up).

The first episode had seinfeld references-BEFORE the show was popular-and a 20 year old ashley judd. This show has been on ALONG TIME

**for those who were too young to remember, if i recall correctly, the show initially would pop up randomly running anywhere from 15-20 minutes and then followed by a classic sg cartoon. I think it would come on around 9? when it popped up. Season 3 was when they focused on making SG an actual show with an actual season and I think that premiered at 11.
