For all of the Jews out there in TZ land, Happy Purim! Hope you drink responsibly, eat lots of Hamantashen, and have a great time!

For those of you wondering, Purim...like a number of Jewish holidays...celebrates how the bad ppl tried to kill all of the Jews, didn't, and now we're gonna eat! =D

Aw, c'mon! We said Merry Christmas to you guys! :D

Yup! Purim is a time to feast, be happy, and get so drunk, you don't know the difference between the bad guys and the good guys! Heck, you don't know you're own name, much less their names! :p

So.........ah........who wants to send me a gift? :D

Hey, you've already had 12 nights of gifts! Anyway, yeah, happy Purim. After reading your description of it I might just celebrate myself.

My fouth ex celebrates Jewish holidays, although she is't technically Jewish or a convert. Her take on it is, if not for Catholic antiSemitism in the Middle Ages , we'd all be celebrating such things as Rosh Hashana and Hannukah more widely. I-iiii-iii-ii-interesting logic. I suppose I should drop her a line and see what she's up to these days.
Though that name--sounds like either a diet drink or something you feed a puppy.... ;)
Danielle--if you want a gift, click my website and pick your own. We have a lovely special this month on peanut butter nutrition bars, and I'm pretty sure they're kosher-friendly.... :D

Is it Purim today? When I was in college, the Jewish kids threw a big Purim party for everyone, with a keg of beer and several jugs of Meneshevitz. Then someone would shout out "Mortichi" or "Hamen" and we would cheer or boo respectively until we pretended to forgot who to cheer and boo for. Heh maybe I'll seek out some cheap, sugar-sweetened wine tonight.

Yup, tis lots of fun!

For those of you who want a more indepth story, it's basically the Book of Esther...which I believe is also in the Christian Bible, available everywhere....=O

I thought that Jews weren't allowed to drink, period. I'm obviously wrong here, but that's what I was told by a few Jewish friends of mine. Can they only drink on Purim, or can they drink whenever, like Christians? Or does it depend on what denomination of Judaism you belong to?

What's the backstory on Purim? I don't know anything about it. Teach me, please! :)

Squall's qery makes a great segue into mine--dietary restrictions. Is the rule about Jews being prohibited from eating pork still practiced, or is it out of date (llike Catholics and meat on Fridays)? As for drinking, well, that's mostly the Catholics again--other Christian denominations, like Lutherans, lean more towards temperance....
