View Full Version : Which Game Console?
I finally have enough money for one of those new game consoles :D ! I was thinking of PS2 or Gamecube. Also the XBox look great. There are many good games for the Cube, PS2, and XBox. I want to know what you guys think is best.

DREAMCAST. LONG LIVE SEGA.
If not my great dc, then probably the PS2.

I have a PS2, and I'm loving it! Although, some of the games do get tiresome...
Right now, the Game Cube is the 'crap-console' IMO. There are no games on it I want, & it's just not all that appealing, in the long run. Now Sega is going to be pumping it full of re-used games I already own on the DC. No need for a GC.
When the price goes down, I'm going to get an XBox. Thats my decision for today. Why? Well, the system may be really big(as are those frickin' big controllers!!), BUT, smart little Bill Gates got a ton of exclusive licenses that I REALLY want. I've been a long time 'Jet Set Radio'(err...Jet GRIND Radio), and Dead Or Alive fan. Both of which, their latest 'sequals' are out, exclusively on the XBox. And I REALLY want those two games. But, I'm not going to get it just for those two..there are a lot of other games that look very cool. But, I'm still going to wait till...maybe this summer? I'm sure the $$ will drop down abit. I have patience.

Well, my brother owns GameCube and X-BOX....
I hate X-BOX. The controller is unconfortable, and the games don't appeal to me (though I am going to get a Star Wars game for it [Starfighter..since I don't have a PC or PS2]). I thought the game "BloodWake" looked great. I was gonna buy it and everything...but..I played a demo of it....and it's boring...
But, it could just me powerful hate for X-BOX..lol.
I personally like the Cube better anyway...just because it has more games I wanna play. Remember: the GAMES have to be the deciding factor in your purchase. Not the power of the system, not the life of the system...the GAMES. Somthing you know you'll be happy with..

With your list I would suggest the Gamecube, possibly the PS2. The Mario, Zelda, and Resident Evil series will be on Gamecube, but the Gran Turismo series is strictly PlayStation. Grand Theft Auto might make it on to Gamecube, and I'm not really sure about the fighting games, though I would say they should all end up on PS2 at some point. Though I'm a PlayStation fan, I would have to suggest Gamecube for you, just because it seems to have most of the exclusive titles you like, and a lot of third party games end up going multiplatform anyway. Hope this helped.

GameCube= Super Smash Bros. Melee, Star Wars: Rouge Leader
X-Box= HALO!!!!!!!!!! You don't need another reason.
PS2=Metal Gear Solid 2, Grand Theft Auto 3, Devil May Cry, Gran Turismo 3, Maximo (old-school glory).
My advice? PS2. More games, better games, and the ability to play old PS1 games makes it my overall choice.
But that's just my opinion.

GTA 3 is so amazing it deserves its own system. That game, and Metal Gear Solid 2 being exclusive to PS2 make that the system to buy in my view. There are too few games that are exclusive to other systems to go the other way (Star Wars: Rouge Squardon 2 and Halo come to mind) but they aren't that good.
In my eyes, go with the PS2- it has the most and the best games.

If you want games NOW then it would be either the PS2 or DC the DC library of games it not gona get much bigger. Now Game Cube is cheap so it is a good buy but you are gona have to have faith that games are comming for it
I am indiffernt about the PS2 I see it really as PS 1 and a 1/2 it has bottle necks and not really a clean design (kinda like the Saturn just not as bad) but it has good support from devlopers
X-Box well being a Mac and Amiga user I wouldn't touch M$ with a 10 foot pole plus I have a bad feeling that the X-Box is gona be polluted with even more half ass games then the PSX had.

GBA! & an SNES, and you've got it made. the SNES is my favorite console of all time. It had a ton of great games, and it's controller was confortable, and functional. So it doesn't play DVDs, a DVD player's only 100, which you'll more than save if you buy a used SNES over a PS2, or even a GC.
GBA....oh, I gotta get me one of those...

As The Dark Knight said, from your list, it sounds like the Cube or PS2 would be your best bet.
Personally, I went with the PS2 for a number of reasons. First of all, its a multi-media machine - you can not only play PS2 games, but also PS1 games, CDs, and DVDs. The Cube can't play DVDs, which was a big factor for me. And since the PS2 can play the PS games, the PS2 has the largest library of games of any system available. But, as has been stated, you've got to make sure that the games in that library appeal to you.
Don't be convinced to buy a system just for their "exclusives" either. Very few of the franchises are truely "exclusive". True, you're not going to see FF on the other consoles anytime soon, and you're probably not going to find Zelda on the PS at any point. But a lot of the other "exclusives" are only limited time exclusives. Right now, Resident Evil has become a Cube exclusive, but only for a few years. After that, the latest in the series will most likely find its way onto the other consoles. And this is happening more and more with "exclusives".
So, figure out what you want from your system first - just games, or the ability to do other things like play DVDs as well. Then take a look at the games currently available, and what's coming out in the near future. And from there, you should be able to make a good decision.

I was going to have to say a Game Cube but with Zelda being pushed back and not that many games on the market I would have to say a PS2. Sad part is the main reason I want it is because of Batman: Vengence. I was going to get it on GC but then I realized it didn't have all of the animated sequences on it and was therefore not worth my time. Someday I plan on picking up either a GC or PS2 but that'll probably be around the time Zelda is released.

Well, I own a Gamecube, and I've never regretted it. I'm also a longtime Nintendo fan, so I'm not bothered by delays. If anything, they've taught me to be patient for a game that will be that much more polished when it DOES come out. I'm not really interested in what PS has to offer, and X-Box... well... I already own two computers. I don't need a third.

Hmm...perhaps I'll have to re-think this if this is the case. One of my friends had told me that in order to get it to fit Nintendo had cut out some of the animated sequences in order to get the game to fit. If it does have everything the PS2 does then GC all the way.

Actually, the gamecube version of Batman Vengeance (this is what I heard anyway) has more cutscenes than the PS2 one by a small amount. The gamecube and X-Box versions have these extra cutscenes that the PS2 one doesn't- but they're only minor from what I hear.

Yeah, get a Dreamcast. :P
Actually, it and the games afre pretty cheap right now, and the games themselves still have good quality and playability.
But, take my thing wth a grain of salt, since I'm just a Sega fanboy on a now-defunct system. -_-
As for games I like:
1. Sonic
2. Street Fighter
3. Anything with a GOOD plot.
As you can see, these all are now by companies that are spreading out on all consoles, so I really can't help you. All systems have good and bad points.

I'm one of the rare people out there who keeps the older systems and waits many years before getting a new one.
I still have my NES (I used to have a SNES and a Gameboy but a fire took them out in October 2000) and SMB and Ninja Gaiden are still great games to this day.
I have a PS1 and instead of buying a PS2, I'll use the money to buy one of those LCD screens for car trips OR I'll get a SNES, GBA, or N64 (I'm not a Sega fan, all those years of making fun of Nintendo turned me off to them).
As far as Xbox, I hear they are heavy, plus that controller is worse than the Genesis one (buttons and bulk). And with a cost of $300+ to play DVD's?? That's crazy.
QQ: Why are people dissing the GameCube? So what if it doesn't have a DVD player, it's a GAMEcube.

If you can only own one video game console, then there's only one choice: the PS2.
First, the PS2 plays original PS1 games! There's an instant 500 game video library (on a budget!) to choose from right there.
Second, the PS2 plays DVDs.
Third, the PS2 plays PS2 games. (Duh.)
Fourth, the PS2 plays audio CDs. (An option very few people use, but it's nice to know it can play audio CDs if you ever decide to use the PS2 as a CD player.)
As for the games, none of the current systems on the market can touch the PS2! Here's a brief list of some games that are worth owning on the PS2 (PS1 games are included on this list due to the backward compatability):
-Final Fantasies IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X (These seven games alone makes the PS2 worth every penny!)
-Chrono Trigger, Chorno Cross
-Parasite Eve, Parasite Eve 2
-Final Fantasy Tactics, Front Mission 3
-Vagrant Story, Xenogears
-Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2
-Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Castlevania: Chronicles
-Silent Hill, Silent Hill 2
-all the EA Sports games you could ever want to play
-all the Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, and Tekken games you could ever want to play
-the Gran Turismo series
-the Grand Theft Auto series
-the Crash Bandicoot series
-the Tomb Raider series
-the Twisted Metal series
Whew! ... and I'm just warming up! This list could easily go on for another one hundred items. I know I've missed several good games already that should be on my abridged list...
Keep in mind that Sony has almost every 3rd party company in existence making games for the PS2, including Sega. Oh, and for you Final Fantasy fans (like myself :D), Final Fantasies XI and XII are also going to be on the PS2, as well as the next Chrono Trigger/Chrono Cross game, if it gets made. :D
Bottom line... PS2! PS2! PS2!
As for the classic video game consoles... I still own a fully decked out NES and Super NES, with all the best games each had to offer. I have 32 NES games, and 21 Super NES games. :)
So this is what I think you should buy:
Retired
----------
-NES
-Super NES
Current

-PS2

Mainly because it's not the TRENDY console. PS2 and X-Crate have built up a bunch of hype that they're the "cool" consoles to play. Add to that the fact that the clueless have called it "kiddie" and "the purple lunchbox/purse" and you have plenty o' confusion to go around.
What they don't realise is that Nintendo means quality and innovation, and it always has. Remember Gamecube's 1T-SRAM? Well, guess what's going into Sony's next console...
Anyway, "kiddie" is crap. The Big N doesn't make games just for kids, it makes games for everyone. The unwashed masses are just too shallow to see it.
One last thing. Would you pay an extra hundred dollars to play DVD on your 'Cube? I wouldn't. I already have a quality DVD player.

I'm assuming that you don't have every Mortal Kombat and Final Fantasy game because Mortal Kombat Trilogy and Final Fantasy Tactics (might be another FF game) DO NOT work on the PS2.
Also, can someone explain to me why people love this Final Fantasy stuff? Yes, Final Fantasy 10 and some of the others look good, but how is it entertaining to play? I'd rather fight live, instead of watching a video after selecting the word FIGHT. And the fact that you just stand there while the enemy hits you?? BORING.

Some people "get" role-playing games, and some don't.
Its very entertaining to play. I play for the story. To me, most fighting games out there are very monotonous, and get boring really quick. Button mashing just doesn't make a game entertaining to me. With games like FF, you've got an entire story behind the gameplay that keps you going. And, for me, there's more strategy involved in an rpg fight than there is in a fighting game - you've got a number of different options to choose from (weapons, moves, magic, items) rather than that standard combo of buttons. You have to figure out which ones work, adn which ones don't for each enemy and situation. Thus, there's a lot more planning you have to put into it. This keeps me much more entertained.
But to each his own. You prefer the fast, knee-jerk reaction type of fighting, I prefer the slow, thought out strategic kind. There are a lot of different types of gamers out there, and thus the different systems - each one panders to a different demographic.
Resident Evil is coming to the Gamecube? I never would have guessed..... :)

I do think that ALL THREE active video game consoles on the market will do very well, and all three will be around for many years to come. :D Which is great! Especially if you love video games! I didn't mean to imply that the XBox and Gamecube are horrible. All three systems are well built and have a lot of potential, but the PS2 (due to the reasons mentioned in my last post) has a huge head start.
But, if you can only afford ONE video game console, and you want to buy an active console, then the PS2 is the way to go. I would own a PS2 OR an XBox AND a Gamecube eventually (I have a PS2, but I'd like to get a Gamecube too whenever I earn the money) but I don't see a reason to own a PS2 AND an XBox.
I like the fact that the Gamecube and Game Boy Advance are going to become symbiotic systems. That will be Gamecube's best selling point, besides, of course, Nintendo's many franchises (Mario, Donkey Kong, Zelda, Metroid, Star Fox, F-Zero, Pokemon, Earthbound). However, due to this symbiotic relationship, I tend to think of the Game Boy Advance as a part of the Gamecube system, and not its own independent system.
Personally, I think that Squaresoft, Konami, Capcom, Nintendo, and Sega are the best video game makers in the market. Sony owns 25% of Squaresoft's stock, so it's safe to say that Sony has Squaresoft in its pocket. (A lot of people think that Squaresoft makes THE best games in the video game market, and I'm inclined to agree with them!) Nintendo has its Nintendo games, of course. And Konami, Capcom, and Sega will be making video games for all three systems. Keep in mind that Squaresoft own EA Sports as well. :)
In any case, it's a free country (God bless the USA! :D), so you can buy whatever system you wish. I'm just offering my economic analysis. :) Good day!

I agree w/ you Squall...the PS2's ability to play old PSX games and the new ones is great (but is supposedly heck for game-makers).
The GCN and X-BOX are just like the PS2 was when it was released. Very few great games out at launch.
But from as it looks..GCN "Fanboys" are praising games like SSB:M, Pikmin, Rogue Leader...and on occasion, Luigi's Mansion. But the only title X-BOX "Fanboys" have to brag about? Halo. Which is quickly loosing it's appeal. Some brag about DOA3...which there isn't much too brag about. But the PS2...that's a different story..
The more I view this thread, the more enticing a PS2 is looking...mainly because I can hardly stand the X-BOX (Circus Maximus came out yesterday, and my brother bought it. It's a decent game [which I enjoy], but the graphics are N64 par..)...

I say run with the GC or PS2. X-Box has A LOT of impressive LOOKING games that have like the worst Fun Factor and game Play Imaginable. They also pull crap like pulling quotes from their own Official Magazine to hype their games... Which can tell you only one thing.
Besides if you get a PS2 you'll be getting all the games worth getting on X-Box. And then if you get a GC you'll be getting the most fun games and not to mention innovative. Right now I'd get a PS2 and then save up for a GC once Eternal Darkness, PS0, Resident Evil Revamp and Dark Summit hit....
I have a GC now and i have Tons of fun games But the games I REALLY want will be here by mid March.

#2: I don't need to read anything - I own Final Fantasy Anthology (as I said, I own all the FF games that have been released to the systems) - and it works fine! I've never had any problem with it playing on my PS2. Neither has my friend who also owns a copy.

Ok then. I'm glad that's cleared up.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't it only 19%? I'm pretty sure Square can do whatever they want but it's their choice to stick with Sony, however, the stock purchase didn't exactly hurt their relationship.

I really have to disagree with you on that point. They may make the best RPGs, but just look at The Bouncer, All Star Pro-Wrestling, and Driving Emotion Type-S. These are hardly the best in their respective genres.
I have to wait for the PS2 to finally lower it's price, probably around E3, before I can even consider getting one. I can't believe I've gone this long without playing MGS2, GTA3, etc.

but, if you want a new system i have got dc andits my fav., but of ps2 x box and cube. i have played all but cube. i would say ps2 is my favorite. the only thing about x box is the fact it has halo and ps2 does not. but that is the only x box game i have liked.

I, myself have always been a Nintendo fan, so I automatically would say GameCube...Super Smash Bros. Melee is great (plus, Starfox & Zelda are coming out soon). But, that's just me...

Like I've always said:
The PS2 rode the momentum of the PSOne's phenomenal success, and now everyone wants to develop for it. At least for the near future, this machine will get much more games than the other two combined.
But that's not to count out the Gamecube... actually, I'd have to say that Nintendo is tops when it comes to making games overall... gripes about style aside I can't even remember the last time they released a first-party game that was less than good! Though while I'm sure it'll get more games than the N64 did, it'll be hard-pressed to catch up to the PS2's flow of software.
Xbox... pfeh. Aside from Halo, Microsquash wouldn't know a good game if it bit them (and I know, I've played many of their lame excuses for first-party games). Besides, Bill Gates doesn't need your money.

Well, Gates still doesn't need your money. I do! :p
Now if I can just develop a game system as good as the GameCube. :wakko:

Feh... It's just like DOA2 with new characters, why do you think that PS2 and GC have DOA2 haven't even been looking at this game as any type of threat.
I've played DOA 3 and I didn't see anything all the different from 3 Game Play wise. It was fun but it's no reason to look at it as a game that sets it apart from GC or PS2. Because DOA 2 is just as good, if not better. DOA 3 should have just been Called DOA 2 Turbo or Championship Edition.
Well I like it :p. I play it all the time at my friends house.
