I was just wondering if anybody else is reading this crossover. I have to say it's been an interesting read so far.
For anyone who doesnt know this crossover focuses on Superman trying to stop Imperilex a being so powerful he consumes worlds .. and Earth is next on the menu. He is so feared that villians like Brainiac 13 & Darkseid assist Earth in stopping him. But thats not the only problem Superman has as he must also face off against General Zod who has made his move threating the Man of Steel and contend with President Luthor's agenda, which in a future issue is to release Doomsday (the being who years ago killed Superman ) to help in the war effort. The series promises the deaths of a lot of characters including ones very close to Superman and to change the lives of a host of Dc characters.

What I find astonising is... everyone who's told me about the Worlds at War crossover seems to care a lot more about the possibility of deaths than the storyline itself.
It's like: "hey, read it, it has lots of blood and pain in it!!!"
That's strange... is death the only thing that interests comic book fans?? How could death become an enticing thing?!

Why the possible deaths seem...interesting...is becuase some big name characters may be getting bumped up. The main front runners are Aquman and Martian Manhunter, who both had their titles cancelled recently. The changes in Superman we've seen in the Sept. soliciations with the new costume, but as for the rest of the DCU....

but anyway, i like it so far, i particularly like seeing all the evil bad guys getting all shook up, its always interesting to see that kind of thing. peace.
oh ya, one more thing, are we going to see any bat villians? anyone know? joker hopefully.

It's not death, per say, that everyone is concerned about. Think about it. Many of these DC hero icons have been around before many of us here were even born yet. Meaning you have a large fan base. Killing off a character means ending a hero's career. Popular superheroes aren't going to die a simple death. Meaning, you'd most likely be reading a spectacular storyline. Not your run-of-the-mill story, but an elaborate one where it effects everyone.
Think of it this way too. Death opens doors for new superheroes and new villains as well. I'm sure no one's reading OWAW just because the word "Death of...." is labeled on it. I hear this storyline is going to change many things in the DCU, much the same way NML did for Batman. I'm going to continue reading this story. Right now, Prelude to War, seems to be the calm before the storm. I can't wait to see what happens next.

Yes but what I'm sad about is... death is now a means of "bribing" readers into buying more books. It's become a common advertising tool and in that respect, I find it worrisome. Months before the end of the NML era, everyone seemed to care a lot about who would probably eventually die, and thus at the expense of the tremendous storyline.
I know death is fruitful in comics, it offers new prospects and all, but storylines can be "spectacular" without it. Or only once in a while, not every year.
Ah well, just my POV.

Well Salvor, that is an interesting point. I see it as this. When being a superhero, aren't you always putting your life on the line? A superhero could die at anytime. But because they're superheroes, they make spectacular feats to avoid death at all costs, using all of their resources. Knowing this, it would take a lot to kill a superhero.
Also, have there been many deaths in the DCU lately? I read mainly Batman related titles, so I don't know much about the rest of them. (Green Arrow actually came back from death, or that's what we're trying to figure out)
I don't think death is DC's way of bribing readers. There was that whole title "In this issue, Batman DIES" buzz, but how often does that happen? Maybe that was a bribe? But hey, they were awesome stories, they didn't come short by just putting that title to attract readers and there was actually substance there. When it comes to killing off a character, I think it's a way of refreshing their storylines, and making way for new development.

Actually, it's been pretty quiet around the DCUniverse of late. No one has died in quite sometime as far as I know. It's been a quiet year, i guess. :) But this crossover is gonna mean some changes for DCU and Superman Has anyone seen his "new" costume, which will result becuase of OWAW? While the change is slight, it's still pretty cool. Here it is below:

I am really sick of them using the death of characters as ways of getting new readers. Like someone said earlier, if they kill off a main character (ie-Aquaman or Martian Manhunter) it is like killing off icons. They usually do it to make new versions of the same character (ie-Supergirl, Green Lantern, Flash, etc). But, I don't like it. If they want to kill of some heroes, I can give some suggestions.

There are alot fo 2nd tier charatcers that DC could get rid off, and they likely will dump a few this summer. I'm actually looking forward to Aquaman or MM getting knocked off. There's ben no real character development in them for a long time, and if they're not growing, then why keep 'im around?
