Ok Ok, rabid fangirl as I am, I thought this place could use an Ouran thread since today is the day that Funimation promised to release infomation on the series.

From their website:
"School may be out for summer vacation - but the summer session has begun at FUNimation Entertainment! Ouran High School Host Club studio sessions, that is! Expect news from OHSHC starting May 30th!"

THEN: http://www.funimation.com/f_index.cfm?page=news

"FUNimation will announce two cast members every Friday via www.funimation.com/ouran (http://www.funimation.com/ouran) all the way up to Anime Expo, with a main cast announcement at the con."

Post your ideas and thoughts, wishes, wantings, hopes- anything Ouran related. I hope that they really put alot of effort into this series so~
Anybody have some voice actors in mind? We know ONE so far.

Plus he's expressed numerous times he wants to play Tamaki.

Thinking about it now, I'm not as opposed to it as I was before. Vic's got the stuff to be a good Tamaki, expecially if they keep all of his crazy eccentricities. Honestly though, I can't see [I]anybody being as good of a Tamaki as the original, just because the entire Japanese cast was voiced so perfectly. I think that's why I'm worried.

As for Sonny being Haruhi's dad, if he pulls a Maes Hughes on us I think it'll turn out brilliant.

A release date! What about a release date?

So many people had their hopes up that that's what we would hear about today. Frankly I'm not focused on, nor do I care too much about the English cast right now. I just want them to throw us a bone, even a VAGUE bone, as to when we can expect it to be out.

I think Funi wants to torture me.

As much as I love him, I dunno if he could pull off Tamaki... Tamaki's just so... Tamaki. Lol! I can't really imagine anyone other than Mamoru Miyano voicing him.

I, Samantha Vi Fangirl the IV, command you to go watch Ouran!
But seriously, it's the type of show that is so unlike anything else. It's genuinely funny with out trying too hard to be. It's got a touch of romance yet still remains absolutly hilarious [ala the episode with Tamaki and Haruhi together during the storm/ the other club members reactions XD]
It's something that if you watch one episode of you want to immediately watch more. Ouran breaks the mold of the shows that try to be like it and fail. *waves flag*

Actually he was doing Vincent I think but it wasn't very good anyway. Steve's Ed doesn't really sound like Vic's but his Orochimaru kinda sounds like Vic doing an evil voice. But they could match eachother's pitch for sure and that's really all you need. But I'd really rather have the twins voiced by Jerry Jewell and Todd Habercorn.

Early accidental VA release - I read a report at Anime on DVD's board that Sonny mentioned he had the part at a recent convention. My guess is Sonny didn't know he wasn't suppose to be saying anything yet (they're doing a big VA announcement thing starting tomorrow at Funi for the show) and goofed.

As to Aaron Dismuke voice changing - I take it a lot of people in the thread missed Trinty Blood, because it changed during the recording for that show (goodness that poor kid's voice was peeling paint in a few episodes with the cracking! :D ). Now I haven't heard his part in Mushishi (how was it? can anyone say what they thought of it??) but I did hear him in a S1 episode of Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle. His voice sounded really good! :) He isn't going to be playing little kids anymore but I actually did think of Ouran Host Club as a potential place for him to show up because of hearing him in that show (his voice does fall into young male romantic anime lead IMO).

I KNEW Vic would be Tamaki! It was up in the air for a long time but I think most of us had a good idea that it would end up being him. Looking at his performance as Ed Elric, it's obvious that he can hit the serious emotions as well as the crazy ones. I used to be against him playing this role, but I don't know anybody else who can even come close to matching the original. I don't know Kyouya's VA very well, but Greg Ayres is going to make a wonderful Kaoru. I'm a little upset Momiji's VA isn't also voicing Honey, but I trust Funi with this one.
I cross my fingers for Glass as Haruhi. I was a little shocked.

Kuroba

I'm not sure if Momiji's VA works with the company anymore, but Luci Christian will do a great job, I'm sure. While not many can come close to Ayaka Saito brand cuteness, she can do some really adorable voices.

Kyoya and Hikaru's VAs are in xxxHolic and they've been impressing me a lot. I'm especially excited about Todd Haberkorn playing Hikaru (since Hikaru is my 2nd favorite host). XD He's good at spazzing out. And Greg Ayres will be awesome as Kaoru.

My turn to contribute now. :p Besides the main cast announcement, there are two other cast members announced:

Mike McFarland (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=1122) - Ranka Fujioka
Patrick Seitz (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=7108) - Umehito Nekozawa

and according to Anime News Network (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2008-07-04/funimation-announces-ouran-high-school-host-club-cast), Funi will be releasing Ouran in 2 13-episode boxes, with the first one coming in October.

Many screams for Ouran High School Host Club of course, part one October 28th for $59.98. Part two is due out January 6th with 14-26, also $59.98. There’ll be actors commentary, manga pages, and outtakes as well. (No swag? After all this time? Aw…)Dang it, Funi, $60 for each boxset? I think the dub cast worked great, specifically Tamaki and the twins but Tamaki as expected steals the spotlight. As for Haruhi, I'm still getting used to her voice but I can understand why it would sound the way it is. It does fit her personality so something tells me I'll come to like it the more Hostclub I watch.

As for the opening and the ending songs, I actually liked Sakura Kiss but I'm not too fond of the singers for Shissou; it's too high pitched and the chorus gets awkward in sync.

I didn't think the dubbed OP and ED were all that wonderful, though. The Japanese version of "Sakura Kiss" was definitely much more energetic. But I tend to skip over the OP and ED anyway, so it's not a big deal to me.

Can't wait for the set to be released.

So, Haruhi's apparently become a popular name to use in Japanese fiction?

Anyway, Vic Mignogna was pretty good as Tamaki. Haruhi and the twins sounded okay. Kyouya sounded a little too old. Overall, I liked it.

Just rewatched the episodes for the first time since this Summer just to see a bit of the dub in advance, and for the most part, I'm impressed. Haruhi didn't wow me at first, but her VA seemed to become more natural at her role as the next episode went on, and the rest of the cast do their jobs well.

Yeah, I thought all of the dub acting was really natural. It was awesome. The boys fit their roles and are just hilarious, whereas Haruhi is clearly the avatar of sanity amidst the nuttiness that is the host club.

Call me a sappy romantic, but episode 2 was pretty sweet with the way that the group was playing matchmaker.

I can't say the first two episodes made me LOL, but it's definitely a cute series with an appealing art style that thankfully doesn't take itself very seriously. I can see why it has a fanbase.

Some moments I liked:
-"I'm afraid if I drink this, my father will yell at me"
-"How did you go from that to THAT?!"
-Love-Love
-Some of Hani's antics
-A literal arrow through the heart when "That was pretty selfish of you" was said
-Accidental girl-girl kiss

Wouldn't object to seeing more. :)

Well, I did see some of the 1st episode dubbed before at the New York Anime Festival, but unfortunately the room was so crowded with squeeing fangirls that I just wasn't able to watch properly. So seeing the 1st two episodes dubbed in private was very nice and so far I like this series. It seems very fun. Tamaki is definitely my favorite character so far, he's just so hilarious. On a side note, is it me, or does J. Michael Tatum sound a lot like Crispin Freeman? Aftering hearing him voice Enel and Pearl in One Piece and now Kyoya in Ouran, I've been noticing the similarity in voice style.

My favorite character out of this was "Honey-Sempai" He was cute/hilarious... "Eat Cake." :sit in depression with his stuffed bunny: My least favorite are the twins... yeah I have the feeling they could grow on me, but I just don't like them at the moment, that and I found them annoying. Then again I guess it could be me not liking the twins arch-type, compared to Honey where I kind of like that kind of personality in most forms of media.

One weird things I noticed was them using honorifics. Forgive for a moment, but I am not used to seeing/hearing a dub that uses honorifics. It was a nice change, especially since before watching this, I watched the Episodes of One Piece where Johnny and Yosaku appeared, and called Zoro and everyone else Big Bro.

I can see by our avatar.:anime: Honey could be on my list of favorite character, though, he does have some stiff competition, especially for his arch-type. Twin are funny, like I said they might need some time to grow on me. Though I think it going to be that one shtick that will get on my nerve, IE them coming on to each other. I just don't think by the time this series is over, I will be their biggest fan or anything.

Yeah, well... Ouran wouldn't be the same without them.

Well I guess you might be right for that matter. I just find it weird that they are using them. I'm sure some other dubs use them, but this is my first time that I remember or pay attention to and noticed them that aren't just Mr, Ms. or just the word Sensei. I mean I noticed them in certain manga's, just not dubbed anime.

Then again I guess it could be me not liking the twins arch-type, compared to Honey where I kind of like that kind of personality in most forms of media. NUUUUU The twins are awesome! I think that they definitively have the ability to grow on you, because they aren't just 'oh let us act like incestuous yaoi brothers all the time!' (although you won't hear me complaining about that XD). There's alot of back story there. On top of that, their dub voices are SO dead on it's scary.

GAH I know. It's going to be hard getting used to but I'm glad they kept them all in there because most of it is important to the dub. 'Honey Sempai' especially because Honey is actually older than all of them and unless they openly said it- you'd never know.

If you haven't watched this series yet, now is the PERFECT time to do it. SO GO GO GO. Buy it right now! The later episodes are nothing but amazing.

Don't worry about it-- I'm pretty sure FUNI's going to give us the option to listen to the original Japanese OP/ED. I wasn't thrilled with the dubbed songs either, but I do appreciate the effort...I'm just too used to the originals, I guess.

I think the dub cast was rather good. Haruhi's VA took a little while to get used to, but by the end of the episode, she seemed like a good fit. Don't have any problems with the hosts...particularly with Hunny, who still sounds so very cute. ^_^

It will be way less expensive that way.

Meanwhile, even though I've not seen the original Japanese, that was some of Funi's weaker dub music work. The dub itself, in terms of "it is it listenable enough to play on TV" gets a A+ from me. It's very smooth and emotive, yet it doesn't lose the comedic timing at all.

I just can't believe that the company that put 28-episode sets of Yu Yu Hakusho out for less than $30 are releasing a 13-episode-set of Ouran for $55. Hopefully either I'll be in some MAJOR money come the end of the month, or the price will drop.

Juu-kuchi
10-11-2008, 08:08 PM
Well do remember that Ouran is a relatively newer property than YYH so they want to probably get their money's worth for the new property for that Ouran-shaped niche that is the fans. YYH on the other hand is much older, and compared to Ouran must more noticeable and regarded in some sense as a classic, especially when spoken to those who had yet to see it, but didn't have the money to spend on the previous individual and box releases. So those who are YYH fans who could not afford the original releases can now get it for cheap as well as others who would like to get a good feel of the series but not pay up the arse for so little content for a 112-episode series.

Or at least that's what my vague idea of business tells me.

Besides, isn't Yu Yu Haksuho is it's 3rd or 4th re-release? FUNimation has earned their money back from that license several times over by now. With Ouran, they have to make a profit on just 2 sets when just a couple years ago, it would have been released on anywhere from 4-8 singles.

Anyway, after watching the first two episodes, I MUST HAVE IT. What a hilarious show, and Honey is so adorable it that it ought to be illegal.

Bingo. Funi's paid off the Hakusho license repeatedly.

Meanwhile with Ouran and a lot of these new series, instead of getting somewhere between 160 and 200 dollars for 24-26 episodes, they're only hitting the viewer up for 120. That's a better deal than the old days for starters. Besides, if you're a patient, patient person, well, then you know Funi will eventually do atleast one if not a couple different variations on complete series boxsets at progressively lower price points. One will be able to pick up the whole of Ouran for a $60 MSRP or less... 2 or 3 years from now.

Though after pre-order, it going to cost $55. What the hell... One Piece Boxset doesn't cost that much, it $40 bucks at Best Buy then and we get the same amount of episodes in that Boxset that Ouran getting. Then again, I guess the series length plays into effect. 300+ and going compared to 26 episodes I think we're dealing with.

My sister used to be madly in love with Ed Elric. Then a month ago she decided she was "over" Ed and now in love with Tamaki.

So last night I started watching the dub preview of Ouran. When I told my sister, she wanted to hear what people sounded like. So when I pulled out my headphones, guess who was speaking but Vic Mignona as Tamaki. She then went into a cursing rampage about how this dub is "nothing like how I imagined them to sound" and how she wants to "kill FUNimation".

Personally I think she hasn't yet gotten over me calling Vic Mignona her "boyfriend" in front of his autograph table at ComicCon.

I can never figure out that mentality - if you don't like the dub, just leave it in Japanese. Most anime DVD's come with duel language tracks. *scratches head*
