Some interesting arguments and reflections (http://www.andrewsullivan.com/main_article.php?artnum=20020224) on the rise of personal web-log (blogs) -- particularly the political ones -- by Andrew Sullivan, one of the pioneers of the form.
Seems to me that a lot of what he says applies to message boards: Toon Zone is a place where the fans speak back, to praise, dissect, analyze or criticize our favorite shows, and its pretty clear the creators (if not the execs) are pretty interested to hear back from us. And it goes the other way, too. From what I've seen of the blogs, that "Flame War" site is good not only for classifying the people on ngs and mbs, but also the personality types of the various bloggers.
