John Delaney's Sketch of the Week #9

Welcome to "John Delaney's Sketch of the Week"!

Out of the kindness of his art, John Delaney is doing something big for the fans - an exclusive weekly sketch for the fans who frequent Toon Zone!

Every week, he will draw a new picture based on the results of the poll. That means that *we* fans choose what the image will be!

The contest will begin every Monday, and end at 5pm the following Friday, giving fans a solid five days to choose. You can only vote ONCE! John will then draw the sketch over the weekend and we'll present at the beginning of the following week. The characters must be animation/comic characters drawn in the Animated style, and if you have any requests for future polls, send me an email with your ideas! Keep an eye out on the Comics Forum for all the latest action!

I'm sure The Spirit is up there because John recently mentioned that he would love to sketch him, and we all know what happened the last time John mentioned he wanted to sketch a particular character. That said I voted Supergirl! :p Go KARA!

Well, you've got an S theme going, so you could cut Bizzarro, and then you'd have all S's to pick from...or you could CHOOSE Bizaro, and dump the S's...

Which seems to be the case, esp since Bizarro wears a backwards S! Geez, I've never had this much trouble deciding a poll - usually there are two characters that I'm stuck between, this time it's half the poll!

I'd really like to see the Spirit win, but an action Space Ghost piece has been sorely missed for a long time, Spawn in the DC animated form would be insane, as would Samurai Jack and Bizarro would just look plain kewl.

The crowd of characters sure does change every week, doesn't it? This one will be interesting. But I ask.

Where's all the Futurama fans? Probably too lazy to vote, in true Fry fashion. I wouldn't have it any other way. But I've always thought it was silly when someone waited till a character had no chance, then voted for them. So where does the Fry vote go now? You guys think Bizarro has a shot? I like my characters crazed and full of beans.

At least I got a sticky at the CCF board, so they can vote for Samurai Jack which is my second choice.

WoW! Great choices this week! I even had a tough time choosing. If Fry doesn't win you can always pick up the latest issue of Futurama (#7). I drew that one and there's tons'O' Fry in it, including a cool flashback to the night he fell into the deep freeze.
Futurama # 7 avaliable at all fine comic shops right now.
Did I mention I'm also working on part of #9 and all of #10?
Now as for me I would've hands down voted for The Spirit (Huge Eisner fan) if only Spaceghost wasn't there (huger Alex Toth fan) had to with the Ghost!

John That's the reason I submitted Fry to Harley; you'd mentioned you did some Futurama work for Bongo Comics. I just wish I had a nearby comic book store where I could check out these issues.

I've been wondering about Space Ghost. I only knew of his talk show incarnation before recently becoming aware that he used to be an actual character. And it seems he influenced the general rules on superhero design. Can anyone tell me more about this character, and how he differed from his current desk-based counterpart?

Anyway, Space Ghost was a Hanna Barabera superhero similer to Birdman, and Blue Falcoln (IIRC)
He was teamed up with a Brother Sister duo, and a monkey, and all of them could turn invisible, and they fought bad guys, who included Moltar, Zorak, and Brak. pretty much anyone you see on Space Ghost aside from a celebrity wa a former Space Ghost villian...

Johnny knoxville has the role of a 2 headed alien. Tony Shalhoub returns as Jeebs. Michael jackson is in the film and NOT as an alien. that cameo has me afraid and hes doing the song for MIB 2 as well UGH!! SO UNFAIR!!


Frank the pug returns as well as the worm aliens who unfortunately, save the day in the end. . They were mistakes to begin with (literally--- they were left on the shelf when MIB 1 was made and randomly made it in as puppets and then CG characters and now theyre the stars? yeah...)


MIB the series will come back to TV Fall 2002 and will reflect the film. This sucks because this may mean no Elle. ARG!

They hurt me so much! Elle and Zed are like my favs and this is a DAGGER IN MY HEART! Zed will of course be back but Elle--- man--- shes MY cartoon hero! I root for that chick and she always pulls through and saves the day!

It's ok that you were talking about the movie, we do have these boards so people can have discussions with each other, and we've had problems with spoilers in the past. The mods are working on setting up some official rules on the subject so until then we have to go by common sense and mistakes happen now and then. There's always next time for Spawn. There's a great 'animated' style pic of him on the cover of TOONS, a magazine released by WIZARD about 5 years ago.

I'm also surprised with how high the turn out is for this poll. This may end up being the best poll, in terms of participation, yet. We may end up with 170 votes by the 5pm Friday deadline.

There are some good characters in this poll, but Space Ghost deserves the superhero sketch treatment more than any of them. We need to see him fighting crime once again, and I really want to see what John does to add that new animated look to him. Since we're cutting back on repeating characters to add variety I'd hate to think I would have to wait weeks before getting an opportunity like this again.

Course the Fallen DA of Gotham is more a fave for me (hence the Avie), which often leaves me of two minds on any given subject. (I've got an especially soft spot for evil sexy tragic bad guys) Right now I'm also kinda cracked out on Big Guy and Rusty, but so far I love all of John's stuff. Can't wait to see the winner, even if it is supergirl.

I think I'd much prefer to see Kara finally win a poll on her own . Don't get me wrong - Delaney's work is awesome - but I just feel like a character as great as Kara could win without the sympathy vote.

Not to put words in your mouth, but do you mean that posters shouldn't directly ask John "Can you draw <X> for me", but instead should submit requests to Harley via email for inclusion in upcoming polls? Just need a bit of clarification is all. :)

And to editorialize a bit - Hellboy does, indeed, RAWK. It's a fantastic Lovecraftian horror-adventure comic written and drawn by Mike Mignola and is published by Dark Horse.

[shameless plug] Mr. Mignola also contributed a stellar pinup for issue #25 of the Powerpuff Girls comic, which features illos by five other industry luminaries as well (Kyle Baker, John Byrne, Jaime Hernandez, Mike Allred & Adam Warren).

Yeah, sounds like you got it figured out. The reason we started the poll was so that poor John wouldn't have people asking him to draw so many characters, but you should always feel free to submit requests to Harley.

No biggie! I think we're just trying to keep it in the comics/ animation vein, Jim's right though, the way to get your request posted is to do it through Harley. I don't check the posts everyday so sometimes personal requests can accidentally get overlooked if they're not put though the proper channels.
Any suggestion is welcome but let's try to keep it in the Toon zone :D
