The marathon will run 8 a.m. Friday to 8 a.m. Saturday.
Characters to be featured include an all-star line-up: Bugs Bunny, Elmer Fudd, Porky Pig, Daffy Duck, Sylvester & Tweetie, Tom and Jerry, Pepe LePew, Roadrunner and Wile E. Coyote, and many others.
Also included in this Tribute to Chuck Jones will be a block of his more "artistic" cartoons, including the Academy Award-winning The Dot and the Line (1965) and For Scent-imental Reasons (1949). Additionally, the tribute will feature such Oscar-nominated shorts as From A to Z-Z-Z-Z-Z (1953), High Note (1960), Nelly's Folley (1961) and Now Hear This (1962). Afterward, we'll feature the Tom & Jerry shorts that Chuck Jones directed, and the MGM short The Bear That Wasn't (1967).

Aw, I was just about to post that... Oh well...
I think it's great that Chuck is getting the respect he deserves, and he deserves this long of a marathon. Too bad I won't be able to tape it, although I already have all of the Chuck Jones cartoons in their uncut format... Seriously... :D :)... well okay, maybe there's a few I can't seem to find...... but I can honestly say that I've seen every Chuck Jones cartoon, and there isn't one I really can honestly say I hate.

I really like the picture they sent along with the press release. It would make a great background some day.
And I'll be sure to toon in to the marathon as well!

Hi I haven't posted over here before, but I saw this in the news section and I had to cry out. I was lucky to see Now Hear This once and only once when I was a kid, and it simply blew me away. Now I find a time when I know it's gonna be on, and my cable company doesn't offer Boomerang. Ugh, things just get worse.

While it's nice that they are devoting that time to salute Jones, I can't help but think that the programming people at the network decided "Hey, we can't pre-empt all those showings of Toonami and Cartoon-Cartoons; We've got to promote them for cross-marketing purposes as much as possible. Let's stick it on Boomerang -- all those shows are old anyway, so we're not going to lose and sales on Scooby Doo (got the movie coming up, you know) or Powerpuff Girls merchandise if we don't show Loopy DeLoop for one day."

Our cable system doesn't carry Boomerang even on their digital package. As much I'd like to see super-rare Chuck Jones shorts such as Joe Glow the Firefly, Porky's Ant, and Porky's Midnight Matinee, I hope this marathon isn't where they air because I wouldn't get to see or tape them.

I get the feeling that it's on Boomerang partly due to a desire to prevent interruption of Cartoon Cartoons, and partly because it's a clever scheme to increase demand for Boomerang.
Unfortunately, I don't get the network, but I think it would be interesting if they ran some rarities. I don't wish anything against the Boomerang viewers just because I won't be able to see any unPC stuff.

Personally, I think that the tribute idea is great, but why BOOMERANG? Not many people have that channel on their cable systems, me included. God forbid CN interrupts their 'Cartoon Cartoon' garbage...!!

I will be taping this marathon. If anyone feels they really want a copy of it, please feel free to e-mail me and we might can work something out. Be forewarned though, that Boomerang doesn't do a better job than CN with airing rare or uncut Looney Tunes. They will most likely play the same ones that CN airs with all the same edits. Also, Boomerang usually plays 8 hours of toons, and then repeats them twice in one day. Doesn't matter to me though. I love 'em just the same. Chuck Jones deserves this tribute.

It's really a very good idea... 24 hours just Chuck Jones cartoons enter Bugs & Daffy (thursday repeat) and on time for Looney Tunes Show saturday. :)

Cartoon King, you may be hearing from me, depending on what airs, I'm primarily concernede with the more abstract shorts, like Dot & Line, High Note, and especially Now Hear This.

Yeah, with one exception: All Chuck Jones characters except for the glaring inclusion of TAZ...since when did Chuck Jones create or direct HIM? Taz has only been in one Jones cartoon that I can think of, "Superior Duck", and even then only a cameo.

Also note that Sylvester and Tweety were mentioned among Jones' characters in the press release. Sure, there were the three Porky/Sylvester cartoons, Sylvester in "The Scarlet Pumpernickel", and Tweety's cameo in "No Barking"... but that's about it...

Do we really need cartoon cartoons and anime? No! Why did they have to choose boomerang? That channel has fewer subscribers! I consider this another insult to the Chuck Jones cartoons.

Hi, I'm new to this board and I have to say I was devestated when I heard the news of Chuck Jones' death. I think the 24 hour marathon is a good idea. I feel like I've grown up with that man. He seems to have touched the lives of so many people. I always crack up at Daffy's line about the disintigrating pistol in "Duck Dodgers in the 24 1/2 Century." And who can forget that sad look on Marc Anthony's face when he thinks that Pussyfoot has been baked into the cookie batter. I think that's the way we all feel right now. Chuck Jones was a really great man. May he rest in piece.

Here is the real reason why Cartoon Network will not air the Chuck Jones weekend marathon but instead air on Boomerang.
1."Craptoon Craptoons"
2.God awful Anime
3. Countless all day airings of "Scooby Doo" crap
4.CN Theatre: Can not bump a "Scooby Doo" movie that is scheduled to air this saturday night at 7pm
I too have digital cable (which is also owned by AOL/Time Warner) which doesn't carry Boomerang on my cable system.Another Cartoon Network blunder.....

Mattashell, consider yourself lucky with even one view of "Now Hear This." I first read about this cartoon 25 years ago and I still haven't seen it! I sat through every Daffy/Speedy short (plus a few gems like "Nelly's Folly," which kept me hoping) in the first Merrie Melodies package, only to find out years later that 'NHT' was never included. :(

Besides the incredible insensitivity (and outright stupidity) of dumping the Chuck Jones tribute onto a channel which will be seen by only one out of all of us board regulars (likely representative of how few people will see it though) this tribute bodes to make ANOTHER fowl folly... Namely excluding Chuck's other work (besides the great SNAFU WWII shorts). His co-written UPA-Warners feature "Gay Purr-ee", his co-directed MGM feature "The Phantom Tollbooth", his independently produced series of Kipling's 'Jungle Book' stories ("Rikki Tiki Tavi", "The White Seal", and "Mowgli's Brothers", and his three "Cricket..." specials. (These six specials proved to Warners that he was still alive 25 years ago). To that list we could add "Carnival Of The Animals" and small samplings of his "Bugs Bunny Show" work and even glimpses of his "Curiosity Shop" stuff. Then there's the Coyote and Roadrunner promos he made for the U.S. Dept. Of The Interior, and an array of extremely fine "Electric Company" Coyote & Roadrunnner appearances...
I've always hoped to urge Chuck and family to push to arrange rights for a theatrical release of a compiled version of his three Kipling "Jungle Book" stories. They remain quite faithful to Kipling, and are lovely pieces.
P.S. Tony, "Now Hear This" has been shown, sorry you've missed it before.

Have we ever done a cyber-hand count of everyone here who has Boomerang? I've had it since its inception, and I would have thought it would be more readily available now.
And BTW, "Now Hear This" is the bonus cartoon on the "Crash! Bang! Boom!" DVD Audio, in case you have a DVD player, Tony.

Do you have a satellite system? DirecTV and Dish Network both carried Boomerang since its inception, which is why Jon (DirecTV) and I (Dish Network) have it.

*Sigh*. Well, at least there will be a marathon. But this is exactly the sort of thing that should be on the Cartoon Network. Chuck's passing was a major media event. Local and national TV news programs were filled with the news.....almost every media outlet I saw had something about it (even it was "Space Jam" clips :D )......PBS re-ran an eight-year old interview with Jones......the list goes on and on. Like it or not, to many in the mainstream media, Chuck Jones *was* WB animation. (I sure don't remember this happening when Freleng passed a few years back.)
And here we have Cartoon Network, a channel supposedly devoted to animation (and a channel that becomes more mainstream every year). They should be the one airing the 24-hour marathon, not a sister channel hardly anyone sees. The CN of a few years ago would have done that. Remember when they did that April Fools Day marathon where they just showed the same Screwy Squirrel cartoon for 12 hours straight? They wouldn't even think about doing a stunt like that now.
But a 24-hour Jones marathon shouldn't even be viewed as a stunt. It should be viewed as an homage. Jones probably made many of those people behind those "Cartoon Cartoons" want to go into animation. You'd think that on a channel devoted to animation, seeing a 24-hr (or even 12-hr) marathon of cartoons from the man who meant so much to animation would be no problem. But apparently the AOL Time Warner entity that is CN is too set in its ways to do even that....

Yes, I have Dish Network. So, I guess the question now is, has ANY normal cable providers picked it up yet? I thought WB was aiming for that after a while.
And to Jon...
I don't know if you're familiar with the format or not, but DVD Audio is a new audio/video format that is being sort of tested out on a few music releases. I believe the goal of the format is to bring the sound quality (such as 5.1 surround sound, etc.) and extras of the DVD format to the normal audio CD format.
Discs can only be played on DVD Players (and they make a special DVD Audio-only player, as well). My local Best Buy has the few discs produced for about 25-30 bucks a pop.
Warner Bros. seems to be the pioneer in this format (big surprise, huh?). I have seen some of the bigger Madonna, Eric Clapton, Barenaked Ladies, and Alice Cooper releases in the format, among others.
The "Crash! Bang! Boom!" DVD Audio has the same audio content as the CD (I don't know what tinkering was done to it since I didn't buy the original CD). BUT, it also has visual DVD menus, a lobby card gallery(!), bios on Carl Stalling and Treg Brown, a short audio interview with Treg(!), and perhaps best of all, the complete "Now Hear This" cartoon to watch.
Don't feel bad if you haven't heard of this yet. I found it by accident. Warner Bros. has (as far as I can tell) been doing zero consumer promotion for the format. I mentioned the DVD Audio to Mr. Beck...he wasn't even told it was out yet, and he worked on the extras!
Whether or not it's worth thirty bucks is a matter of opinion. I think we would all prefer full-blown DVD releases of the cartoons, but it's great if you need a quick fix.

Thanks for the info, Greg. Is this DVD Audio available in the USA? If so, where could I buy/order a copy? I don't see a listing at Amazon, so I assume this is a non-US release (like those Japanese Tweety DVDs).

I've seen the DVD Audio around, including a movie/CD/DVD store around here. It's $32.99 there, and for one cartoon, it's not worth the price.

It's a U.S. release. I found it at Best Buy in the DVD section, so I would assume stores like that (Circuit City, Media Play, what have you) would be your best bet.
So far, I haven't seen any sites sell any of these yet, so maybe they're still in the test marketing stage.
If you have trouble finding it around you, I'll check the store I got mine at and see if they have more.
