Sounds like a giant bucket of fun. Maybe not quite as serious as the giant robot fighting in Armored Trooper VOTOMS, but also doesn't sound like it's aiming to be.
Also, most high school drama shows on both sides of the Pacific would be vastly improved with the addition of copious amounts of blood, violence, and giant robots fighting.

Excellent review, especially coming from someone who apparently doesn't like mecha. I fully agree about the action, the quality is top-notch. This show fuses robots and military elements as well as anything. I like the cast too, although I think Gauron from the original Full Metal Panic series was much more menacing than the simply unhinged Gates. I'm also not a fan of the ninja lesbian twins. They were awesome adversaries, but rather blank as characters.
This series had a perfect first episode, followed by a weak second episode, followed by eleven more great episodes. Definitely worth anyone's time.

Great series. You actually care about the characters. I especially loved the scene in, I think episode 6 or 7, when Kaname realizes she's without Sousuke to protect her for the first time and feels alone in her apartment. The director nailed the feeling of isolation and underlying tension really well.
Also, I think it goes without saying, but the animation is excellent, some of Kyoto's best work.

I was pretty shocked when I watched this because I think the original FMP is a good series, but not great. Then somehow when they decided to separate out the comedy into Fumoffu and then the straight drama into TSR they came up with one of the best comedy animes and one of the best drama animes I've watched.

FMP is amazing. You can really feel the emotion coming from these characters who are so easy to become attached to. When they're sad, your heart hurts. When they're happy, you want to laugh too. It's still one of my favorite anime series. Most of the shows I've seen with Mecha are so caught up in the politics and nitty gritty of it that I get lost with the infomation. This show feels different and unexpected. You want Chidori and Sousuke to be together, and you want to keep watching to see what could possibly happen next.
I love this show.

Well said...one moment that really hits home is when Sousuke learns about his reassignment. It was crushing to see him literally break down at the end of that episode.

I know and all it just took was One split second for his fist to crush the computer screen. One of the most memorable scenes of the franchise and one of the most soul crushing in some way. The same applies for Tessa breaking down in front of Sousuke. I wish I can remember the context of the scene, but I'm still split on either sympathizing with her or kindof hating her guts.

It's hard to believe the same people that made Lucky Star, Haruhi, and Clannad animated this. Kyoani's worth every dollar.
That said, Chidori's one of the few non-comedy hot-heads I care for.
I cared for the twins in the end. They really know how to make bastards.

It's a shame the franchise is split between two different companies. If ever a series could do well on TV (besides season 1 on niche Anime Network) it's this one.
